Hatchets, Fire axes and melee weapons - how do you use them
Scawtygs replied to Mojak16's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
i thought one of the most recent updates made it so melee weapons didn't reload? (i haven't used a hatchet or anything in months, so i haven't seen it in action, i haven't played much on the newer updates) -
Addressing the two biggest complaints regarding First Person
Scawtygs replied to guyver1's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
i watched your video, and i know this is an old argument. But i was a little surprised that you'd assume that people were double tapping left-alt, rather than just holding it down. That's about one of the first things i learned about in DayZ (thanks to using 3rd person) so that i could look around things or around my character as i was running, or sighting around corners. And i found out about turning of the FOV by accident, but had already used 1st person many times before (especially in firefights, there's something about having your eyes behind the gun that makes shooting easier, rather than just crosshairs off in the distance) SO once i fixed the FOV, I began using 1st person in most instances other than when i am 'exploring and scouting'. So i use both for their distinctive advantages. If SA sticks us under one or the other, i'll be a bit disappointed, but not wholly hurt. -
Urban Dead - An example for a good Zombie MMO
Scawtygs replied to BlakkM9's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
One large aspect of DayZ (particularly the Arma II Engine) is that you don't have any inherit skills built into the game. It all depends on YOUR understanding and skill. If you don't know how to zero or range scopes, then sniper rifles are pretty much out of your skill set. Flying helicopters really depends on your ability to cramp your hand into the proper procedures and use a delicate mouse hand otherwise you crash, or are atleast a slow, unbalanced floating target for better skilled bandits. That's what i love about this game, and wish they would expand on (such as the ideas about radios and barricading) The actual usages of items and materials should be difficult enough (or atleast timeconsuming enough) That it reflects the actual skill and understanding of the player behind the character. For example, make radios require some maintanance and repair, and you have to actually get a small understanding of circuits and a concept of telecommunication systems to get a system of radios to work. rather than just spawning in with a +5 affinity with radios. This brings the point of what are they trying to achieve with the SA? Does rocket want to bring in more casuals with a simpler system of skills and character traits? Or does he and his team want the skills in-game to be totally driven by the abilities of the players and how they handle the game? P.S. I love RPGs with skills and points and all of those point-tracking-systems and stuff (skyrim for example) but that's not what DayZ should be, nor what it was meant to be. It's meant to place everyone in the same position (on the beach, with just a bandage, some clothes, and maybe a can of food and a coke) with an entire ruined country ahead of you. No classes, no damage points, no leveling, no trait trees, nothing but the genuinely ability of the players within the world. (this is why i don't get angry at bandits sniping me from 800 yards or something, because i'm too busy applauding them for their skill, even if i do see that there was no point (but hey, there are pointless murders happening everywhere today, why not after the Z-apocalypse and especially in a game)) Thanks for listening -
Do you want Wild Animals in DayZ? Yes or No?
Scawtygs replied to Raider (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
plus, DayZ can extend into more territory of the "survival" genre in the standalone, with their implementation of crafting, and cooking, and more. Hunting-gathering and protection from wild animals is a natural extension of the world DayZ will be creating -
Do you want Wild Animals in DayZ? Yes or No?
Scawtygs replied to Raider (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I voted yes, because after any apocalypse, all the pet dogs would revert into a wild wolf-behavior (maybe not as strong or fierce depending on breeds) And all the wild animals would thrive without such a reduced population of humans, but the numbers depend on just when DayZ is based after the disaster, pretty recent i imagine, so there wouldn't be too many wild animals making their way back into human environments yet. -
i like this idea, build an actual camp site, and just live off of wild animals, lakes, campfires, and all of that, Build a genuine Fort in the woods. I may give you a shout, just what time zone are you in? my skype: scawty.godscribe

is dayz 100% PvP on the long term?
Scawtygs replied to _Anubis_ (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I liken it to Minecraft. When i caught sight of minecraft, my mind buzzed and brought me back to my childhood with legos, and i saw in the potential of pure creativity and pure freedom. I loved mincecraft the most when it didn't give you a single hint at what you're supposed to do (much like DayZ does the first few tries through) So it never surprises me when people whined about minecraft being boring, or lame, or having no point.....That's because it has no point to be made. The trick is you make it what you want it to be. It's sad how many people lack imagination, or even the concept of it. It's very nearly the same thing with DayZ, except there are some more tangible goals, and immediate needs, and the fact it's a glitchyalphazombiemod makes it more important to be imaginative, and enjoy it. I still can't understand why people think DayZ is becoming like CoD.....last time i played CoD, i didn't spawn with nothing on the coast of a massive map, with endless directions to explore, have to scavange my own food, water, tools, maps, clothes, camouflage, weapons, ammo, and even vehicles, parts, gas......What i'm saying is. I never flinch when i die in CoD. but every time i die in DayZ from another player (whether it's from a huge firefight, or just sniped from across te town) my heart races to the point of failure (this coming from a guy with major heart problems (probably should take it easy)) and i become flush with almost the sense of death and it strengthens my need to live longer, survive better, and kill faster (or protect the helpless more if i have the means) the next time i spawn. SO.....quick answer, DayZ will never be like a CoD deathmatch unless a hacker places everyone in a gated off area of cherno, arms them with the most recent military equipment, fix their blood/hunger/thirst/temp. meters to 100% permanantly, resets the respawn to put them straight back in that area, and not to lose their gear........THEN, then DayZ will have some similarities to a CoD deathmatch.....if this is not happening to you, then STFU about your own PVP problems. AND the endgame of DayZ IS: to survive, and do all that you can to survive until you die (whether PvE or PvP). If you keep dying, then maybe you are putting yourself in the way of other players' bullets far too often. If you can't shoot them first, then stay away from them, Be stealthy, or just stay away from the busy areas. Like in life, Your death is mostly likely through your own folly. -
someone said something about dinosaurs being 'unoriginal' ....uhhhmmmmm i don't think he's understanding of the fact that this is a *Zombie Game* which is very overdone in many things now, and is becoming unoriginal faster than Vampires after twilight started(not necessarily started, but mostly thrust it into cheesy-dom) that huge vampire-love trend I haven't seen a experienced a decent movie/game/book/song/anything since Jurassic Park 3. and the SEGA game way back when (turok was just....horrible) SO i think it's safe to say, a current gen Dinosaur game (especially with some of the newer facts about dinos and new species' details and everything is taken into effect) would be flipping amazing

i don't know, but teach me how to make maps and all the coding and everything, and i'd definitely be one of the first to push this dream into reality

and plus, purely wilderness maps, with more hunting and camp building elements would be a welcome change from scavenging everything (i want to get food from somewhere other than a pile of ssshhcrap in a random house). People say america is overdone with zombie apocalypse stuff....I say Cities are overdone any-pocalypse. Get some forests and bears and wolves mixed in with wilder, more fierce zombies that work in packs...(redneck zombies, i'd love to shoot those all day)...i like that idea. Damn i wish i knew how to do that ssshhtuff.

i don't think you'd have to make the regions 1-to-1 in scale. Just make reasonably chernarus sized maps for all the countries, or regions of countries. So most every European country could be likened to one or two maps about the size of chernarus. If you look at cherno and elektro, they look nothing like real cities, they're much too small with disproportionate densities. I live outside a measily 2,500 pop. city, and it's sprawed across a half of the equivalent chernarus map. So think of the maps just being condensed relations to their real world counterparts. For instance, a smaller european nation like Latvia would only really need one map, then with larger ones, like Italy could be separated into many maps based around regions and major citys such as: Venice, Alpine north, Milan, Genoa, Tuscany, Florence, Rome (which could be separated more depending on popularity and stuff), all the way down to Sicily and Sardinia. Although some places could be done 1-to-1 in scale, and be amazing, such as Monaco, that would be an amazing real-life map to be in, just saying. Everybody is criticizing this guy's idea without thinking on how it's spirit could be achieved. I LOVE THIS IDEA, i just sure wish i had the time and experience to make a local map for this future endeavor. My beans are yours

Don't you wish there was a western map?
Scawtygs replied to CaptGentry's topic in New Player Discussion
Yes, America is fairly overdone with almost any genre of book, movie, game, or fan fiction you can find. It's a very overdone place all together, but i'm so amazed at how often everyone does the same three spots in america "generic NY copy", "generic West Coast City" or "generic suburban areas with some forests and way too many 'brodonald's'". I think what he was trying to say is, yeah, the desert of takistan was okay, and the european based maps are intriguing, but america has so many more GUNS!!!!!!!!! LET'S GO PLOWIN' ACROSS THE DESERT AND PLUNDER THE VILLAGES WITH OUR DODGES AND FORDS (nice note, europe has some crappy vehicles, particularly Eastern europe....when it comes to survival, ferraris are great...but....yeah you see what i mean) WITH OUR CHEAP BUT PLENTIFUL SHOTGUNS, AND EASY TO ACQUIRE EXPLOSIVES, 'MEHRCA IS WHERE THE REAL MEN FIGHT OVER GUNS (another nice note, we have so much more porn, somehow, someone could implement that into the game, and it could be almost an item of exchange, like money (noticing that some maps now have some sort of infrastructure to them now, with safe zones and money). And one final point, i foresee that Americans (due to their anti-neighborly behavior, and lust for personal security) would be more likely to form small societies after such an event, and quicker too. Not saying we're better at government (just, look at it....yeah...) it's more to do with our habits, and just generally how much more space we have to escape the disease. More americans would survive the disease, but more would die with a bullet in their back. -
i'd make sure i smelled like a rotten corpse, you know...so zombies can't smell the difference between me and one of them (although their main senses are probably hearing and sight) But hey, smell is pretty strong, why couldn't a dying body have a good sense of detecting fresh brains nearby?

Add the Mosin-Nagant 91/30 to StandAlone
Scawtygs replied to linuxmaster9's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I have exactly that gun. mine was manufactured in 1944, and still has the hammer and sickle stamped on it. I fire it regularly, and i can get 20 rounds for $8 dollars....and i bought it for about $120 from a crate of 30. It's a super popular gun, with low-upkeep and cheap/plentiful ammo. Perfect for such a game as this "surviving on rarity" -
i'm still pretty new, and i can't help but find NVG before a watch or compass, it seems everytime i die, and i get even the slightest bit north (just out of eyesight of the ocean) i find a remington, some Coke, and a fucking NVG...i've almost never been without a pair and it's almost boring at night because i can see everything so well and am more invisible to zombies. i can see clear as day and run through town without even the slightest fear of zombies or even bandit clans...it's way too easy to stock up at night with such security. And let's be honest...how many NVGs would a fictitious Post-Soviet Micronation have in it's miniature army's arsenal? really? :/

Hey, I'm American, so that covers the language, and time barrier problems, and i'm only really looking to make a good duo or trio, i'm not really looking to making a huge team of guys (5-10+) so if you're okay with just two or three people then that'd be perfect. My skype is: scawty.godscribe

Military-type survivor looking for a team
Scawtygs replied to Yliparoni's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm also pretty new to Dayz, i'm on my 5th character now, but this latest one has been alive for 3 in-game days, i've gotten fairly decent gear, but i'm still looking for people (mainly for a pair or trio, but i don't mind larger groups) I mainly work with full stealth tactics...I'll crawl through entire villiages and towns without killing a single zombie, i have a pretty good gun, but i don't waste it on zombies, i haven't killed a single player, mainly because i avoid them (because i'm alone, don't want to lose my stuff) and i am rather familiar with military tactics as well. I think we may be able to work well together (i don't participate in noob-killing/banditry/douchbaggery or anything either) I'm American, so i only speak English, though i do have a ear in spanish and french my steam is: scawtygodscribe my skype is: scawty.godscribe -
Looking for player to co op with!!!!!!
Scawtygs replied to noncrackuser21's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I sent you a friend invite on steam, i'm free most any time, and i know of a really good server if you prefer fewer players (5-20) I've been trying to get a group started, i have become pretty proficient on my own, i'm still pretty new but i'm not a pure noob. I forgot to give you my Skype: scawty.godscribe Steam: scawtygodscribe -
the point of this game is to represent the real options available to you in a fictional alternate reality. So the variable that is different in a Zombie Apocalypse/disaster is the introduction of these new brain/flesh hungry humans....Humanity hasn't magically become inable to use random objects and tools just because new creatures are introduced. For instance i expect that in real life if the woods around my home instantly became infested with rabid elephants, I should still have the abilities and knowledge of everything that happened before. That includes the use of axes, knives, screwdrivers, chainsaws, hell, even wooden sticks. The point is, if you're going for realism...you don't take out whole facets of weaponry just to create a certain experience. Personally i would never use a gun on a zombie IRL if i didn't absolutely have to. I would use axes, knives, crowbars, swords, and clubs to bash/cut their heads open. And save the bullets for raiders that would most probably shoot back.
-
i totally expected trains to just be there, naturally. I guess the complete encompassing realism does have a few setbacks, and holes....sad really, because the trains would add an almost "wild west" nature to looting, surviving, travelling, and many other encounters. Nice suggestion, have some beans
-
yeah, i'm sure that you'll never "conveniently" near your friends in the wilderness in a zombie-apoc. so i do like the aspect of random spawn locations...it's very challenging and almost a natural aspect of what you'd expect
-
yeah, it's a combination of tools that puts a cursor on the map, i've never noticed it, unless i had a watch, compass, map, and binoculars...so i'm not sure which combination is required. but it does require more than just a plain map
