All you need is an extra set tucked away in a car or a tent. After that is taken care of, I can play the game to the fullest, trolling, griefing, or being a hero giving rides and patching people up. New ideas for how to play the game: Don't gear up. Just get in the way of people. Block entrances, etc. Move into peoples intimate zones. See what happens. Only gear up tin cans, and then go around throwing them at people. Only collect bandages, and be the bandage-man ambulance. "Bandages! Bandages over here!" Hunt tents and carefully set them up at weird places to spook people. Fill them with... wathever you want to give away, and then drop either glow sticks or make a row of campfires to guide survivors to it. So yeah. Anybody else?

Wookie times: It's one of those days I get the strangest luck. While I couldn't find any weapons after spawning bessides a hatchet, I did find a ghillie suit. Trying my luck lone wolfing further north, I suddenly find a tractor parked in a bush not far from Polana. While I'm thrilled, it also get's me a bit apprehensive being without a gun and all. After a quick peek inside the tractor, I see that it's only semi-functional, so I decide to head down to Polana to hunt for some gear while hoping that whoever parked the tractor there gave up and logged out. My hopes were soon crushed. On my way there I get alerted by zeds moving too far away, so I immediately dart for concealment. I could've found a better place. I was hidden in a small cluster of trees in the middle of the fields above Polana when I spot the enemy: Two heavily armed heroes moving up the hill, seemingly going towards Berezino. I cursed my luck while keeping them in my sights and taking a closer look with my binos. I didn't get a great look at them at first, but for some reason they tracked back, but then stopped. They must have become aware of strange zed activity as they lay down to scope out the town from the hill. I actually found it a bit strange that they never saw me, but then again, I was in full wookie gear and hiding in the bush. They weren't being too careful and proned right in the open, though far enough apart for it to be hard to quickly snipe them. One of them clearly had a powerful sniper rifle, possibly an AS50 AWS due to it's oversized scope. He also had a Coyote backpack and a range finder. "Damn cheaters" I remember thinking, while at the same time dreaming of having a rifle of my own. If I did, they would have been dead, and the tractor would be mine. Still, there wasn't much I could do. Fearing that they would spot my position at any moment, I decided to slowly vanish backwards into the bushes and disappear into the woods, like any true wookie would. Weren't it for a stray zed aggroing on me, I would have gotten away unnoticed. When it happened, I just thought "What the hell" and went right out in the open, turned against them and gave them the old Q-E-Q-E flip-off. My offence didn't go unnoticed, and soon bullets started raining down on my position. My pulse raised into the roof and I started laughing uncontrollably, yet I still got away unscathed. Bye, bye, cheating heroes!

Yelling "Friendly" and then capping someone is a douchebag move. If you do it, you're a dickhead. Know it. Feel it. Accept it. It's not banditry. It's being a dickhead. Now, this has never happened to me. I'm extremely happy about that. But I've heard stories, and to be honest, it just makes me sad. (Got killed plenty of other ways, tho.) So why has it never happened to me? Because if someone, for any reason, approaches me, I'll immediately command them to stop - especially if they yell friendly. Then I'll have a chat with them at gunpoint, preferably from cover. Then it's usually easy to assess if he's legit or up to no good. If he does the wrong thing, he will be severely punished for it. Also, if I'm holed up somewhere, I always warn people to stay the fuck away or face the consequences. (Too many times people choose consequences instead of survival, though, so this makes me wonder how smart some people are...) If someone yells "Friendly" I respect that... at gunpoint. In turn I expect the same respect back. Don't be a dickhead.

What DayZ is sadly lacking is true zombie atmosphere. I mean, what we've got already is all well and good, but... You all know this from before. Players make them spawn, and when they do, they just walk about aimlessly until you aggro them. And when they do, they sprint like Usain Bolt. It's just not very cool, althoug good enough to make the mod legendary for doing something that was never done before - make you start the game with nothing, and having you sneak and fight for your life to survive. In the beginning this is what attracted so many players, because it gave the game real atmosphere - atmosphere soon lost when you figure out how to dodge the zeds... (And most players gear up and lets the griefing begin.) What if... What if they simply behaved a little more like in the lore? That is, slowly awakening, purposefully, but slowly hunting you in large packs? Waiting in dark corners to lash out at you if you're not careful? Breaking trough wooden planks, climbing up from graves or catacombs or from the sewer? Maybe there were simply too many of them to get past a certain area, and you'd have to be smart to find a way past - or maybe trick them in some way... After all zeds aren't known to be too smart. How cool wouldn't it be if they were in every town to begin with, without players spawning them? How cool wouldn't it be if they were sleeping (or relaxing, if you will) but that your smell would slowly wake them, and only your stupid mistake would aggro them? ...as opposed to how it is now, where they aggro a kilometer away. If they moved slower, and in bigger packs, they could still aggro at a kilometre away, but you'd have time to cover your tracks and try to get a way. Or maybe traps could be set in place, where some of them would flank you from the side? How cool wouldn't it be if you could actually clean them out of smaller towns, or an area of a bigger town? Or maybe exploit the fact that most of them went after a large band of survivors? Or maybe even try to lure them (or transport them) to an enemy camp of survivors? That could be end game stuff only possible after collecting enough ammo, or after barricading your turf properly. Then you could swoop in with a heli, or aggro them with a car, either to corral them or to lure them away with noise. Ah, the epic stories that players would see unfold! And before you scream "alpha", or cry about the few possibilities the Arma engine gives, let me tell you, I don't really care about any of that. I just think it's too bad such a game haven't been made yet... ;)

What's a Nuff?

No, survivors just got better at hiding.

How to "officially" pronounce "Day Z" ?
kebman replied to Awearness's topic in New Player Discussion
Correct English: Day Zed Also correct: Day Zee Incorrect: Days Edit: Apparently also correct: Potato, although I prefer tomato. -
Communist: +1 bonus for helping out in the beginning, but is really power hungry so receives a +10 bonus for shooting friends later Democrat (corrected): Starts with a hero costume. Nuff said. ;)

Oh read it all. Would kind of defeat the purpose to answer an unread post. I suggest you read mine too. ;) If you did, you'd see that I actually answered your most important points below "beating it". Short term, look up a hardcore server. It's a much better alternative to making the game unplayable for everyone else. Also there are many good threads about hardcore servers on this forum. Look 'em up!

I'm wondering how hard it would be to catch a hacker. What kind of methods could be used to catch one? Teleportation How hard would it be to run a simple speed check? Whenever a player's speed peaks beyond that of a chopper, you'll know he's been teleported. However, that would still not prove that it was the player who did the actual scripting for the teleportation. It could just as easily still be the victim of a teleportation hack. There would have to be other indicators supporting that it was a hacker. Thus to prove a hacker, multiple teleportations would have to be logged, or usage of illegal gear - and about that... About spawning in gear How hard would it be to run a simple check for where people get stuff? If a player suddenly got a lot of gear at a location without a spawn, there would have to be another dead player there for it to be legitimate. With the addition of that tell-tale white cardboard box, the admins could be pretty sure of catching a hacker red handed. So I'm just wondering how hard could it be? Also I'm wondering about other methods to catch hackers.

Was in the tents of Stary when I spotted a bambi atop the hill. Out of the blue he started taking out zeds in the camp with his AKM. I didn't know his intention, and I'd just gotten some sweet equipment, so I decided to take him out. I edged towards the door, leaned out, scoped in and got him right in the face with my DMR. He bled out frighteningly quick. I don't think he even knew I was there until I fired my rifle. He was probably a great guy, but he quite frankly scared me when he opened fire just like that.

So you'd have teams of people spawning in the same town? I can see the sens in that. However, then the other team would be the enemy, always? Or could peace be made, to build civilization? IMO factions isn't too shabby an idea, however, it kinda leaves out the "surving" part, or the part where you spawn and get some gear, and hope you'll meet someone friendly. As it is now, the only really trustworthy and friendly players it's possible to meet, are the ones you play with over Skype or what not. If they fixed that part of the game, and made a better system for people to team up - possibly by entering in game factions - then sure, I think that would make the game even better. But it would have to be after the fact. Not before you spawn in. Like gangs, a facition member could get - or earn - some piece of clothing or other distinguishing mark. Upon death, the player would have to start over. I... don't know how it could be constructed.

Don't you just love it when people leave bear traps in tents/vehicles?
kebman replied to Parasprite's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The beartrap. Such a great idea. I just love the feeling after setting one. It feels like... trololo. Other than that, I'll probably never see one actuallt go off, unless it's my legs getting trapped. I would also love to see: Beer traps -
When I read "I beat this game" I thought about the guy who claimed that he'd beaten Yoga. I can understand that you got bored. But that you beat DayZ? Man, DayZ beat you! So the Usain Bolt zombies are now going to be given the ability to trip players? Do you even comprehend how annoying that would be? I agree that zombie mechanics, and animations, need to be drastically changed, but for the better, not for the worse. Zombies move in packs. They awake when they smell you and aggro when you do something stupid. They wait for you around the corner, behind that door or under those floors. They poke holes in doors and walls and drag you into it while gnawing at you. However, they're not soccer players who trip you to get the ball. OK, sure. The game lacks an end game. I get that. Changing the zombie mechanics would change that. It would make it possible to take entire towns. It would make it possible to build real shelters, by boarding up houses and sending out parties to get supplies, and maybe even a working car. Maybe you could get electricity going, and fire up the radio, and make a new civilization, and thus grant you immense power - coveted by the bandits who want's it all for themselves. Then wars would break out over territory, stationary gear, and portable resources. I don't know about the anti-game, but that sort of gameplay would be heaven for a Zombie Apocalypse gamer. Such a game still doesn't exist, but there is a huge market for it - a market so thirsty that they're willing to make do with DayZ, and DayZ mostly delivers, but my real hopes are for the standalone. Oh man, if only Rocket does this right... B)

Fishing off Death Mountain
kebman replied to Reverend Killjoy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Reverend Killjoy: Tsk, tsk... You must truly suck at this, given that the only players you can find are freshly spawned and unarmed bambis who, because they've got nothing to lose, run right in the open. So great going there, griefer. You've just done one notch better than the common cheater. That is, unless you actually found your coveted DMR during legit play... Stil you deserve nothing but contempt, so eat it up, dude. I bet the first one who kills you can do it with a hatchet because you're too occupied with your turkey shoot. I bet you want to prove me wrong too, but then you'd just play right into my hands. ;) -
This is how you take a hostage...(video)
kebman replied to a_typical_noob's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No, this is how you blow a poor fellow up with a satchel charge. ;) I could only hear music, though. Didn't you get game audio, or are you covering something up? -
I think the game is evolving. More people are starting to see the point in daring to do something different, and maybe even get to know someone. This game is nothing more than what you make it. ;)

Complete DayZ Satellite Map (One Large Image)
kebman replied to #Sleepy's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I can't help thinking... There's got to be a better way! -
All well and good. Seriously, what this mod need, is to take OUT some guns. ;) Or replace many of the western weapons with weapons that are more authentic to the region the mod takes place.

Old DayZ player here, are KOS and hacking low these days ?
kebman replied to the_xxi's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I hear hacking is lower, though strangely, I've seen more hackers now than ever before... Stuff like teleportation, spawing of weapons and vehicles, and last, but not least, artillery strikes. Somebody tried to artillery strike me and a friend on a very laggy server in the middle of nowhere. It hit right behind us just as we entered safe distance. Weren't it for lag, we would probably be dead. What I do is that I mark those servers and never visit them again. Never experienced hacking on servers with special software to take down hackers, though, however often these are full, strangely enough. ;) -
Safest gameplay: Get a knife, a hachet, matches and a cantine, then run into the wood and stay the hell away from zeds and other players. Gets boring in the long run, though... Hardest gameplay: Make it your mission to run into the line of fire of all the players you see while yelling "YOU SUCK DICK!" to them at the top of your lungs into Direct chat. I try to find the middle ground between these two.......

@BoomyGT: Yes, sounds great! IMO, the only way to achieve such epic experiences in the game, is to rewamp the way zombies spawn entirely. Currently, players cause zombies to spawn, i.e. zombies only spawn where there are players. Also, the spawning is very glitchy, and zombies continue to spawn wherever there are players. Also, players in vehicles neither spawn zombies, nor does zombies attack vehicles. As it stands, this does several things for the game: It makes it non-sensical, or at least impractical, to have independent zombie events it makes it impossible to clear a town or area of a town completely It gives players invehicles an unfair advantage when hunting other players However, if zombies get to spawn independently of players, this is what we get: Independet zombies that wake when they catch the scent of players and aggro when they do stupid shit. Some of them will cluster into hordes who roam the map in search of food, and then gravitate towards those places where the most players are (heh, the places giving off the most scent of the living blood of Christian men), creating that classic scenario of the fort that becomes overrun. The players then have to react to this, either by cooperating, or by hiding their ass in the bush. Towns can be taken and defended (giving a natural place for the KOS'ing sniper), and wars can break out over places that provide good resources and defense. And when the horde of zombies pass that bridge where those two quarreling players are in the middle of shooting each other, they will be fucked if they don't stop for a moment to cooperate. Zombie instances only spawn where there are NOT players - of course after a sensible algoritm that doesn't swamp memory. Zombie skin and texture, things that require memory and computing power, can for instance still be triggered by player presence. The main thing is that the zombie instance are med independent of players. Some of these instances need not be sleeping, but can cluster together into independent hordes that roam the map, or infest a certain town. When done that way, it becomes much more easy to make those classical hordes of zombies that you're used to from the lore, the books, the films, the TV-series. But it can only be done with a model that spawn zombie instances outside of player activity. @That1neguy: No! (Also, you're stealing the thread. Stop it!)

Over 2500+ cheaters busted with admin spectating tool
kebman replied to soppa's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Biiiig problems How do you know if the hacker teleported himself, or if it were some poor sod being unwillingly teleported by another? How do you know if the rabbit wasn't just a poor sod that was hacked? A bit unfair to ban possible victims, don't you think? Also, the tool can be used to spy where regular players put their bases, or to spy on legitimate tactical movement, making the tool itself yet another way to cheat... -
Which games did you abandon for DayZ?
kebman replied to Octopus0nFire's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I abandoned Battlefield 3, maybe forever. It's a shit game compared to this. Also, it has caused me to largely ignore PS3 games like Gran Turismo. I still play Minecraft, though. :D It's kind of similar, I guess. -
25 punds... That's what it cost for a meal at a restaurant. It takes about an hour of socializing to eat the meal, if you're on a date. Now, drop that date, and possibly have hundreds of hours of fun instead. It's clearly more of a waste to go on that date! OK, so maybe you would get with that girl, but in the end you'd just get tired of her nagging and long for some serious computer gaming. Also, you might get her pregnant, and how much time do you think you'll get for serious gaming then? Also, the world is soon over-populated. Skip the date, save the world!
