Alternative download site for 1.6? Very slow.
Luieburger replied to Jamrock990's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Download it through the torrent: DayZ-1.6.0.1.torrent http://cdn.armafiles.info/ It will take 5 minutes tops. I'm seeding right now, so you are free to have all 1MB/s of my upload capabilities. -
This game is well known for being unforgiving, and in many ways that's part of what makes it fun. Zombies 1.5.7 added a lot more zombies. 1.5.8 nerfed them in several ways, but some good ways. They move much more fluidly now so they don't jump all over the place and zig zag everywhere. That's a good thing, but it seems like they are too easy now. Here's what I propose. Kiting zombies for miles isn't exactly fun. Slow the zombie runners down a bit so you can lose them and add maybe a 1%-2% of zombies that can catch you and hit you at jogging speed (but not sprinting speed). Sprinting to safety should be a viable escape tactic, but gathering up zombies and running for miles to a building or a dock or some other place where you can easily stop and head shot them is not fun. It gets boring fast. Which brings me to my next point. Let zombies run inside buildings. I'm sure this is in plan. Slowing zombies in buildings was probably implemented to prevent zombies from quickly jumping you through walls. I'm looking forward to using choke points and high places as defense rather than just a warehouse or a dock. Balance all of this out by making zombies eventually give up chasing you, or give up once you're on top of a building without making noise for 5 minutes, and we have something that's less forgiving, more fun, and not so hard that it just wipes everybody out. Tents Tents are a cool idea, and of course they are buggy right now while they're developing. Why aren't they packable by every player? It's possible that they don't want players to go around packing tents just to delete the loot in them that they can't carry. It's also possible that they don't want 1000 posts on the forum saying "the sever deleted my tent." Maybe when a tent is taken it leaves a small bag on the ground with the remaining contents that can be looted for 30 days before de-spawning. This fixes the problem of dead players having to re-deploy a new tent just so the stuff in their tent doesn't de-spawn after 2 days and also allows people to steal each other's tents. As it stands right now, I use 2 or 3 neighboring tents near my camp to store stuff because my current tent is full. Of course, who knows when those will de-spawn. Vehicles We need more fixable vehicles, and fewer parts. As of right now it's just dumb luck if you find a vehicle. By the time you find it you already have (if you're a pack rat like me) enough stuff to fix 3 cars and a chopper. In a real zombie apocalypse, parts would be the limiting factor. Not the vehicles themselves. This would make the game more fun because parts would be more valuable, and something worth fighting over. We'd probably find more half-fixed vehicles on the map as well, which would lead to more vehicle fixing battles and more player interaction/strategy/team building. Ammo Right now, half-used magazines are full upon login. Just disconnect and reconnect to re-fill your ammo. I expect that this will be fixed eventually, but there is a fine balance between having too much ammo and so little ammo that your firearms are worthless. I'm sure we can find a happy medium somewhere. Starting gear This has been stated in another thread, but players should start with nothing more than a flashlight and a stick for a melee weapon. The discussion about this is here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6718 Tube magazines Firearms with tube magazines should load one at a time. The Winchester is still overpowered since it takes 2 seconds to load 15 rounds. The other shotguns should be the same. The benefit of firearms with tube magazines is that you can stop right in the middle of a reload and fire. You can't do that with a firearm that has a detachable magazine. See my other post for more on firearms: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6924

How can we make DayZ more unforgiving/brutal/fun?
Luieburger replied to Luieburger's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I like it! I've been thinking the same thing. Direct comm should be all you get. Of course people will have teamspeak/vent either way, but within the game sphere it should be very limited. -
UPDATE 5/25/2012 They disputed the fair use claim, so I went ahead and edited out the first 60 seconds of the video. The video is actually better this way. It removes 60 seconds of ATV repair, which is somewhat boring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK4mKJJdBDw I also sent and e-mail to Orchard telling them that the video no longer contains copyrighted materials. Original post So I posted a Fraps recording of this game to YouTube and now "The Orchard Music" claims that I've infringed copyrights because this song is playing in the background. Pretty cool huh? I never knew where they section of music came from. How did Rocket and the DayZ mod folks get around the copyright issue with this music? Did they get permission to use it in the game? Do they not care because they are in the Czech Republic and they can't be touched? I remember that earlier there were some Valve zombie sounds in the game. They were taken out in the 1.5.7 patch I believe and replaced with some good stuff, but were there any copyright issues there? Anyway... this copyright claim from YouTube/The Orchad Music gave me the opportunity to study up on fair use. They're fine with letting me keep the video up as long as I acknowledge that this is their content and they can put adverts on my video, but I don't like being pushed around so I want to claim fair use. I know the last place I want to get legal advice is on a forum on the internet, but I want your opinions. Also, I'm curious about how copyright law affects the mod and its developers since they apparently borrowed a lot of stuff.

Able to loot items and eat food while "dead" on the ground with -31k blood.
Luieburger posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Date/Time: 5/26/2012 8:30AM PST What happened: Killed a bandit, started bleeding, then his friend finished me off. I had -31k blood, but for some reason I was still able to loot objects, eat food, and use painkillers. I was not able to use morphine or bandages though, even though right clicking them gave me the option. Eventually, I was even able to get up some how and shoot the 2nd bandit who killed me. A total BS kill I know, but he deserved it. ;) Please see the video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LQlXMplAlE Where you were: In Elektro in the apartments across the street from the store. What you were doing: Hunting bandits, killing bandits, and eventually dying. I don't have footage of my actual death. *Current installed version: 1.5.8.4 *Server(s) you were on: Seattle (Anti-Sardine Alliance) *Your system specs: i5 3.1ghz, 8 gigs of memory, Radeon 5830 *Timeline of events before/after error: -Ran into the apartments. -Spotted a bandit. -Ran into another room. -Killed the first bandit while bleeding. -Died to the 2nd bandit. -Looted a bunch of items and ate food/used pain killers -Stood up and killed the 2nd bandit despite having -31k blood. -

1.5.8.4 The first action you take on a server is stuck with you
Luieburger posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Date/Time: 5/23/2012 5:46PM PST What happened: I removed a barbwire fence and then tried to gut a cow. Sadly, the only option I had on my action menu (other than gear and the other general options) was to remove cat 5. I tried it away from the cow and had the same option. My wife on her computer next to me saved a tent and later found that she only had the save tent option when she tried to do another action. Where you were: Me: NE Airfield - Dallas 5 My wife: NE Airfield - Seattle (Anti-Sardine Alliance) What you were doing: Trying to take any action *Current installed version: 1.5.8.4 on both machines *Server(s) you were on: (Stated above) *Your system specs: Me: Win7 64bit i5 Ivy Bridge 3.1ghz 8gigs of memory Radeon 5830 My wife: Same as above except with a 550TI. *Timeline of events before/after error: Before: Take some action. In this case, saving a tent or removing barbed wire. After: Couldn't do anything but the first action taken on the server. Here's a video of the bug. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5VhCzN3rFA -
Odd deaths, logging in incapacitated. (With appropriate details)
Luieburger posted a topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Date/Time: 5/14/2012 What happened: I found a body at the top of a lighthouse. Looted it. Then selected "hide body" and climbed down the ladder. Somehow, the body bugged out and slammed into me and I got incapped, and needed to take pain pills and use a bandage. Then I couldn't hear anything. I'm not sure if that's a bug, or if it's a game feature making me deaf when I get beat up. Either way, logging out and logging back in fixes the sound, so I did that. But when I logged in I was incapped on an extremely long hourglass timer. Even though I had logged out fully bandaged and standing up just fine. And when the hourglass expired, I couldn't get up. Thankfully I had recently died, so I didn't have anything important. I had to respawn to get started again. Where you were: Some lighthouse near a very rocky coast. Not sure exactly where. What you were doing: Dragging a dead body while climbing down a ladder. *Current installed version: 1.5.7 *Server(s) you were on: Not Sure. Hardcore mode *Your system specs: i5 3.1ghz Intel. 8GB Ram. ATI 5830 *Timeline of events before/after error: Climb ladder Loot Body Drag Boddy (without releasing) Climb down ladder Walk through door and get incapped Get up, bandage, pain pills log out due to sound not working log back in incapped respawn -
BIS are giving away copies of Arma X

Jesus Christ! http://www.steamcalculator.com/id/capnpantz My account is "worth" $1257.99 USD? Funny stuff. Of course it's probably depreciated down to like $200, and I definitely didn't pay that much for all of those games. ;) I only have 31 points (for whatever reason). They seem to be increasing pretty fast. -
Do most people just turn up Gamma during night?
Luieburger replied to Jamrock990's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
My gamma goes back and forth between 1.0 and 1.2. Anything higher than that gets way to grainy. It doesn't seem to help me much. -
DayZ player survey | Final results!|868 participants!
Luieburger replied to eel's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Interesting results. Good stuff! -
I would like to see skills and attributes (very limited as not to give old players a complete advantage over new players), but not rigid classes. Your class is up to you, your play style, the weapon you choose, and the gear you carry.
-
Try to keep the game free form, but yes. Permit people to fix up buildings or build structures. I expect that will come into the game at some point.

Spawn survivors with only a flashlight
Luieburger replied to wolfmat's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Flashlight and a stick. If you want to steal somebody's stuff you'll have to club them for it... for their stick and their flashlight. -
Great idea. I like it.

Ammunition and firearms. How complex do we want to get? This game already does a stellar job by having a variety of firearms, calibers, and information about calibers etc. Yet there is a lot more that could be done without making the game cumbersome and super-realistic. Some of these items might already be in plan, but I'll just state them here anyway. -Treat magazines like water bottles and jerry cans. They hold ammo and can be easily refilled during downtime after combat with a single (refill mags) button. -Give players an ammo box that holds a certain amount of ammo. They can fill it up by emptying mags that they find on players, taking ammo from players' ammo boxes, or looting boxes of ammo around the map. -Several ammo calibers can fit in different mags. If I find an M249 belt/can, I should be able to move some/all of that ammo into my STANAG magazine. The same goes for Glock mags, M9 mags, and any other 9mm mags. -Allow players to apply different holsters and slings to their firearms. A 1-point or 3-point sling should allow a player to switch between their rifle and their sidearm more quickly. -Allow players to carry more than one long-arm, at a price. How does anyone fit a rifle inside of a backpack anyway? Long arms should be unable to fit in a backpack, and instead should fit on players' backs as long as your primary long-arm is in your hands. The down side is that you have to drop your primary long-arm on the ground if you want to switch to your pistol (unless you have a 1-point or 3-point sling). You can switch to the secondary long-arm if you want, but the same rules apply as switching to your pistol. Carrying a secondary rifle should slow your jog down at least enough that runner zombies can catch you. -Allow players to carry dual pistols if they have the proper holsters. Accuracy should go way down, and reloading should take longer. All of the fools who want to look cool with dual pistols would have to pay for the privilege. (Heck... I'd do it) This isn't Counter Strike. -Firearms with tube magazines should load like it. The Winchester should load one round at a time (it also shouldn't fire slugs, it should fire .44-40 Winchester rounds, but I think they're working on that since they eliminated Winchester pellet rounds). Additionally, Winchester ammo and Shotgun ammo should be a pile of ammo rather than be treated like a magazine. Reloading could possibly be made faster with a bandoleer item or shotgun ammo pouch, but that would eventually need to be re-filled to benefit from the reloading increase. -If you reload your firearm before the last round is fired, there should still be one round in the chamber. When you load a full fresh mag on top of that, you'll have the magazine capacity + 1. I could go on and on, but I'll leave it at that for now. Here's hoping that they implement one or more of these ideas. I know it's not a priority right now, but keep it in mind for the future. tl;dr Make ammo and firearms behave more like they do IRL, but not so much that it's annoying to deal with. PS: Add the Sig P226, 33 round Glock mags, more Glock variants. Variety is the spice of life. :D

I like it! My only question is... what happens if the handcuffed player logs out? I'm sure it could be handled some way.

Implement a currency item such as gold coins.
Luieburger replied to Horr1d's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Coins or no coins, we either need a better (faster) system for picking things up and putting them down, or a player trade window system. I'd vote for never using a trade window system and having an improved item management system. In this game, you can shoot whoever doesn't hold up their end of the bargain, so why bother with a trade window? -
I like your thinking. Force players to learn the difference, or find information about it in a library. Libraries would probably be pretty hot places if a zombie apocalypse happened.
-
In some previous patches you could drag bodies, but it was buggy so I never used it. I didn't notice that it was gone. Did they take it out?
-
I didn't like/believe the episode in The Walking Dead where they covered themselves in zombie guts to prevent detection. I thought it was silly. So I disagree. However, your suggestion is valid.
