    How do you play?

    Yes, you CAN. But I'm sure that you will find that 99.9% of players use keyboard and mouse. If you prefer it, then use it. But I am sure most people use what's common.

    Some questions about vehicles

    From what I've read, the servers have to be restarted every six hours or so. I haven't seen many vehicles, either. I'm always amazed at all of this vehicle talk, but for me, I prefer for them to be rare. I saw one flying helicopter once, and a repairable bus last night. One time, I saw a tire. I can only assume that the intention is to make vehicles more of a group effort.... L

    Lab coat à là mad scientist... Bunny suit Starbucks coffee shop (there would be so many....) In relative seriousness, I'm sure that memory is saved by using fewer skins... But it's unsettling and downright confusing when around more than one or two other players, especially if name tags are turned off! Sometimes it looks like clone wars. L
  4. No screenshots, no video... A hand typed "chat log". This is a "he said - he said" situation. All of these (possibly made up) shenanigans... Guys... The dev team of people trying to make a great game has limited time. This is time they now have to spend on this junk. I'm so glad that I am not one of these mysteriously epic players that wipes out clans or flies helicopters or whatever.... So mich of a PITA. Shouldnt this kind of thing be done in some fashion behind closed doors? It's just so possibly spurious. L

    what is waiting on server response? ??

    Yesterday I played all day. When I tried to reconnect after about 2 pacific, I could not. I went and did someone else.. This morning, I had fine luck, then not so much for a while, then my gf and I got in a good couple of hours. I recommend deciding to try for an hour or so, then finding something else to do if it gets frustrating. I let each try last about 10 minutes or so. If it doesn't work, I fully disconnect and try a different server. Yes, sometimes it happens quickly, and sometimes.... Never.. I believe it is the central server issue. Its missing it's query and leaving each Ayer dumped, not knowing that they are unable to connect. So you try, and 3 minutes in, the attempt fails.... But you see nothiing change... IF you spawn, debug forest, most likely. L

I'm considering making a document with this information, so I can cut and paste it.. This is, to my anecdotal knowledge how the system works: You decide to try to connect to Ny1. You start on the server and some bits download. At some point, that NY1 tries to connect to a central character repository server. This central repository server (not ny1) is the server that has your last know location as well as your equipment information on it. When tons of people try to connect, and especially when they are spamming reconnects, it's like having everyone in one line. Only if you disconnect without the server timing out, you leave sort of a phantom place in line. Thus, people disconnecting and reconnecting, and busy time result in a longer and longer and longer line.

    Do not password your servers

    First of all, I think it's GREAT that you help out the community and host servers. Wow, you do more than I ever could. However...... That was tough. Its the first thread on this section of the forums. It's right in there, Under Importqnt Threads. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=1429 I've had a lot of requests in regards to getting a server up and what kind of requirements are needed to run a DayZ server. So I thought I'd put together a small guide as to how to go about it. First of all, a DayZ server requires Remote Desktop Access and Windows (Unfortunately Linux isn't supported as of yet). This rules out server providers such as Gameservers which only provide you with a Web Interface and FTP. Second, your server needs to be able to handle Terra-bytes of bandwidth monthly. Some servers are chewing through 2TB of bandwidth a month. So be mindful of that. Thirdly, the specifications. Below is a rough list of requirements to have a comfortable 50 player server. * Quad Core CPU @ 3Ghz+ (CPU is the main enforcer in a ArmA server, so the more powerful the better) * 2GB+ Ram (Ram isn't a big issue in an ArmA server, so don't be overly concerned with having copious amounts [16GB+] of it as it won't be required) * 50GB+ HDD (Preferably SATA3 or SSD) (ArmA 2 CO and the DayZ Mod take up approx. 20GB) * Bandwidth at least 2TB a month. (As stated earlier, at least 2TB is required) Finally, if you think you have what it takes, then we're more than happy to get your server running as soon as possible. First point of call is to email; dayzdevteam@gmail.com - If you haven't received a response from that email after a day or so, then feel free to email me; dayzmatt@gmail.com I'll try and get to you. I'll be unable to provide the best 'Server Providers' to approach to get a good server, I leave that up to you. Just look through different providers, compare prices and specifications and ensure they match what a DayZ server requires. UPDATE 14-MAY-2012 For any server admins who have been hesitant to give RDP information to us, then don't be afraid, we are opening the doors for everyone to setup their own DayZ servers! (Server admins who give Devs RDP will have priority in regards to new files, updates, restarts etc) However... In order to operate, you must first speak with a server administrator, such as myself, and we must issue you a Instance number. Every different server (even 2 on the same box) require it's own instance number, or mission ID number. At the moment, we're up to 130+. So if you would like to run your own server, then please let me know, or easier, email dayzdevteam@gmail.com, and I, or another server admin, will hand out the required readme and instance mission file for you to operate, run and maintain you're own server. BEWARE - The same restrictions apply to Non-Dev run servers! - IT MAY NEVER BE PASSWORDED - NO EXCESS KEYS OR MODS - NO KICKING TO MAKE ROOM FOR 'FRIENDS' OR CLANMATES - IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO UPDATE YOUR SERVER TO THE LATEST VERSION OF DAYZ Failure to adhere to these rules will BAN YOUR SERVER'S IP from DayZ.   9. I guess what would be like super keen is if the ga e allows for custom appearances ad hoc. I'm guessing that it's really full model skins, so you could find a whole "outfit" that would essentially change the appearance of your model. Having the ability to mix and match shirts and jackets and pants or hats/helmets would probably be impractical, straining on the database and really downright impossible. Still, I can imagine something like... Wearing articulate colours to try to blend in... Attempting camouflage with scrounged assets. Organized groups could start to have uniforms and maybe even logos or what have you... Skins will be cool, though. L
  10. I thought it would be helpful being able to identify bandits by skin, but it really doesn't. The one time I was able to exact revenge was when I saw a bandit kill someone and start looting. As I ran up to do him in, three zombies came around the opposite corner. He shot them up and I shot down everything else left standing. I would have killed that bandit (if I could!) skin or not. It was obvious that he was a killer by his actions. Since people can shoot someone once in a while then up their humanity again, as many have said, everyone is a threat and anyone is a target.     Ruining ARMA 2?

    Some of you are case in point. Calling people stupid, and saying stfu.... Weak. I think that this mod is, in a word, spectacular for Arma. As has been I'd, this is a proof of concept and certainly puts the mod community out there, and gets the interest of des of full games, showing them that moddabliity gives a game legs. The sales of the base game are, os we all know, through the roof, so you can bet that Bi is grinning as they work on Arma III. L

    Kudos on thinking it out, but yeah... Maybe in another game. I wouldn't want to see that in this game. Honestly, despite all my fire-of-burning-sun hatred or PKers, I think that should be left. I like the quasi-realistic, non-balanced nature of the game. You get what you find and survive the best you can. L

    Simple solution to disconnect exploit

    Block logout while flagged for combat. Disconnect during combat = penalty. MAYBE not death In case of power outages or whatever. But why not. As they ke to say in the other direction, it's a brutal game.

    Changes to the crossbow?

    1. Bolt case so they can stack, and so that you can find more than one at a time, and so that they don't take up all of your slots. 2... Better ones DO have scopes, do they not?
  19. A private server by any other name... There is no material difference between an 'invite by GUID only' and a private clan server.
  20. This is collectively referred to as the "debug forest". Essentially, your attempts to connect and have your character info sent from the central character server to the server where you are playing has failed. Abort and try again.

    Long time to connect

    Not to offend, but this is an extremely well known issue. It is being looked at, worked on, whatever you want to call it. Essentially, it's time to remember that it's an alpha/proof of concept that got reviewed on some sites and now has exploded beyond expectations in popularity. I know how you feel, though. I play with my fianceé, but it's more like "try to play". We can barely get together to do anything what with the connect issues, PKers, zombies, of course, servers with pitch black dark, server crashes, &c. &c. Patience.
  22. Yeeeeeah, no. At least, it goes against the vision as I interpret it for the game. I think if private servers are implemented, or something like this is done, then it should be something that's cut off from the database that syncs everything. People will just manipulate their 'private' server to get great stuff, then connect to a normal server and mow everyone down with their sniper rifles, machine guns and helicopters. Heck, even with all of the restrictions, I think some of this is creeping in! L

    I did this. Set up two accounts on your computer (presumably you already have one). I have Steam. So I set up steam on the second account with a new steam name. So essentially, you have two, separate steam/user account combinations. I then bought a second copy, so I have two sets of cd keys. When I'm playing solo, I use one account. With friends, the other. L
