I am having this problem as well. Thought it was me. Game opens - one issue I noted was the frame rate and load time seems MUCH lower than just yesterday - but click on Multiplayer and it sticks on Receiving... and the sound cuts off. This happens without using DayZ mod or Beta mod (Arma 2 regular does this). /wait

Highest Settings, better graphics card?
Vexus replied to SLAWTERX's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You know, I have the exact same laptop. It has massive frame lag even at the 1440x resolution. I had 6GB RAM, so no DDR function - I grabbed 8GB RAM to see if it helped. Only a tiny bit. I even went so far as to upgrade my desktop with a smoking video card and SSD - just to find out I was getting huge lag still with DayZ. My desktop I forgot only had 2GB RAM, causing the game to stutter a lot. Doh! So I put in 2GB more and it's smooth except in high polygon areas like big cities. I did a little research just now since I guess I'm not alone on the laptop: http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/alienware/f/3746/p/19308594/19605816.aspx Looks like someone else has had similar issues. Of course, without spending my life trying to resolve the problem and not knowing much different, I didn't try different drivers, but it seems if we put some time into finding the right drivers we might get the performance we expect out of the laptop. I will try it tonight, just thought I'd share since I have the exact same thing going on. -
Last night I was camping the NW airfield from the control tower building. I was waiting there a while before I saw someone cross in front of me. It was dusk and hard to see, and I knew he couldn't see me - he was like 75 meters away not even coming towards me. I opened fire and hit him at least once with 4-5 shots. After the first shot he ran and hid behind a tree. I shot a few more times into the tree trying to hit him but didn't want to waste all my ammo shooting at trees. The guy then started throwing flares towards me trying to flush my position. After the flares died down, I saw him crawl quickly behind another tree, and then behind a truck, and finally behind a building... I just didn't react quick enough to take a shot. My position was pretty good so I just sat there and waited for him to come around the other side. A couple minutes later I see the door close in the tower building. I knew he was there! I scanned the tower windows and every now and then I'd see him climb up another level, obviously looking for me as he stayed prone the entire time. When he got to the top of the tower, he again started to throw flares out the window trying to flush my position. Ah ha! I knew he was going to stay there looking for me, so I logged out. I jumped to a low-pop server which was daylight. I sprinted past zombies into the building and up the staircases to the top floor. I went right for the back corner of the top floor and logged out of that server. I found the original server this guy was in and logged in. I had no idea where he could be or anything, it was so intense! But I knew by hopping servers like this when I logged in I'd have a really good chance of killing him. So finally I spawn - and I'm RIGHT BEHIND HIM! He's prone on the top floor still looking for me, lol. I take a shot and somehow miss even though he was right in front of me. He whipped around and it looked like he was trying to throw something, so maybe he didn't switch back to his weapon because if he had, he would have been able to kill me as my reload took forever. I then shot again, this time killing him. That was intense! The most epic kill ever! this is the perspective of the guy who killed me last night server hopping

This is not a troll post, I guess I should have posted this in stories or something, but looks like some people don't care and can't read black text on black background.

Notice 'dark' servers are 2/50 and daylight servers are 50/50? I assume that's why, so that people can play in the dark without holding a 'kill me' light. Still, I wish the dusk as pointed out above was the full 'darkness'. When I first experienced it I said, "Man, this is how darkness should be!"
-
Quick note: The OP experienced Dusk and was curious about it. During Dusk, which not many people encounter, it is literally pitch black. I had a guy full sprint in front of me out of the darkness and all I could see was his hat as it touched the horizon a little bit. You literally cannot see anything even with gamma up full blast. As time went on and the moon rises, you slowly get to see more and more. Eventually it gets as the OP described where he switched servers and the moon is out and it's kind of like playing in 'greyscale' mode. See pretty good just black and white. Dusk is awesome. Find servers which have timezones which are just getting dark (IRL) to experience this. First twilight comes, where you can see but things fade, and finally it's just pitch black blobs everywhere, and then the moon comes up and you can see again.

Unfortunately, without air superiority, a single sniper will take out your entire organized platoon as it blunders through the wilderness. Small groups are key... but um... well, lol.. I guess if you have 40 people you could all just hang in a single server and kill zombies all day with no risk of dying!

Free, with paid-for new maps. 1. This gets cheap-o-gamers to keep in the game i.e. same community level 2. This gets a constant stream of income as you develop new maps. Sure you could get $60 in one fell swoop, or $10 / X number months between releases for years. 3. People can still play with their indecisive friends because they can play on the starting maps, which should be good enough to play on constantly 4. People will then buy the maps their friends like the best and join them there 5. People who hate certain maps don't have to buy it 6. On and on goodness with respect to the playerbase who have already 'purchased' DayZ (by purchasing Arma2) Of course the greedy capitalist says take $60 on the hype of the game and fly with it.

Check your email I responded right away, lol where'd you go? BTW if anyone is in the same situation I have no problem helping out I know how frustrating it can be.

How about master-server based loot? As frustrating as it is to walk into a large building and find nothing but tin cans, it's more ludicrous to log into a server the next day to find your building full of high-end loot. Like someone walked in and died all over the room dropping all their gear everywhere while you slept. A master-loot table with a set amount of weapons available across all servers would be awesome. Where the clan which hordes all the .50 cals obviously took months to acquire them by hunting down every owner across all servers. When a weapon is lost from either a dead survivor or other means, the master server opens a slot for that weapon and it spawns on some other server later, keeping a static number available. I really like this idea; makes it more important to loot players who get killed, and to help those who have good weapons and are in need of aid.

New player - 72 hours into DayZ and why I think this is the greatest game ever!
Vexus replied to Audio Rejectz's topic in New Player Discussion
I was running and saw up ahead a helicopter crash. Sweet! I look around, pretty clear, and then start running towards it. Then as I get almost in range of zombies where I know I'll need to crouch, I see off about a kilometer away someone prone sliding out from a tree. Crap! I zoom in for a closer look; hard to tell but looks like a survivor... just can't take the chance. So I quickly run to a nearby tree. I start poking my head around the tree trying to see and not get shot. He's way off, but I'm not going to risk anything. I take out my binoculars and lean off the side of the tree to get a closer look. It's shaky due to being in pain from zombies earlier, but I had to look before taking pain killers. I see him slowly strafe-crawling to his nearby tree - ah ha! He's worried I'm going to shoot him now! I look back after taking some pain killers and he's right behind the tree, just like me. I start to look around - should I take this nearby shrub and tree-line towards him and see if he's friendly and/or engage him? My AKM goes up to 800m zero, maybe I can hit him. Hmm. I'm behind the tree looking around for about a minute before I look back. He's gone! I look again... gone. Hmm. I wait a little longer paying close attention to the forest he was near and the tree-line he could use to approach me. I take out binos again and look back to his spot. Ah damn. What I thought was a prone survivor with his sights on the crash and me... was a pig. I relaxed and killed about 10-12 zombies at the crash, looted some nice loot, and proceeded to the pig. Shot him between the eyes with my revolver and cooked his meat to heal up. That's what the risk of imminent death does to you. -
This Week's Official Challenge & Response: CHALLENGE: FREEFALL RESPONSE: WINTER For those who aren't familiar, a sign / countersign is an agreed upon set of words that friendly forces use to identify themselves to each other. How it works is when one person sees the other person, he says the Challenge. Upon hearing the Challenge, the other person says the Response to confirm he is a friendly. Don't need to go into sentences and all that stuff, but if you're interested read about the usage here: http://en.wikipedia....sign_(military) Another name for this is Challenge / Response which makes a little more sense to most people rather than sign / countersign. Someone challenges your friendly status with a challenge word, and you respond with the response word or else face certain doom. I am creating this to hopefully reduce the number of bandits who fake being friendly. Of course, they can use it too, but it will cut back on the numbers quite a bit as not everyone reads the forums all the time. If this becomes well received, maybe it can be updated daily to really make it stick. The idea is that you, a friendly player by nature, want to meet other friendly players. By keeping disciplined and checking this thread once per week (daily if you guys like it and think it helps) you will learn the challenge and response to say to players who use it over chat or voice. Also, spread the word to the friendly people you meet to check this out so they too know and keep up to date with this. When you receive a challenge, you immediately type or say the response to identify yourself as friendly. Most likely, if someone is challenging you, they have a bead on you with their weapon, so don't hesitate or look around - just reply with your response first. This will ensure the guy doesn't fire because he feels you are looking around for him trying to shoot him. The rules are below regarding updating and usage. Hope this helps and please leave any comments. To start it off, this week will be the famed countersign used in WW2. Rules: 1. The Sign & Countersign will be updated every Sunday night at 11:59pm Pacific Time (UTC-08:00). 2. When hearing the challenge word, respond immediately with the response word. 3. When challenging someone, give them at least 5 seconds to respond - use your own discretion. 4. When hearing the challenge word, do not scan around with your weapon raised looking for the challenger - he will shoot you. 5. Group up with your new friendly partner and SURVIVE! 6. Check this thread every week and make sure you know the proper Challenge / Response! Updated: 7/15/2012 11:33pm PST

Official 'Friendly' Challenge & Response
Vexus replied to Vexus's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Thanks for the response. I will keep it updated weekly and see how it goes. I think once a few people see it in action they will rely on it a little more. Sure bandits can use it but as I stated before, someone calling out the challenge probably has a bead on you with their weapon, so there's a good chance they wouldn't waste the breath if they were not friendly. And someone responding with the response will probably be friendly if not thankful they had some warning coming. The only risk is: 1. Bandits calling out the challenge when they know someone is around to lure them out 2. Bandits responding with the response word to gain your trust This is why it's updated, and hopefully subtle enough that well... what bandit wants to check this thread once a week to use it once in a thousand encounters with another player? Only the truly dedicated friendlies will like this kind of thing and that's why it's here. Some way of checking. And if you're a 'neutral good' kind of person hey, at least you gave that guy you just killed a chance rather than just blasting him outright.
