WTF is happening to the server community.
Herr Robert replied to Koot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't think that would be a good idea. Many of the players would probably be deterred from investing time into getting anything better than the low tier gear, because all of their progress could be lost at the whim of a server owner deciding that he doesn't want to continue hosting anymore. -

With that attitude you are definitely not a good person to manage a server, and I'm glad that you will stop hosting it. I understand that it can be frustrating to have to wait for more than half an hour for yourself or a friend to get into a server, but by abusing your powers you can potentially ruin several hours of progress for other players. -
Randomly kicking and banning from DE5 "Kalles.."

There's a big difference between hosting a server in this and in a game like Counter Strike. In DayZ every player's progress is saved to the master server, so there needs to be restrictions on the server owners, or they will be able to use their servers to hoard weapons for themselves and their friends, which they will then be able to use on every game server. It can also be pretty devastating for a player if he's kicked at the middle of the NW Airfield or another hotspot for instance, and when he enters another server to respawn ends up having to wait for the hourglass for ~2 minutes and gets killed. That said, I don't think it would be unreasonable to let server owners have 2 reserved slots on their servers. That would reward them for paying for a server, without giving them a major advantage over the other players. I definitely agree that's poor conduct. If a server admin restarts his server' date=' he should at least give a warning a few minutes in advance so people can head to safety to save their progress. I have had this happen to myself aswell, but at least I didn't lose anything valuable. In the future I will probably avoid that server if I have good gear, though. That's not against the rules. You are allowed to use deception to kill other players. -
What to do when you have the best gear?
Herr Robert replied to pekhe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Easy. Join a nighttime server, go to the coast, kill as many players as you can before you die and then start over. -

Servers not showing Timezones causing EXTREME load times

I agree to an extent — it's a shame that there's so much random murdering. Don't get me wrong; I'm a bandit player and kill other survivors for fun and beans, but more teamwork between human players in general would make the mod more interesting for everyone. I'm not familiar with the ARMA2 engine, but perhaps it would be possible to create groups with chats to them, and everyone in the group would be able to see each other's names at close range? I think that improved communication could do a lot to improve the game.

Why does this game punich you for going OFFLINE?!
Herr Robert replied to zalman's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't think hunger and thirst is too much of a problem at the moment. So long as you can't actually die while offline I'm happy; it's not that hard to make it a habit to always keep a can of beans and a water bottle in your backpack. -
If I get into a good server, I stay on it for hours. But I want to be able to disconnect from a server and look for a better one, if it takes too long to wait for the server response or if it's lagging. The system you are proposing would punish me for looking for a stable server to play on. As good as this mod is, I would not want to potentially have to spend 1-2h waiting for disconnect bans to lift every time I'm about to start a game. Sometimes you have to go through a few servers to find one that's working well.
-
And creating an even worse problem to solve the disconnect glitch would be a brilliant idea ...
-
I think that the idea that your character stays in the server for ~10 seconds after you have logged out is good. That way you will be able to finish off dying players most of the time, and you won't see players running around corners to disconnect, since that would leave them vulnerable long enough for another player to pop them in the head. The idea that you should get banned from all servers for 15 minutes for disconnecting is outright horrible. Not only would it make it harder to play with friends, it would also discourage players from ever leaving the server they are on, potentially resulting in less active players in the server.

Do you remember your first murder or murderer?
Herr Robert replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I shot a survivor in the back at the spawning area near Elektro with my Makarov. After that I got ambushed and shot down by a recently spawned bandit. He didn't finish the job, so I managed to get up, shot him down and then finish him off with a few bullets to his head. -
Perceived usefulness of Weapons.
Herr Robert replied to Jamesbiff's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I think that it comes down to whether you are a member of a group, where you are playing on the map and what you need the weapon for. I'm playing with two other guys, and it's very useful for us to have assault rifles for when we enter cities to kill other players (at the moment we have two AKMs and one AKS-74 Kobra). If you are a friendly player who's almost only killing zombies, the Winchester is a better pick any day. -
A DMR with 3-4 clips from a bandit corpse.

Why's it take so much to kill a player?
Herr Robert replied to guitarxe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I recently killed a guy with one shot from a Lee Enfield. When I have used Winchester slugs, I have usually had to get 3-4 body shots to kill someone. Bad idea. You should always kill someone as fast as possible. He might abuse the disconnect option, thus depriving you of looting his body. That happened to me when I had nearly killed a bandit with a M16 and decided to switch to the Makarov in the middle of the execution process to avoid wasting M16 ammo. -
DayZ and Basic Human Nature
Herr Robert replied to CopperBarron's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
As a bandit player I will kill other survivors when I'm able to do so safely, even if it's just for the sport. However, I have a hard time to kill someone when I have announced that I'm friendly (to avoid getting shot) and they are nice enough to not open fire. -
How many players a server can support?
Herr Robert replied to Secr3tt's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
There's at least two American servers with 60 players. -
Yeah, it would be nice if your character remained in the server for at least ~5 seconds after you have logged out to prevent the DC abuse. I really don't think it should take any longer to be honest, as that would likely leave too much room for annoying deaths.
-
The player that killed him might have had better gear. I personally prefer the sniper rifles (for human hunting) and will not trade them away for a Winchester. The Winchester is easy to find to begin with, and primary weapons also consume alot of space, so it's not very practical to keep them in your backpack, even if you have one with 16-20 slots.

Spawn on coast glitch with existing character.
Herr Robert replied to KilltheInfected's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Yes, it seems as if the arrival of 1.5.7 messed up the spawns. Me and a teammate were supposed to spawn between Cherno and Elektro, but we spawned on the opposite sides of the map and got killed by zombies and other survivors. -
Just finished today's session after a lot of waiting due to problems with the master server. Me and one of my teammates managed to secure a hunting rifle and kill another bandit for his Winchester. Looking forward to start hunting some survivors tomorrow after work :).

It is not so much the killing itself that's the fun part' date=' although it's certainly nice. The enjoyable part is to kill someone and then look what interesting things he has in his backpack. It's also to a smaller degree to keep myself safe; since I'm a bandit, I just assume that I will get shot on sight by an unknown survivor. In what way is my playing style not serious?
-
The very reason I decided to get this game was for the player hunting and looting gear. If you just want to shoot zombies, there's better games for that. Fighting zombies is currently horrible in this mod due to their laggy movement, but even if it's fixed, there won't be much satisfaction to be had from just having to worry about AI zombies. What makes this mod so great is its athmosphere. It almost feels as if you are there. You have a huge world to traverse with items to be found and you are not restricted by the game mechanics or admins to kill other players, whether it's for the loot, to keep them at a distance for your own safety or simply for the fun of it. I understand that it's frustrating to get killed, but honestly, what would be the point if everyone stayed alive because of gameplay mechanics, and eventually got the latest gear only to be able to use it against zombies and wildlife? What keeps me motivated to find new gear is to use it against the real threat — namely other survivors and bandits, controlled by real humans. However, I do think that teamplay should be promoted. This can of course not be done entirely through the game mechanics, but I'm sure that steps can be taken to encourage teamwork. It would be more fun and challenging — for survivors and bandits alike — if players would be more likely to move in groups. That's my two cents. Great work on the mod, Rocket :)! It's a relief to see that you don't want to turn this masterpiece into a watered down MMORPG that's all about grinding.
