    Defibrillator

Not strictly true. A defibrillator doesn't restart a heart that stopped beating. It 'resets' a heart that is beating in an incorrect rhythm such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia and tries to get it back to a normal or sinus rhythm. When the heart is not beating it is called asystole (colloquially known as flatline), at this point the patient is clinically dead though CPR and the administration of drugs such as epinephrine/adrenaline may help (though recovery is very unlikely). The realistic treatment of gunshot wounds may involve all or some of the following: Tourniquets to stop massive blood loss Use of haemostatic agents Needle decompression IV fluids such as saline Blood transfusions Oxygen Chest decompression/drains Field dressings etc.

Do not make DayZ mainstream noob friendly

A bit off topic but were you in the NZDF? I was in the RNZAMC for a few years and am now in the UK forces. I have fond memories of using the simulator suite (running VBS if I recall correctly) at Linton - is that what got you interested in working with BIS?

    An important how to...

I've been lurking on the forums for the last couple of days instead of playing (internet connection where I'm staying is terrible) and it seems there are a few people who need to stop and take a look at what they're posting. Bitching, whining, complaining and moaning DOES NOT help developers. Clear, concise and coherent bug reports and suggestions DOES help developers. So before another post about how the PvP system is ruining your life or that you think the game is 'unfair' - take a second and use the forms below. ------------------------------------------------------------ DayZ ALPHA Bug/Incident reporting (Please fill in as much info as possible) ------------------------------------------------------------ DayZ Version: Time and date: Server: Bug/Incident: In game location: Screenshots: System specs: Debug/error message: Is the error reproducible: Witnesses: ------------------------------------------------------------ DayZ Suggestion/Feature request form ------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Sir/Ma'am, I, ________ , appreciate the hard work you are putting in to DayZ and the fact that you have made it open for public use. I have been playing for ______ days/hours/weeks and would like to make the following suggestion/feature request: [suggestion here] I think this would be a good idea because: [Reasoning here] I have posted this on the forum as I have searched and not found any other posts suggesting the same thing and would like to introduce this suggestion/feature to the Developers and DayZ community. Hopefully this will result in intelligent discussion and, potentially, the feature/suggestion being used in future releases. Sincerely, ________

    A GODDAMN TRAIN

I would like to see this idea trialled. They would obviously require large amounts of fuel from jerry cans.

    Passwords for tents

Or alternatively, have strongboxes and safes. They can only be opened with the correct key or password/combination. They can be cut open with tools or blown open with explosives but this would risk destroying some/all of the items inside. They could be carried around but would take up a huge amount of inventory space. It would allow people a secure way to guard their items but at the same time having a risk that people would break in and steal the contents. A locker might only come with 2 keys so if you lose them, you're buggered.

What Day Z really needs: Bicycles

    Yes, bicycles! That is all.

Looking for ex & current military

I'm looking at starting up a group for players who are ex or current military. Will be based Euro/UK at first but will be open to US/Aus/NZ/Can depending on amount of interest. Hopefully we can get a few people together for some coordinated zombie killing/airfield raiding etc.

DayZ has become Deathmatch / Team Deathmatch

Why do people get so worked up over PvP? I have died many, many times in this game and will probably die many more. It's part of the enjoyment of the game. The fact that you could potentially be shot down at any time is what makes it so much fun.

DayZ has become Deathmatch / Team Deathmatch

I murdered another player today for the first time in weeks. The reason was: I had no food and little water left. He asked if I was friendly and, at first, I was. I considered trying to trade but I could see he had better equipment than I did and it was much easier to simply wait till he turned his back and shoot him. Do I feel guilty or bad? Not really - it's a survival game. It's been said that civilization is "nine meals from anarchy". Now imagine that the world you live in has not only crashed and burned but has also become infested with zombies. I believe the majority of people would become very trigger happy to ensure their continued survival. Trust and empathy would become rare and ill-afforded commodities. The only person you could completely trust is yourself. Friends and family might be trustworthy but I imagine there's people out there who would sell their grandmothers for a can of beans.

Looking for ex & current military

Just had a look at that military gamers website, it looks like it's only open to US military. I'll set up a group on steam and see what kind of interest we get. Group is up: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/DayZMil

    Thoughts on Bandages

Plus needle decompression, bolan chest seals, BVMs, OPAs, NPAs, LMAs... god, the acronyms are endless. Why not urinary catheters as well? (You haven't just come back from the field have you? It would be hilarious if you were one of the RAMC medics who were out with us this last week.)

    Thoughts on Bandages

By the same argument, how would a survivor know how to use rifles, shotguns, pistols etc? How would they know how to fly a helicopter? How would they know how to repair a car? Personally I like to think that the survivors in DayZ are not your average civilian. They are the people who have survived the apocalypse due to their life experiences, training, skills and luck. Most likely they are ex or current military, police, hunter or other person with a similar skill set. As for medical knowledge - most people I know have done, at the very least, some kind of basic first aid course.

    Thoughts on Bandages

Why complicate things? The system works fine as it is. As for not being able to treat yourself: I know I can personally administer many treatments to myself IRL such as inserting IVs, applying CAT tourniquets, cleaning and dressing wounds etc. It takes practice but many things can be done one handed. IVs certainly can be tricky though. Shout out to my main medic man Melbo - "Semper Agens, Semper Quietus"

    Thoughts on Bandages

Military medic here. Using dressings, bandages, hemostatic agents and tourniquets most bleeding can be stopped. If we are talking about realism then the vast majority of gunshot wounds would be fatal (unless the round causes a minor wound without compromising any underlying structures such as bones, tendons, major blood vessels etc). Even simple injuries would require suturing which is a bit more difficult than resewing a button. Anything that involves the internal organs requires surgery and as this isn't available in a post apocalyptic world it comes down to this: if you get shot, you die. Personally I think the current system works well, it's not terribly realistic but for the sake of gameplay it does what it needs to.

    River crossings

Well, this is a bit of knee-jerk suggestion to the server resetting my location to Otmel Island (I was many miles north of this when I had logged out). I was forced to swim for the mainland and lost 90% of my kit - weapon, pack etc. Personally I believe that losing kit when swimming isn't terribly realistic. The military have ways of crossing rivers that work even when carrying large amounts of weight (basically just using the drybag liner in your pack to keep it afloat). It's probably not high on the priority list but what do people think about losing equipment when swimming?
  18. alex.vague@gmail.com

    River crossings

Umm, not to be contrary but it isn't hard as long as the water isn't moving quickly. The pack itself floats if you have a drybag liner side. You can also wrap the pack in a poncho to provide an extra layer of waterproofing if you need. (Source: I've done a 30m water crossing during my time in the military.) But yeah, spawning on islands off the mainland is a pain in the ass! :D

    Solutions to 1.5.7 gripes.

Just a point for realism - the Enfield fires a .303 round which is larger than the 5.56x45 fired by NATO weapons like the M4/M16. This photo here: http://mygreenhell.typepad.com/photos/odds_and_ends/nov8_016.html shows the difference between rounds - note the size of the 7.62x39 (fired by the AKM/AK47) and the .223 (aka 5.56mm) to the .303 British.
