It's best not to ask for logical explanations for seemingly illogical choices made by the Dev Team, the locals will get restless and attempt to burn you at the stake. I questioned Dean about it before, because I was very disappointed at the choice to use DX9 for lighting. Dean told me that DX11 could have been implemented if they'd spent an extra year and a half or so in development time. Logic... don't expect it around these parts, Pilgrim.

There are several ways to get your bearings. If you know what time it is on the server, you can tell your bearing by the sun (It's in the west in the morning, and the east in the evening). You can also navigate by the stars if you teach yourself how to find North. You're right that there's a map, but it's in several pieces, and you have to find them. Hope this helps.

The mechanics defeat you before you begin. Without either a kill feed or a body checker you have no way of knowing who the corpse on the floor is.
