Problem with direct chat/voice

[Problem with direct chat/voice]

So I was on US 183 with a small group last night/early this morning and we were approaching a barn. One of the group members noticed a dead walker on the floor, and about 70 meters away were a few more dead zombies. We heard walking from one of the upstairs areas of the barn, the sound of someone drinking a soda, and someone reloading. When we tried to make contact to find out of there was someone in there, neither direct chat or voice worked. (the group i was with couldn't hear each other over direct voice or read any messages in direct chat) so my question is, what happened there?

Im 29, beginner/intermediate experience with Day Z and arma, looking for a group/team to run with a few nights a week, im in chicago so im GMT - 6 if thats not a problem

Fairly new to the game, so still learning the controls and that (dont put me behind the wheel of a car or a chopper, it will crash).
