I find the twilight zone feeling of the A2 mod really creepy and a breath of fresh air from the traditional decayed/overgrown environment. We don't know how much time has passed sinse the catastrophic event, maybe just weeks.

I actually think BI would benefit from releasing the code under a Free License and concentrate on art and terrain assets - something they are really good at. Keeping the assets under copyright would still slow them charging full price for the games while benefiting from community work on the code.

People trust billions of dollars doing e-commerce with Open Source Apache web server and Open Source Firefox web-client browser, Free Software != Insecure. Signing the binaries allows to immediately differentiate between code coming from an official repository (with only few trusted people allowing to approve commits) and unofficial binaries.

Rocket said today that he wouldn't even consider a release date until is is satisfied with performance and stability. That kinda implies it's not upto alpha standards yet.

It was already "client-server" based, the only difference between an "MMO" and regular multi is character persistence.

C) maybe likely, this is kinda typical server admin behavior from the early days - close the server after restart and loot it with your buddies/clanmates. Just imagine how powerful the testers will be when it eventually releases!

I agree, MP performance in the A2 Mod was quite acceptable for an Alpha, what could they have possibly done to ruin it so badly? Is it server-generated zombies, the object-orientation system?

It'd be nice to have an authentic post-soviet town of about 50K people in game. You only need to make blocks of 2 kind of residential building model really.
