You probably can, but it will be an awful experience. There are too many controls to map to a pad, plus it's just not set up (yet, maybe never will be) for use on a Pad.

Turn off clouds. Ensure aspect ratio (in interface settings) matches your monitor, then ensure the 3d rendering matches your aspect ratio (requires game restart). Remeber it's a horrible unoptimised alpha, and that people with $2000 gaming rigs still suffer poor performance in DayZ. I only had to do this once, but that's how I did it indeed. The icon on the taskbar never properly loaded after that until the game was relaunched completely, it was just transparent until that time. -
OP - I hope you realise we're not having a go at you, just offering some justifications for some of the dilemmas you've described. (Just for the record, I too have terrible eye sight, but at least in my case I can squint to read the signs. I can't obv speak for the level of eyesight you have.)

So far I've a mere 40 hours clocked in the game. I've met with friends every day I've played. We use road signs and landmarks (inc the sun) to find each other, usually within 1 hour of playing on any given night. It's not impossible, it's just not easy -- and it's not supposed to be.
