  1. Took me long enough just to find a server that would accept a vanilla connection. I had to bypass a bunch of slot opportunities even considering the day time population. Most of them look to be running a minimum beta something or other. Anyhow.... Yeah, just checked. Server SESUK1, Ping 32, Minimum Build 87662. My patch 93030 (older beta). Happened 2 out of 4, both times were re-spawns as opposed to quit and load and only happened for 10-20 seconds or so and not so pronounced.
  2. Just re-checked steam vanilla build 87580. (1.60.0.87580) on Virginia 6, Ping 110, Client requirement 1.6. DayZ Patch 1.5.8.4 (tried an RA server first but couldn't get server response) Wild estimates: average player age = 6, ability to communicate = 0, past times include spawn camping, the inability to pick things up and actually announcing the location of the building you are camping from :-/ Re-spawned 3 times and it looks clear, there's nothing odd going on at all now apart from the lag so now I'm confused. Its taking a lot longer than I thought though. Be faster to build my own data centre first (never tried logging on during the day before. :P ) I'll try the rest of the builds when its nice and dark somewhere geographically local.
  3. Every build I tried last night was showing the screen pulse strobe effect and it only happened with DayZ but as I said it was previously fine with build 93153 and didn't occur when Rocket rolled out the 1.5.8.4 hotfix. (apart from hysterical spawn point errors that went fine :P ) If it was only the betas I should have got the same problem then so I don't know where it came from since it only started last night but if its still going on when I can log into the game later I'll try to rollback to beta 93040 and 93030 and see what happens. Yeah, It might be a good idea to shift this thread cos we really need more data to figure out whats going on. Edit: Sod it, I got a few minutes, I'll do it now.
  4. I got this a lot last night and it was doing my head in. Some of the guys I was with thought it might be a new pain effect or something but it kept happening when I spawned for a few minutes before fading out and I used all my painkillers checking it. After some testing I found it would happen on spawning using Arma2OA vanilla, beta patch 93153 and 93160. HDR set to either low or very high, contrast and brightness had no effect. Server host had no effect. (my post processing is set to low since motion blur annoys the crap outta me) Strangely it did not happen on wednesday when I was just using Beta 93153. It didn't occur with any of the regular arma2 single player campaigns. Bugger knows but it appeared to disappear when I went into global chat as opposed to direct but that could simply have been a co-incidence.

    A Server Plan

I haven't seen any solid metrics on the Arma server engine thread performance for chip architectures (I've asked before and got nothing in response annoyingly). But Ionstorm66 and Alfie are essentially correct. The Arma server effectively uses 1 main thread for AI and object co-ordination, a second thread for offloading such stuff as sound co-ordination and the rest of the available threads for things like geometry loading. This means a server should ideally have at most 2 very fast single threaded cpu's. (kill hyper threading on Intel chips etc) A quad core is recommended for single instance servers because 2 cores can be dedicated to the operating system and server services whilst the remaining 2 can be dedicated to the game. In effect a clocked gaming desktop with single quad core and fast ram would easily outperform a multi socket server. (unless you had a bat shit insane server that is).
  6. The metric is pretty straight forward. If queues remain high and wait time is longest on servers during their 'day time' hours whilst central database load remains constant throughout the period (accounting for source IP time skew) people are following daylight. It's not difficult. Posters opinions (being in the extreme minority) as screaming as they can be are utterly irrelevant. Source IP's are easily graphed and if 'day time' machines are being disproportionately fucked they're disproportionately fucked. If there are two major factors involved in primary connection choice. (game time, ping time) and people are trading ping time for apparent game time then there is a concrete reason for them to do so. Simple.

    I just have to ask

Nope. What you are describing is the standard psychological response to heightened stimuli even where the stimulus response is parasympathetic. (The environmental stimulus is perceived as being real by the autonomic nervous system so you can easily wind up with a concrete and in some cases dangerous physiological affect). Normally its a habitual response. (learned). Are you left or right handed?

    Controls?

You really need to do the tutorials. Arma isn't something that's pick-up-able. Previously I had considered setting up a tutorial server to try to help guys out but realised they would need an additional tutorial just to use the voice chat and its broken in any case. :-/ Some stuff when you get used to the interface you'll get yourself. (chating wont help you scout or spot for sniper etc.

How the hell do you get in a server?

Its actually child's play if you pay attention. I was considering doing a video on it because so many people think clicking 'enter' is the solution... seriously. First thing, connect. then sort your servers via ping time. You'll get your local list sorted via response. refresh often. Check their numbers, go for the 48/50 49/50 machines. Occasionally you'll be too late but that's life. (dont try to join the 50/50 machines its a waste of time, that's 50 slots and whatever is sitting in the lobby either conspiring against eveyone else or just being confused) Join the server. (as long as its not maxed when you hit join you're in). Now you are in the lobby and there are the slot placements on the left. (for some reason people love to sit in the lobby and ignore the active list) Scroll the placement list! That 50th place will be gray. Click on it. Watch your name appear in that slot. Click OK. Enjoy game. I've never spent more than 2 minutes looking for a slot. Edit: Please dont hit Enter over and over again, every time you do that a request is sent to the master server and spamming the thing holding connections open permanently and that is the last thing we need .

    Timing of Patch 1.5.8

Thing is that there are many media options to monitor the situation and all of them are available over TCP. There is no point in being nice about it. A server flood will happen but its what you learn about it. (there's no such thing as a politically correct stress test, someone is going to get screwed) Admin message per server: GTFO! were updating and go get the new patch "here", updates on twitter "here"! (then start your performance counters on the client servers and master sql box's), kill the instances, update fast, get a guaranteed metric on line (say 1K slots) open the gates and watch what happens. If a message is broadcast to 5K users and 3K of them don't try to update there's nothing to be done about it bar an IQ test. If 10K people hit one server and the master DB only records 2K transact requests we have an architectural problem and there's something to be learned. If we have 50K requests and gamespy falls over we just know ...well, gamespy is shit.
  13. Get the beta patch and install it. Direct chat is broken so tough. (which is driving me insane) Change your C:\Users\Who ever you are\Documents\ArmA 2\ArmA2OA.cfg file to get rid of the stupid level of pre rendering. 2 Lines. GPU_MaxFramesAhead=3 is good; GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=3 is also good; Have fun and watch your back.

    Humanity should reset on death...

Humanity is about 'YOU', not your character. Your character won't be an asshat when he's dead. You still will be. Some people may well give 'YOU' the benefit of doubt, some may not. If you are afraid of societal judgement you probably shouldn't act like an asshat to start with. Its actually a very simple mechanism. Society labels or at least gives the members of society the means to do so. People in a shitty situation create their own hierarchy. If, for example you want to go all bandit and PK for 'survival reasons' (as so many put it) all you need to do is lose once.

    Keyboard/Mouse Layout and Keys

Good god... Play the Arma tutorials. You own the game right? Despite the confusion and the fact they're terrible they actually help to a degree. Go through them again and again and again. Run the obstacle course, patch your buddy, grab ammo and run the course again. If you can set up a private server just to do it with voice comms on and live with your friends do it. Remap your keys. If you are a lefty remap EVERYTHING and delete the bindings you wont use!!! (teaching granny to suck eggs here) Hint, edit your doc's profile arma2oa.cfg to not use GPU_MaxFramesAhead=1000, 3 is more reasonable and if you want to climb a ladder with your pistol out start spamming 'prone' when you hit the top of it so you won't auto fall off.
