Basically you have two different kinds of servers in this game. Decent ones and ones hosted on a 486 DX in someone's bedroom. :D Unfortunately its hard to tell which is which. A good but not foolproof indicator is who the servers is sponsored by if its a company, such as PCGamer in the UK it's probably a decent server that will load quickly. If it's hosted by L33t $Ki11S or some other player name, its probably going to be slow. These are not hard and fast rules as some player hosted servers are really good and the hosters have spent a lot of money providing a decent service to the community fro free. Unfortunately they are not all like that. :( Also eve the best server will take an age to log you in after it's just been restarted and everyone is trying to get back in. Also Also, at busy times the Hive (The Servers run by Rocket the mod developer, where your Character data is stored) can be under heavy stress and may take longer to provide the server you are connecting with, with you character data and this can increase your load times a lot! Basically this is an Alpha, sometimes you will log in quickly, sometime it can take 10 minuets or more and all of the above will factor into how long it takes. :P

This is not true. I wandered off the map yesterday and lost connection to the server. I reconnected and I was in the same position.

Of cause finding which way is south might be a problem. :D

I just want to say a big thanks to the guys on UK666 we fought last night at Balota Airfield. If you guys are reading this I want to pay my respects to you for not alt F4ing and eventually beating us back and winning the control tower back. In all my time of playing this game last night is the most exciting time I and my clan have ever spent. Proper tactics on both side no cheating and a nerve racking fight to the death. At one stage we were down to one guy in the control tower holding out waiting for reinforcements with the enemy still outside unsure of how many of us were left. My personal highlight of the evening was sprinting from Balota training 20 Zs and managing to get up the control tower ladder and in to loot my mates body of a gun before taking out the guy in the filed who had killed me. I know people bitch about PVP in this game but man it was a lot of fun last night. Props to our opponents who managed to take us all out as we were leaving and guarded our bodies so well we just couldn't get back to them. Well done guys. :D

I was discussing in another thread if the success of this game is tied to the age of the people who play it. If the demographic of the player base is skewed towards the older gamers who came from the old school of gaming where you had a steeper learning curve and more in depth game play, where in fact things were not just handed to you on a plate like so many modern games do. So I thought I'd see if there was a link between how much you love the game and how old you are. Is the game really hated by the 12 to 16 year old COD players and loved by us crusty old Duke Nukem 3d players. So how old are you guys.

My group had a hallelujah moment last night. We've not seen a vehicle in weeks and then running through the woods last night sitting in a stream of sunlight was a pickup. :D It was just next to a Deer Stand in plain view of the road and our first thought was TRAP!. Took us about half an hour to circle round the site checking ambush positions and sight lines. We couldn't see anyone near. So summoning up my courage I crawled to the pickup and got in. The dam thing was at full health and had half a tank of fuel. I brace myself for the bullet but it never came. Who ever had driven it there was long gone. Maybe a Zombie got him or another player, what ever had happened we toasted his health with a can of beans :beans: and drove our new toy back to our camp, singing all the way. :D

To be fare those options were added later so they aren't going to add up unfortunately. My bad I'm afraid :(

Its interesting to see that so far its almost exactly a 50/50 split between those over and those under 25. Now of cause this very basic poll doesn't take into account any other factors like the type of games people enjoy, if they like more casual games or hard core shooters but it does look from this small statistical sample that those who play and love Day Z come from all ages. This is very interesting as I honestly thought that there would have been more older players. A stupid assumption on my part as I should know you shouldn't judge people by age. Keep the votes coming, The more data the more accurate the poll will be. Not sure if Rocket will fins this useful. I'm sure he data mines the forum and can see the ages of people who joined but I'm guessing he can't see who is still playing.

Fixed sorry about that I'm getting used to how the polls work on this forum. There is now a not applicable option for those not in the groups. Thanks for spotting the problem.

Your right about the ages but if I change them now it will invalidate the results. However I have added two questions just to see how the older and younger sections see themselves.

Excellent Response Yorkie, You have far more patients with the OP than I I'm afraid. I think it's a sad stae of gaming where a lot of gamers expect everything handed to them on a plate, I come form the old school where when you got a game like Baldurs Gate it came with a 400 page manual. I'm wondering if Day Z is a hit more with the older gamer than with younger ones because we older gamers miss that in depth steep learning curve game play that modern games don't support. Hmm I feel a poll coming on.

Yeah it's an exploit, but there is no way to stop ghosting via team speak. What are you gona do. Have the stand alone monitor if the user is using external voice coms and then not let the game run if the player is. Can you imagine the support calls this would cause. "Waaaaa Day Z broke my ventrillo, Waaaa this is spyware, Waaaaa I'm gona sue!" Unfortunately ghosting is a part of multilayer gaming and its not going to go away. At the end of the day you can only make the game so realistic. Its not real life and no amount of coding is ever going to make it truly real. If you want to feel what its like to engage in squad combat without being in the army and putting you life on the line try paint bail or simunition. Its as close as your going to get without risking eating a bullet. :D

Shameless bump as I hope the guys we fought will see it. If not I hope others will see it and know that PVP in Day Z can be a lot of fun and not just getting snipped from 500 meters while running across a field. :D

My group only shoots in self defence, normally people don't even know were are there and we let them pass by. If they attack us first however, they get a short lesson in the folly of "shoot on sight" against a well armed team. ^_^

In Windows 7 the directory you will find the config file is: "C:\Users\YourUserName\Documents\ArmA 2" Look for "ArmA2OA.cfg" aand open it with notepad. Change "AToC=7;" to "AToC=0;" I have no idea what the other switches do ie: AToC settings 1-6... do New patch lets you do it easier.

Its the duping that's crazy at the moment. Not even intentional duping. I'll give you a for instance. Last night I put down a new tent at our camp. I put a load of gear in it including a second range finder I had looted the day before. Anyway saved the tent and 10 mins later the server goes down. Shit I thought I bet the dam tent is gone with all my gear. So I head back to the tens and I now see two new tents. Each with a range finder and all my shit in them. :o Well I don't like the idea of duping so I took down the tent and left the gear to despawn. Well ok I kept the range finder,I know, I know I'm weak. :P But I did leave the other stuff. 10 minutes later the server restarts again. I sigh, go back to the tent and sure enough there is the same dam duped tent again with another pair of range finders in them and again all my high level gear. :rolleyes: I gave up and kept it. :lol:

I like to think of like that bit in most zombie movies where the Zs are punching through the dry wall and grabbing the characters and dragging them away. :D Also it gives me a chance to shout in vent, "The're coming out of the god dam walls!!" :D

A Bandit is a player who kills you and loots your equipment. A Survivor is a player who kills you and loots your equipment and feels bad about it. :D Or A Bandit is a player who kills you when they have equipment that is better than yours. A Survivor is a player who kills you when you have equipment that is better than theirs. :P

Nope it patches Arma, Dayz and Battle Eye Client too now. :D
