Gotta admit though, it is near-rage inducing when some skitzy zed slaps you from 20 feet away and you're looking at that hourglass and realize you're going to die because of it. I nearly flipped my shit last night over that. Was out near the airfield because only THREE PEOPLE on the dallas area server (nightfall = empty server. fucking cowards) I play most of the time. I know 2 of the other three people. I get there, and get overwhelmed and killed. *sigh* Spawn in Kamenka.. not too bad... So I sprint due north through the forests for what seemed like forever.... finally decide "it's time to go east". wouldn't you know it... just on the southern edge of the airfield. Mind you have only my painkillers, flashlight and bandage. I didn't get ANYTHING on the way up. I manage in the dark to find my corpse, retrieve all my gear. I shimmy up a tower to eat/drink/catch my bearings. Chemlight in hand and m16 loaded and ready, i make my way across the strip. clear all the hangars, nothing useful. Hit the control tower... couple mags and a morphine. Head south to leave, see a zed just on the edge of my light radius... stop dead... back away... zed turns... *SLAP*. K.O. Bleeding. Broken limb. several more zeds rush over... they devoir me. I log off after they finish me. "God dammit" Wife says "Did you get shot again?" "Hell no. bullshit ass zombies. Fuck this game" "Hah, whatever, you know you're gonna log back in" "Nope. Never. Too much bullshit" "Yeah, ok, I've heard that about 50 times in the last week" "I'm serious this time" *clicks dayzcommander* "Never again. Fuck this shit. Too buggy. Too alpha. I'll wait" *clicks favorite server* "What are you doing?" "One more life."

Twice now I've sat, staring in disbelief as I was slapped ONE TIME by a zed, while at full blood and perfect condition otherwise, and be knocked out cold w/broken bones, bleeding and getting hoarded up on. It is a bit frustrating, but it definitely puts the bastards back on the radar for me. I'm still not sure if it's glitchy/bugginess causing it, or if there is a some random chance they can essentially 1 hit kill you. Serves us right, picking them off with high powered weapons all the time.

This issue has been discussed to death, steps have been taken to prevent it, and were revoked because they just led to more problems. Ultimately, due to a limitation of the engine itself, we are likely stuck with this issue for some time to come. There is bound to be a clever way to handle it, but no one has thought of it yet, and we all keep hearing the same handful of uninspired ideas to solve it, each person fervently backing the one they most believe in based on their experiences. At the end of the day, nothing comes of it and everyone feels like someone shat in their cheerios. If it really were "not that hard" or "so simple" to implement, it would be done already. Everyone here has access to the Arma2 editing tools. Feel free to try your luck at solving the issue. I'm certain if someone in this community were able to solve this problem, Rocket would be more than appreciative, as would pretty much everyone who has been teleflanked or denied a legitimate kill because some pussy can't bear to part with his pixelcrack. Considering I pointed out that a /logout would seem to be the cleanest method to handle this, but is unlikely even possible, there is nothing to invalidate. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. -

So i could find a super low population, laggy server (undesirable otherwise) to camp a good spawn for gear.. swap to a hot server where i'm stationed for action... shit hits the fan or I need ammo/food i swap to my laggy, but generally safe server and regear/heal return to hotbed for more action. Great idea! /logout command is probably the best way to go. Server doesn't drop you for 30 seconds/1 minute. You either wait it out, able to interrupt it should the need arise, or you alt-f4 and pray. Solves a plethora of problems, but may not be possible with Arma's current design. -

endgame implies an ultimate goal, but survival is until death. I see no "endgame" as such yet, in spite of having several times been quite well equipped. Traveling light and not keeping a permanent camp keeps you constantly looking for SOMETHING, and anytime you're heading to get medical supplies or food and drink, you're exposing yourself to trouble. Keeps me from getting bored at least. -
I have yet to go more than 10 minutes without finding a hatchet, no matter where I've spawned. Once I've got a hatchet and any beans/cokes I can grab, I get the hell out of the coastal region and head out to smaller towns to get a bit better situated.

I would have suggested ditching your backpack to reduce your profile, but you've got that covered already. keep your head down don't kill the zeds around you don't fire unless you're certain to land the kill move often All pretty common sense. A little tip I picked up from a youtuber, the pub has a nice LoS down the 3 hallways of the office building. Use that to your advantage. I like to drop flares and chemlights a street or two over from my location, but I prefer night time action, if you're a daylighter that won't do any good. Anything you can do to make something ELSE be a focus of attention is a good thing. Make campfires in the park, toss flares over buildings, that sort of thing. I don't bother with high end gear, a lee enfield and a revolver work perfectly fine, and are easily replaced. -

Have you forgotten there are already people who have had bans lifted for being caught with gear that isn't supposed to be in the mod? To get a ban lifted one must first receive a ban. -
The only thing I really see a new engine doing is ramping up the graphics. I've always thought the natural environments look quite stunning in Arma2. I'm a UDK fanboy though, so mention of CryEngine makes me giggle a bit on the inside.

Having play WAY TOO MUCH Unreal Tournament ages ago, Feign Death was just about my favorite trick when i was near death and outmatched. Question is: Does this serve any function with the zeds? they don't seem to care about dead bodies they didn't actively chase/kill. I'm not entirely sure I want this feature though... seems like a good way to create another ammo sink. Maybe that is actually desirable.... I think properly managed, this would be excellent, but I can see it becoming REALLY damned obnoxious. *mixed feelings*

He did actually clearly state not to show them until you DIE, indicating not to fill up the debug menu with more useless data. Otherwise, beans for you.

Death being the end isn't actually unique. It may be quite rare in graphics heavy titles, yes, but it is nothing new. If that's a feature that draws you, give a shot at one of the many dozens of roguelikes out there. I have been a long time roguelike fanatic, so the perm-death feature here was a BIG sell for me. Angband, Nethack, ADOM and TOME are good starters. I'd include DwarfFortress as well, though it isn't purely a roguelike. There are some even more "modern" roguelikes than TOME (Tales of Maj'Eyal) has become, Dungeons of Dredmor for example is quite good, had fantastic graphics and mouse driven interface, and isn't scared to kick your dick off and laugh in your face. Even Diablo 2 (the Diablo series was originally inspired by roguelikes with it's randomly generated dungeon content) had a permadeath feature (hardcore mode). Not to take away from your point, just sharing an often overlooked genre that may interest you if you're a fan of permadeath.

What I think all the crybabies are missing is a key point that the majority of players are NOT bandits, nor do they shoot on sight. They avoid other people as much as possible. Compare that to the behavior of bandits and outright murderers who actively seek other people.... You've probably been spotted and avoided by more people than have taken a shot at you, but there's no way to know. Meh. He won't be missed. -
The Average amount of time survived

From what I've heard, all those really short respawns (under 2 minutes I believe) don't count towards the average. I've seen the same guy respawn about 15 times trying to get a good start position, just a couple hours ago. That said I'm currently on day 2. Last one was 4 hours, before that was 4 days. Learn to use the axe and watch your survival rate increase in magnitudes of 1000% or more. -

i stuck to very low populations for a few days to get used to the movement, weapons, zeds without the additional worry of the players. Once I had a decent feel for the predictable things, I moved back to a big population, local server. Only thing I brought with me was a revolver and some meat, so I felt no shame in it.
