I'm not going to talk about zed AI here, but the game mechanics surrounding the zeds. As of today, zeds are only a bit annoying. They're necessary to make it a challenge to get gear, that's all. They're not the main challenge, even though they can become a challenge if you do something stupid. Also it's a nice experience to have to learn how to loose them. But when you already know that, they succumb to being a minor annoyance. It would be very cool if the zeds could become more of a challenge - not more annoying, but for instance that it's more important to get rid of them, or that you are somehow better rewarded for killing them. As of today, you are punished for shooting them. The punishment is loss of ammo, which is of course fine, but also that more will come, leading to more loss of ammo. And even if you clear out an area, they will just respawn after a while. Maybe that's really my biggest gripe - that I think they respawn to quickly - and not that you'll have to defend yourself against the horde if you do something stupid like shooting. The winnings are at best temporary, that the zeds stops bothering you for a while. I think that's the thing that bothers me the most. They only go away for a while. Somehow that doesn't feel real to me. The whole thing with zeds spawning everywhere, it just doesn't seem right. Even though we're a lot of people on earth, there isn't an unlimited supply of "us", and especially not in small villages and remote areas. I'm OK with aggroing zeds being used by enemies to spot where there are survivors. That's cool. However I'm uneasy with zeds only spawning where there are survivors. Sure, I see how you need to save computing recourses, however, with zeds only spawning where there are players, it becomes too easy to home in on survivors. Maybe a few roamers would mix things up, or a pack patrolling the highway. On the other hand, with the lack of so many other clues as to the whereabouts of survivors, I guess you have to have something to reveal them by... However I wish game mech would present other and more ingenious methods for revealing survivor proximity, like, say, the clues a hunter or police investigator would look for. I usually roleplay it a little, playing to myself that I'm awakening them by my proximity, but I don't completely buy it, most importantly because there is no way I'd awaken zeds over 100 metres away just by my mere proximity. Also I know more will come the moment I've finished killing a pack. It's not like there would be an unlimited supply of zeds in any given area, and it's not like they would react to gun shots several kilometres away either, even though their reaction to gun shots is something I really like. To sum up I don't really have an answer to these problems, but I know they're there and that they can be improved upon in some way. Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas aobut how it could be done.

Shoot on sight vs The No.1 rule of DayZ
kebman replied to Red_Sky's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You, Sir, are not worthy of a reply because you've misunderstood the nature of DayZ entirely by claiming there is a "first rule of DayZ". There are no rules of DayZ, however if you want, you may try to survive, and if that is what you endeavour, then that gives you a few precautions to consider in order to complete your quest, however you've seen fit to undertake it. -
This is extremely simple. If it's impossible to play at night, no one will play. There are already very few who play at night. The only two are, those with NVG's, and extremely adventurous people who enjoy playing with gamma all up. There also one or two hardcore players who enjoy playing at night without both gamma or NVG, but these are far and few apart - and they usually get offed quickly by the players with NVG's, or by zombies who get omnipotent when they aggro at night. The only question then is: Should night play be a sanctuary for those with NVG's? Or should more people get to enjoy playing at night?

40 Suggestions to Improve Realism and Immersion
kebman replied to jaws4096's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
My first critique of this is that it almost only regards weapon systems. There is much more to survival than that. However, there is a limit to the frustration I'm willing to take playing a game. In order for players to come back, there has to be a system of rewards. And only rewarding players who murder and kill on a high pop server is not the way to go. Part of the game for me is going on low pop servers to find some sweet equipment and try it out without having to bother with a million KOSing and griefing bandits. Thus lowering the ratio for players who get that, would just alienate a lot of players, like - for instance - me. I don't really like the KOS aspect of this game - in fact I hate it - and a way of getting away from it, is going to low pop servers. It's a fair option. And without it I'd probably just - I dunno - play solitaire. Not that you care, but I'd certainly think it would be sweet to still be able to play this game in a rewarding manner, although I'm not a 14 year old nerd with no life only out to KOS and grief. Also, making it non-rewarding to go on low pop servers would also alienate many of the lone wolves out there, and people - like me - who don't like to play in teams all the time. And let's face it, the only way to get any good gear on a high pop servers is being in some clan, unless you're a beast of a player (or a cheat). There should be an option for the more casual player, and that option is the low pop server that still rewards you with good gear. Anyway... I'm pretty sure the real reason a lot of people have high end equip isn't low pop servers - no, it's hackers duping and spawning in stuff. Deal with them, and the un-even spread of good gear will vanish. -
I wish you luck! :beans: Admins kick for no reason, apparently. I got kicked for finding a camp places in inside Castle Zub. Just went back in, and raided some more. I guess the admin didn't dare doing something stupid since I wasn't breaking any rules.

Must be a nice map to 1) snipe on and 2) avoid snipers on. -
Helicopter crashes, do they ruin the intensity?
kebman replied to jdz (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That is, if you can find a motorcycle, car or helicopter. I don't think heli crashes are too common. In fact, I think they need to be just that many to make it a real possibility for someone without a motorcycle, car or helicopter to find a heli crash and get some decent loot. -
Addressing "DayZ Game Mechanics thread".
kebman replied to gambles's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This isn't a board game, bro... A board game has rules. This is a sandbox simulation. It has no rules, like the real world. And to make sense of the real world, we've got morality. In fact, if you really try to put yourself in the shoes of the character you're given, making moral choices makes the game even more interresting to play. Also, I think people should be careful about claiming to know the point of this sandbox game. It is whatever players make it. However, saying that someone's missing out if he does not do X is fair. -

kebman replied to SillySil's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This isn't a board game. What rules? Except those rules that ban hacking, there are no rules, unless you take into account game mechanics and the laws of physics. That sound awfully like the real world, where morals matter. Oh, but you are. You're hurting people's feelings. Thus you're being immoral. -
Why would you want to surrender? :D

I shoot people who: are camping up high, or sniping are storming at me (with or without a horde of zeds after him) sounds suspicious who shoot at me (no mercy) I avoid people who: are armed (to the teeth) but not in my way are accompanied by friends, especially bandits I befriend people who: seems like they are in trouble seems friendly, but I can stay in cover from are unarmed or just have a hatchet (but I'll keep my distance)

You mean, Anti Personnel Mines? Or do you mean Anti Tank Mines? IED's would sure be cool to help combat hoarding! ;)

kebman replied to SillySil's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This game is heavily about morality. It is in fact all about it. Yes, players did agree to play DayZ. They may not have aggreed to the rules, though, especially yours. And if you break their perceived rules, especially when you know it will ruin their chance of enjoying their way of playing the game, then you're being immoral. Spreading grief is... immoral. In fact, it goes to the core of the term. If you want proof, search it up on Wikipedia. It's simply not nice to destroy someones sand castle. If you do, then you're being immoral. However, this game lets you be immoral in a safe setting. You can purposefully explore your darker sides in this game, and see where it brings you. However, I do not think the game is an accurate description of what it means to be immoral in real life, for instance it's way too few social reprecussions for it compared to real life, but at least it gives you a taste. The sad thing is that some people get stuck in a loop of only being immoral. They never see any reason for trying out being moral. No wonder, with so few rewards for it, I guess, but that's how it is. -
Think about it: If everyone wanted the Hero Skin, the game would become boring again. The Hero Skin will only work in a world full of depraved assholes.

The case of the disappearing cow....
kebman replied to BIOSEMTEX's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My cows never give a single fuck when I kill them. -
We've got snakes even here in Norway, the Common European Viper. If you get bitten by one, you get painful swelling and sometimes nausea. In most cases people recover, but on rare occations it's lethal. Actually there are quite a few poisonous snakes in Russia, at least if you go further East: Gloydius blomhoffi Gloydius halys Gloydius intermedius Gloydius saxatilis Gloydius ussuriensis Rhabdophis tigrinus Vipera sachalinensis In Eastern Europe and further East, you may stumble upon these poisonous vipers: Long-nosed Adder Pallas' Viper (Akistrodon halys) Ursini's Viper (Vipera ursinii) Nikolsky's Adder (Vipera nikolskii)

I see car wrecks everywhere, but let's be real. In a zombie apocalypse, cars would be plentyful. What would be a huge problem, is gasoline.

Let me paint you a picture of DayZ game mechanics.
kebman replied to SillySil's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Personally, I stopped reading when you wrote "morality", and only skimmed the rest. Now, with that needlessly offensive remark out of the way, let me explain why. If you think this game is as simple as chess, or a hex board game, then you're sadly mistaken. The reason is simply that this game caters to the possibility of taking real moral choices. You don't really have to kill other players to "win" this game. There are other ways to play it. Thus morality becomes a real issue, because what you're doing is essentially to topple over other people's card houses, or destroy their castles of sand. Were this a game you could "win", that would be OK, and the sand-castle builder would be the loser. However, in a world where people build sand castles for their own enjoyment, or if they play a game of solitaire, and then you come along and mess everything up for them, then that makes you an asshole - morally speaking. You do not know if the other player aggreed to play a game of PvP with you. You just went ahead and assumed it. And as we all know, assumption is the mother of all fuckups. This is not a simple hex board game. It's way more complex than that, and if you play the game in a way that other's don't like, prepare to be called an asshole. Probably you are one too, especially when you're too weak to admit that you did it to have fun on the expence of others. I mean, at least proper bandits admit that they do it to have fun on the expence of others, and don't hide behind moral bullshit like "this is just an advanced hex board game". The only thing you're right about is that in this game you're not punished for bad behaviour. Instead you're mostly rewarded for it, unless someone is smart enough to find a hatchet and bring it to some griefer's head on Sniper Hill. What could have been a great experience in finding new friends and starting a cooperative adventure, is reduced to dodging bullets from people who just enjoy spreading grief. On the other hand, people who play this game, really can't complain about it either, as it truly is a sandbox, and having fun at the expence of others is part of this game. In a way it brings an added element of challenge to the game. Not only do you have to dodge infinite amounts of zeds, but you must also, for some reason, dodge snipers - because people are evil. :) I'm all happy about it, of course, because I know that it means I now can go on a rampage an play Punisher on all those mindless griefers up there on Sniper Hill. It's part of the game, and it's all fun challenges to get over, if you ask me - just don't try to explain something stupid, like that this game is wihout or above or under - or whatever you call it - in relation to morals. Or morale, or whatever the hell it is you call it. As much as I like discussing this game, I much prefer playing it. And about that... -
I was bored by the woods, so I went to Cherno, met some survivors, and killed them. So you work hard getting your gear, trying to do... what, exactly? If you want some action, just head to the nearest city. It won't take long. You don't require top gear. A Lee Enfield is probably enough. Then you can stalk other players and have fun with PvP. Or you can try making contact in various ways, getting them to do stuff under the threath of death. Or you can find a wire fence, or something, and troll a bit, create some bottle necks, shoot and miss on purpose, aim for the legs, or do whatever you like. Hell, you can even try to climb the bell tower without getting shot. It's all for the kicks and giggles anyway. :D And in fact, if you have anything more valuable, you'll probably just feel bad when you finally fuck up and loose it, albeit it makes the trip into town a helluva lot more exciting. Having better gear is only really worth is up North, when you need to get serious with the clans. Otherwise, it's a waste of time (unless you only plan on grief-sniping) - especially in the city. The city's for two things: Having fun tro-lo-lolling, or getting basic civ gear fast. That's all.
-
The readers with keen eyes will see that, while there are story elements in the original post, the main point of the post is actually a suggestion to those of you who wonder about what to do with all that fancy gear you harvested on those low pop servers. I'm guessing that point was totally lost on Lid here, and thus it might be lost on some lurkers as well, so I thought this clarification might be in order. Here it is: If you've got tons of gear and you're affraid to loose it all, then dump it in a tent, and head towards a city to have some real fun, player versus player, or troll versus victim, or however you'd like to go about it.
-
So you get all that gear. Leave it in the tent. Go to a city. Get a Lee Enfield. Have fun outsmarting the other players. When you finally want to punish a sniper or something, go to your tent, find something big, and get your vengeance.
