I have a question. Yes, it's an alpha. Aside from item count.... What has improved in the SA over the mod a year ago? Let a random gamer play the mod for ten hours and the sa for ten. Which do you think the person would want to play for ten more hours. A hardcore audience has attached to this game like desperate leaches. I am kinda one of them, but I vastly prefer the mod and say, epoch or mustyz to the SA. I only play the standalone to check out changes when a new patch comes out.... How long has that been? I hope for the dev teams the next patch is a spectacular windfall and moves the game ahead because right now it's developing like a bull shuffling listlessly in a china shop.

Your observations about the engine and the similarity in particular between the mod and standalone dayz (I believe they are really the same thing with a few different code blocks for the reason you enumerate), will be met by derision here because these are the true believers. But they are right. It's better to go if you feel this way.

Can a Macbook pro run on Dayz Standalone?
Disgraced replied to Bernie_101's topic in General Discussion
I did respond about the Mac and then the Pedant Squad jumped in to prove who has the bigger tech dick. I won't comment any further as only a "yes it will work great" is acceptable to some. Opinion still intact but no need to express it here. (Also... Yes I prefer at least a modicum of reasonable language in internet posts, but to disassemble to that level is just stupid). Good day. -
Can a Macbook pro run on Dayz Standalone?
Disgraced replied to Bernie_101's topic in General Discussion
There are five gaming computers in the house. The youngest has the lowest quality and it is lower than what was posited in this thread..I also deal with machines as part of my job and I've been working with all versions of windows since 4.11. I also own a Mac and have used boot camp, sooooooo. Yeah there's that. Sure, the guy might be able to run the game but will it really be reasonably playable? I still doubt it. Oops wrong button..... Your best bet is to come back in a few months. There will not be daily huge improvements, sorry. Gotta be realistic. -
Can a Macbook pro run on Dayz Standalone?
Disgraced replied to Bernie_101's topic in General Discussion
Unfortunately, when the game is running, the OS and other items also need to run. 8GB of ram is just not enough for modern gaming. I understand that dayz does not use all of the 8gb, and I understand that a 32 bit OS will only allow memory addresses for about 3.7GB of ram. To me, the fact stands that these specs are not good enough to have a satisfactory experience playing a modern game. That includes that I believe that 16gb on a 64 bit OS is pretty much bare bones a this point. -

Sure. Which OS will he run? I suppose if he's using a 32 bit OS... But I guarantee a bad performance experience. -

I'd say you have three intrinsic problems: Processor speed is too slow RAM is WAY too small Your graphics card will guaranteed not be up to it. Sorry. -
Sure make the game as difficult as possible. But there has to be an authenticity and an adherence to rule set. Players have to feel like they have some chance even if there is some luck in the mix. Getting hit by zombies that are clearly too far away from the player or killed by stairs break that authenticity. I really think that zombies should have random run speeds so that you have to worry if one will be faster than you. There should be a whole underlying analysis that you can do. Maybe some zombies are deaf, some blind. Some with one arm that can't hurt you as much.. Maybe you can distract them with loud noises elsewhere like a smoke detector or radio or running car engine. Right now the modification of the arma engine is basically what we had in the mod and the combat system is clunky as hell. Here's hoping it improves!

Sounds like it was a dumb idea.... -

Apparently I was "speed gun hacking" ( me vs 3 fight) Video

The game gets all kinds of weird with multiple players in proximity kinda like oh, I dunno... the mod.... It probably did sound or look weird on his side. But nothing you can do. -
Hmmm, somehow yes I did!

Yes.. A burning bush or talking bird told me. I don't remember which. It will be on sale for $19.99. Save your Canadian Tire money as, in a bold move, that is the only currency they will take.

An impossible kill, where was he? Hacks or Exploiter?

I find it laughable that people present this stuff like its a fucking Sasquatch sighting. There are hackers. Embrace the truth and heal your soul. -
I'll cautiously third...

Anyone think the hunting/cooking patch might ACTUALLY come out today?
Disgraced replied to Slyguy65's topic in General Discussion
1. It hasnt been announced 2. It's not PATCH DAY, it's SERVER MAINTENANCE DAY. Gotta keep up with these rudimentary details. Oh. No. Reiterating, it was a huge mistake in a way for them to do this Alpha thing. Entitlement and armchair quarter-programming abound. -

Suggested previously. Your unique snowflake status is revoked. If you posted this in suggestions I wouldn't have commented. -
I am thinking the same thing... Having such an open development cycle leaves a lot of room for speculation. I would say that the hive setup and all of the communication necessary severely limits number of objects and so they are trying to mitigate that. So everything is turned off for respawn or performance goes into the shitter and the hive chokes. The backend is not efficient and no one knows what to do about it.... or they know WHAT to do but not HOW (I sure wouldn't). Working in a couple different venues with software developers, writing code is easy. Making it the BEST code is really hard. A lot of time, people write what seems to work and then rely on testing to find the problems. This is because proper testing and tools are hugely time consuming and sometimes expensive. Hell, sometimes, you are trying something that there are no tools for. MMOs allow for tons of connected players, but they use other tricks to limit what players see and experience. In the mod, a lot of stuff only spawned if a player hit a certain radius (hence, sometimes you'd be moving toward a location and your screen would stutter and then the zeds would appear). They are trying for a great deal of persistence and a LOT of objects. I think... that if it was me, I would make spawn objects. Like junk or trash piles or car wrecks, refrigerators, suitcases, that kind of thing. You search the object and get random loot. Fewer objects and items are spawned when the character tries to find one. Not the greatest solution, but do you really need to see every can of beans at 400 yards through your sniper scope?

The dev team seems to have a lot of trouble understanding how to you know, program. Are they guessing an all of this stuff?? When I have a hard time doing something it's because I don't understand the tools or material. I thought this was a professional dev house? Kind of odd. I think that it's awfully hard to develop with this much public exposure... But that's what they chose to do. I have a feeling that with the slow dev cycle and stretched out goals, people will move on long before this is a playable game. It's only worth dabbling in at the moment. I hope they get it on track.

I didn't think much of it... and then I got an 'article' on my Zite Dayz feed... advertising hacking... So yeah. It's almost not worth repeating any more... OF COURSE it's just like the mod... It's barely NOT the mod. I would guess that it's only a small percentage difference between the mod and the stand alone. ..... Like human and banana DNA.

Standalone Discussion/Critique from an Old DayZ Fan.
Disgraced replied to TOPMO3's topic in General Discussion
This is a great analysis of the game as it is now. I hope it changes significantly. I hope the devs are working to figure out how to make the game work better at it's core and how to make it more brutal and difficult to survive. I remember, too, the posts where we would joke about people's tears because the game was hard. It needs to be that. Something that is intensely difficult and stress-inducing... but also with a polished engine that looks a good and runs authentically. Tough to do, though.Right now, as you analyzed, it's more of an elaborate tech demo, imho. -
When the infection came, the lycanthropes flew up there and then piloted it out of this solar system. The moon is often mistaken for a space station. That's no space station, that's a moon.
