M16A1, Mainly for the well controlled burst fire it provides, but also because of the nice open sights. If you pick your timing right you can fire a burst and hit more than one survivor at a time, decreasing your chances of exposure. Also it's not too loud.

My most recent technique has been to keep watch on a place where loot is known to spawn, wait until the survivor is just about to leave said structure and fire a round or two from a long distance (despite the fact I wont hit them from such a distance.) This usually causes the survivor to panic when they hear the bullets hit nearby. They start running around like a headless chicken, and attract the nearby zeds to chase them down. I don't usually do this to get loot. It's just extremely enjoyable to watch.
