    Low FPS in Dayz

BF3 is very taxing but that's primarily due to DICE's inability to optimise engines or have compatibility for AMD drivers. BI's problem is that the ArmA 2 engine is less optimised than BF3's and is very very single threaded. Due to that in particular hinders it's performance a lot though it seems to love stealing as much gfx RAM as it can too, so a 2GB card helps a lot. Basically highest Ghz on CPU and as much GPU RAM as you can find = better performance. Just don't expect it to be much better on a $20,000 computer than it is on a $1000 one.

    General Weapon Poll

Definitely needs more variation (ArmA 2 has a good amount to start with) just needs to have more rarity for anything that isn't Russian. So AK's and Makarov's are common, 1911's and Revolvers etc are less so, but still relatively common and then the western guns are very rare. Reduce drop rates of the good guns and prevent duping and things would be pretty set. Have ID's assigned to weapons too, limiting numbers of spawns per server (it tracks what it's spawned not what players have). That way not too many guns of the same type float about. Also damage needs to be set based on real stats. Currently the stats are utter bollocks.

IF this was an actual game...

One time purchase (other subscription based models are phasing out due to the drain it is on players, whereas F2P is just as bad). Studio Developed with community input through Kickstarter, similar to how WMD is set up by SMS for Project C.A.R.S. Servers wise there should be the core Studio servers as well as the ability for community servers. This allows for innovation in directions the Dev's may not have even considered.
  4. They are crap and cause lag. Until they are fixed, just remove them...

    M1911 or G17?

Hmm odd I still one shot with my Revolver or M1911. G17 is still useless to me...
  6. Hmm, that's a load of crap. I'm running this: AMD Phenom II 1090T @ 3.6Ghz 8GB Corsair RAM AMD HD6950 @840/1325 ArmA 2 on a WD 1TB Caviar Black FAEX HD. If I on avg get 60FPS in the Wilderness and 45 in towns then there are more than likely optimisation issues with your setup. First off why is DayZ on a RAMDISK when you have ArmA II installed to your SSD? Is that even possible. The game is usually pretty CPU dependant but also seems to crap all over VRAM, so if you have access to a 2GB gfx card you may want to test it. The other thing is even if you have the best CPU/GPU combo in the world, this game will run like crap. It's pretty single threaded for the main part (usually using 1 or 2 main threads with 1 or 2 helper threads) and has a really bad optimisation for GPU usage. Pity really, I just imagine how good this would be in CryEngine3...
  7. Confirmed it's a bug with the dead military bodies that appear at Stary Tents and other places with these military bodies on the ground.

A serious question for the PvP-phobes

Did you really just say Killing would be fun? Well there ya go, you have expectations and then believe that it'd be fun to kill people. Gonna listen to that aren't they. Oh hang on a second, I expect you to die in game because you aren't thinking things through enough... If you die ingame (unless it's by a hacker) then you did something wrong. Pretty simple game mechanic.

Your rules for shoot on sight

If I don't know them I shoot them. Can't be too careful, you never know they might be a brain dead walker...
  10. Dammit got hit by a hacker on US 858. In Cherno using an M107 with Thermal scope shooting noobs on the beach and cherno. Damn annoying really.

    Im that bandit....

Just from a technical standpoint COD is the least innovative game series in the last decade with updates to the engine rivalling that of Porsche's design department. From a gameplay point of view it's quake 3 with a realistic skin, as most weapons don't have bullet drop, all guns have arbitrary damage instead of realistic, etcetera. The more you look at the series in detail its only real claim to fame is that it got the Console crowd playing FPS's in large numbers, but Halo takes the crown of getting FPS's popular on Consoles in the first place. Even if the dude is a troll. He allowed me to highlight the differences between a casual with no idea about the gaming industry and people who can look past the sales figures and accurately critique a game based on is actual positive or negative qualities.

    Im that bandit....

Ignoring the fact the OP is too newb to comprehend most of what he actually wrote, for COD to be considered the greatest FPS it would have to be a CRAP load better than it is. Currently MW3 has lost the majority of it's playerbase in less than half the time the players of Black Ops started to leave and the rot set in with MW2 and it's P2P bullshit. COD is just quake 3 mechanics with a different skin each time (quite literally as it's the id tech 3 engine still there underneath), hell even RAGE is id tech 5, but then that wasn't that great either. Battlefield has fallen into the same pattern as COD and played to the lowest common denominator, BF3 highlighting the issues with that style immensely. Beyond that HL2, Perfect Dark/Goldeneye, Crysis series, Far Cry series, etcetera are all available to have themselves ripped to shreds by criticism too. Unfortunately the greatest FPS ever is probably that mod that's still played over 12 years after release, yes that very tired and ultimately boring game called Counter-Strike. Personally I can't stand it due to the childishness of the design, however it is still easily the most popular FPS out there and still the highest paid in comps, despite being resoundingly beaten in sales by COD each year. Except with CS they just kept the game the same and released a patch instead of a new skin costing another $90 each year... EDIT: BTW yes, COD is a shitty game. It's often released in a buggy state due to Activision's time limitations for development, it's always unbalanced initially (UMP in MW2, AK-74u in MW3, Python in Black Ops...) and more often than not it's designed to make the most money with the least effort. The engine hasn't been updated properly since the first CoD game. There are only minor changes to take advantage of new rendering techniques with newer gfx cards, but highlighting it's issues with map size especially when paired with P2P connections just makes COD kiddies go even further into denial. Ironically, I actually play MW3 (and Black Ops, and CoD 4 MW...) for an amateur league. So when I see scrubs posting crap like you, I laugh hard  So in the end there are currently no FPS's that got the formula close to perfect, especially when there is such diversity in FPS gamestyles. ArmA 2 is designed to be a sim, DayZ uses that to create a unique if very buggy experience. To be proud of being a COD kiddie and bringing that demographic to DayZ, just highlights your level of maturity and lack of understanding of the possible enjoyment to be had in other game styles.
  14. It's not just NZ 20. Nearly every AU/ANZ/NZ server yesterday was hacked in some way. Saw more choppers and vehicles running about than you'd expect to see ingame in a month in less than 5hrs. This trend continued into nearly EVERY US server I tried. Not many US servers are up to the 1.62.95170 or newer patch (my version) so that limited the testing, however nearly all on that patch were suffering hacks being used too. The problem is currently endemic to the game and is something that needs addressing asap. The thing is Battleye was a good protection while ArmA 2 wasn't in the limelight with all and sundry playing it. With it's new found popularity along come those who feel the need to destroy as well as those who just want to enjoy. The former just destroy it for the latter which is just unfortunate. Maybe Rockstar's method of only allowing hackers to join hacked servers is a good idea...

    1911 now a 4 shot kill?

M1911 has awful iron sights (notice the front one missing entirely from visibility when aimed...). Grab a Revolver and accuracy is back, but peeps hear you more (Z's aggro at the same distance as 1911). Either way your problem of 4 shots is either lag or aim, I vote lag, but I could be wrong ;)

    US 858 server admin rage

I was on 858 when it happened, there was a hacker on there, it wasn't the server admins.
  17. RSOblivioN

    Server locked? US 880

It's not Rocket's fault, it's the base game of ArmA 2 and the unfortunately inadequate battleye app that can't keep up with the hackers. To put it in perspective, ArmA 2 has sold over half a million copies in 3 months due to DayZ. The sales rate was up 500% and hasn't dropped off the Steam top 6 despite not having a flash sale of any kind and only being discounted 20% during the sale period. No other game has stayed in the top ten during the sale period. This influx of people has drawn the attention of hackers to previously relatively peaceful online community. The Battleye app was once perfectly capable of dealing with the few hackers who were interested in ArmA 2 but now with the intense focus of players and hackers is not up to the task. Also just looking at MW3 and BF3 the two largest FPS franchises out, neither can effectively combat hackers either. MW3 suffers them on avg every second game played, with BF3 often having at least 2 players per 64 player server using overt hacks, and another 2-6 using covert hacks. Something to keep in mind before blasting devs about hackers when it's such a tough thing to combat in an online FPS scenario.
  18. Really? Meta-gaming is what makes the MMO EvE work. If there was no intrigue outside of the game it would be stale as all hell ingame. I personally think more people meta-gaming and expanding the interaction in and out of the gameworld is fascinating and could even be used to great effect to add depth to the game.
  19. Yeah night time is easily the best for DayZ, Hell using some simple techniques you can run flat chat through a forest on a semi-dark night ingame. When it goes overcast and total black, then it's a bit harder but there's usually enough ambient to do it. Depends how sensitive the rods in ya eyes are. Though for me true night is easily come by as I live in a non-polluted area.
  20. Just got shot by a cheater in Stary Sobor 1:35am (+10GMT) on NZ 19 server. Using a silenced FN FAL warping about Stary. Thought something was odd when there was no loot in Stary except the odd tin can (even they were rare). Dude was using an Infected skin with black survivor clothing. So bored of these cheaters, no damn skill.
  21. RSOblivioN

    NZ19 cheater in Stary Sobor

The lack of loot was eerie as in we found about 4 tin cans in ALL of Stary, so no loot with no-one doing a proper loot run is odd. The dude with the infected skin well I didn't know it was able to be got, do now though. Also it was no M4A1 CCO SD. Not when it's that big with a 20rd mag.
  22. RSOblivioN

    Too many 'Dodgy' players around?

LOL the amount of tents and vehicles I've looted and stolen is on the rise. Finding them in places that are not common is easily the fastest way to gear up outside of sniper hunting in Cherno/Elektro. So next time you hide something where no-one will find it, just remember that someone will find it ;)
  23. RSOblivioN

This game is so f*cked up!

You skill at writing certainly rivals your skill with a microphone. One of the few youtube vids I noticed ha millions of people view and still have more dislikes than likes, but hey it's almost Friday ;) As for the lag post your computer spec's. The problem could be your computer or could be the server you chose.
  24. RSOblivioN

    Can't Reload Pistol?

Yeah I had that, but today it started working normally again. Dunno what caused it though.
  25. I believe the theoretical potential for CryEngine 3 is actually well over 1000 sq km. If using a normal map based rendering system it wouldn't be much better than Arma's map (except for detail) however there are other methods out there for map making/usage in engines and the limitation of size can be overcome with the right minds thinking about it. As for versatility and backwards compatibility you would be looking at a DX11 gfx card minimum and a quad core CPU (preferably a Sandy-Bridge level Intel or Phenom II quad-core or higher). That would be the minimum to run with tessellation set to low which is the best way to do Level of Detail, rather than having multiple models for the different LoD's (the things which are responsible for pop-in and sudden detail changes). By the time of release (2013/2014 for a proper product given a 2 year dev cycle) those specs would be respectable and very viable for 60% or more of gamers to on a PC (at that time of release) to have as well as giving the possibility of cross compatibility with current and next gen consoles from a business perspective. As for the map creation yes it takes time, however with the tools being developed constantly and the new tools available, populating the map/world with detail is so much easier. Pathing is especially easy in CryEngine, though currently it uses two methods for indoor and outdoor, however that looks set to update soon.
