    I thought death was permanent

Server couldn't properly save progress. Consider yourself lucky, I guess. It usually happens at the wrong time, when you have just found epic loot and then the server d/c's and you reconnect to another only to find your character has not been saved after last time you logged out.

    Shock after login

Shock is not the same as unconsciousness. AFAIK, shock is indicated by a small, white icon of broken "connection" similiar to icon of broken bones.

    Shock after login

Shock occurs if you take lots of damage. If you logout in a shock you will become unconscious for a time. So it's the other way around, kinda. This is to prevent avoiding combat by disconnecting. You can avoid effects of shock (unconsciousness) by not disconnecting while in shock.

    Zelociraptors against 10 hours newbie

Zombies can swim. Swimming can also make you lose your stuff, so it's not really recommended. What works best for losing zombies is breaking their line of sight and then avoiding contact either by vision or hearing from there on. Zombies also can't run indoors, you can lose them in buildings. They can also climb ladders, open doors and climb stairs. Or glitch through walls and floors... In short, zombies are now mostly working as intended.
