  1. Ascending: DayZ has a lot in common with "rouge-like" games such as nethack. Like nethack you start with no food, driving you further down into the dungeon into greater danger to find it. Nethack, like DayZ features perma-death, is hardest at the start and gets easier as your options for survival increase (as you find more items, etc). Nethack has a scoring system, where you can "ascend" the dungeon and leave, with your score being calculated by the value of the stuff your bringing with you. In addition to score, people will often also bring things like an icebox full of booze for their imagined retirement. In DayZ this could take the form of several map-edge locations one could travel if they wished to leave and reset their character, generating a record of what they had on Rocket's planned statistics page, including the fact that they did not actually die, but rather left on their own accord. Conducts: In Nethack, there are also many "conducts", behaviors or restrictions that the player voluntarily places upon himself that the game keeps track of. Some obvious options would be: Clean Hands: Never killing a player Pacifist: Never killing a zombie Decaf: Don't drink any soda Vegan: Would require more food types to implement Note that they differ from "achievements" in that they place voluntary restrictions on the players behavior, rather than rewarding them for things that they have done (like kill x number of zombies or players, etc). These conducts would be recorded in your final stats page which would be generated on death or acsention.
  2. Unfortunately many of these fixes must come from bohemia, I think they know how important it is and are trying to improve things. That said, I wouldn't expect things to get much better until Arma3.
  3. Right on the first note, zombies are only intended to be an obstacle, not uber undead assassins (thats the players job). Zombie difficulty fluctuates from patch to patch, currently they are pretty easy, and your other two comments are not accurate. I *normally* sprint through cities, and I have no issue using my enfield because I'll just kill all of them that come after me anyway that don't peel off from buildings, hills, or trees.

    Mode of Operation - KOS?

Or option C, a player that has friends he plays with already already, and gets gear solely in order to kill other players. Slaughtering zombies by the hundreds looses its charm & challenge after awhile after all.
  5. It's logical, that one would attempt to conceal a small campsite as is the case now. Hunting for tents and harassing other players is also a common "endgame" activity, which also makes sense, and is fun. However the persistence of tents on a server encourages players to place these campsites farther afield than is either realistic, or fun. It also encourages players to spread out their stuff across many servers, creating an unnatural glut of tents everywhere. To address this I would suggest the following: 1. Base assets to be saved in the hive 2. However they would still be tied to only the server where they were placed. 3. Lastly that a player would have a small limit to the number of servers where deployed assets could be saved. For example a limit of two servers. Logically there would be a web or in game interface that would allow you to delete assets from the hive you placed on a server you can either no longer access/want allowing you to choose a new server. 4. The assets would not disappear for 10-15 mins after the owner disconnects (ideally this would apply to the player as well) preventing the lame logoffski issues currently present. Also, while small campsites are a great feature, for a group of players working together, it's less important that a base is hidden, than it is that its defensible. Thus I would suggest adding additional deployable structures such that a proper base could be built. Lastly on the topic of vehicles... Instead of making them a fixed limited quantity on a server, I think they should be rare spawns, or even built from rare part spawns. Stored in the hive, and disappear with their owner. Again encouraging players to attempt to hide vehicles in the far reaches of the map is not realistic, or fun. You should rage when you loose a vehicle, they should be rare and special, but the current mechanic I don't think works very well. Some will suggest that "oh you just want your stuff safe". No not really, I want player vs player base raids to be more meaningful. I want players to have incentive to be there and defend, and not feel the need to put their bases so far away.
  6. Position and scouting is more important than your l33t twitch skills. Thats just a fact both in real life and in Arma, its the way it should be. The accuracy / recoil need to be redone, accuracy needs to be worse than it is now from recoil, but better more quickly from simple exhastion, its crazy how long it takes for your weapon to be accurate after a run. Hopefully resolved in Arma3, it wont happen before then. This is pretty good in arma2, most guns do not kill you in one body hit as your suggesting, but it is going to hurt/disable you as it should. I'd like to agree, however many of the iron sights are terrible. See recoil response. Hopefully in Arma3, but I'd be fine with all servers being in Vet mode even now. I generally can in arma, better sounds coming in Arma3. DayZ can't do anything about this.

    Why Day-Z Fails

In what movie has this ever really been the case? It's the other way around, and this mod has that right. *Newsflash* he can't fix much of that. Not on the Arma2 engine. Don't expect something that feels truly polished until DayZ comes out in some form on Arma3.
  8. Well... you'd buy the new game, or keep playing the free arma 2 mod if you wished? It's not really more complicated than that.

    Battleship in a field!

When DayZ adopts the totally awesome and not bad in any way FtP model, you'll be able to spawn these battleships on top of peoples heads for about 1$ each.

    Where is this game going?

You will get a good feel for this by watching interviews with rocket, as well as reading his posts. I personally love the direction he wants to go, me commenting further on that would be fairly irrelevant, its best to go read/watch it all for yourself.
  11. Who: Me Where: On every server I've played on I have to confess, I cheat constantly. In fact I'm not sure how to play without cheating (I've tried really hard to figure out a way to play legit, but thus far I have been unsuccessful). I'm ashamed, but let me try to explain. My crime wave started when I first started playing DayZ a few days ago when I entered a supermarket, I was quite wounded while running from some zombies, so I decided to eat all the food I could find, however strangely enough it wasn't working, I clicked several times, but it wouldn't eat. Eventually it started eating, but instead of getting the 250 health I deserved I got many thousands getting me back to 12000. Soon after I found my first tent, a similar event happened, and I wound up getting 3 instead of 1. So I decided to make a camp site, found a good spot, pitched one of the tents and stored the rest, things were looking good! The next day I came back and found 3 tents where my one was before, so I took those down, and in my original one were my spare tents. Then I noticed I was also holding the spare tents I had previously. So now my 1 tent find had now turned into about 9. I killed someone and took his NV goggles and rangefinder, apparently I'm a murderer, thief AND a cheater :(. It wasn't night, so I stored that stuff in my tent, the server crashed, and now I had 4 nv goggles 2 range finders in my tent, and the stuff on my person was completely gone including my backpack.... I was killed one time, then it spawned me as the opposite gender(wtf?), at my campsite, with items I had two days ago. Other times tents have moved slightly (one I had in a tree, moved into the tree, and I could no longer access it), or were completely gone. Switching servers frequently results in loosing gear or getting rolled back hours. Gear being deleted without prompt under certain conditions, etc. --------------------------------- Light trolling aside, many who will respond to this post are new to Arma and will reply "oh don't worry, its still in alpha/beta, bugs are to be expected, etc, etc". To that I would say this: I've played Arma since OFP, the engine itself has *always* had issues like this. Arma has only ever been very playable in private groups and only using mods that don't require the server to be running for long, or make heavy use of item persistence. You saw all the same kinds of issues playing Sahrani Life in Arma 1, and that's not to say anything about real cheaters. Yes, even Arma 1 had people exploiting the weak scripting system, teleporting around, invincibility, duping/spawning items, even summoning a nuke and blowing up a whole city. Has Arma2 improved things? Yes, some, but on many of the security issues, barely at all, and for a mod like this that depends on persistence, it's utterly game breaking. Don't expect any of this to be resolved in Arma2. I just hope Arma3 finally addresses all the issues the engine has with security and persistence, because I really like the gameplay in DayZ, and it certainly has done a great deal to promote Arma in general.
  12. if so, your probably the only one
  13. Server 1: The first character I got reasonably far with, I had a bus and a tent in the north east part of the map. The server now looks to be down permanently so I started trying others. As a side note, two of my friends I was playing with, after they disconnected and reconnected got rolled back about 3-4 hours, though I was unaffected. Server 2: I started fresh (on the coast with no items) however it did not prompt me to select between male/female, it was marked as hive enabled. So I assumed that my last server simply wasn't hive enabled, and thus I wasn't going to get my stuff. Eventually died and restarted on this server again, however instead of starting fresh I got rolled back before my death by about an hour. Played some more, eventually getting killed, restarted, this time fresh again on the coast with no gender prompt again. Decided to try a different server. Server 3: Logged on to another server, also hive enabled, and now I had all my stuff from the original server (server 1), minus the bus and tent of course, but with everything I had before on my person, and where my campsite was in the north east. ???? now I was confused, so I decided to try some other servers as well. Server 4: (again, hive server) Started fresh, with gender selection. Server 5: At my camp site in the northeast, but with no gear at all. All of the above servers were running the same beta patch as I, and the same dayz version. Please educate me as to how any of this makes sense.... Is there something I can do to verify/force my save? Thanks
