I've also noticed this. Nighttime during my first few weeks was nearly pitch black. Lately, though, the nights have been so bright that, if anything, it's been easier to play. My vision is no worse, yet the zombies are nearly blind.

More Barbed Wire Fencing complaints...
louist replied to commiedic (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've had the artifacting as well, and it seems to be caused by dead soldiers and barbed wire. The artifacting starts off like your pictures, but the longer I play and the closer I get to whatever is causing it, the more pervasive it becomes. I've had it cover my entire screen, in all directions. People have suggested changing video options, but the only fix I've found to work is actually restart the game. Logging out and back in again does nothing for me. I guess I just have to avoid all military camps and cities.... Sigh. -
The server rules thread says you may lock it up to 5 minutes before server restarts... http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/62195-server-hosting-rules/ Not sure what these other guys are spouting.

Last night a buddy and I found our very first helicopter crash site. We underestimated how dangerous it was, which cost us our lives. My buddy logged out (it was late) and I made the 2 hour trek from my spawn to the crash. Amazingly, it was still there. I found an MP5SD in a nearby deer stand, and with it was able to clear a path to the helicopter. While my body had disappeared, my friend's hadn't, so I grabbed his most valued possessions. I also filled my Alice pack with an FN FAL for him and a ASW for me, an amazing score. I can't begin to describe my excitement and relief. I ran off to hide and mark the position on the map for the other players, as I had been forced to leave behind a second FN FAL, and about 20 minutes after looting the heli, logged out. This afternoon I log back in, and everything seems OK. I still have the MP5SD in my hands, my main inventory is filled with FN FAL and STANAG clips for the new weapons, and a couple Morphines and Blood Bags--Everything I hadn't dropped to carry the new guns. But opening my pack, I don't have the guns. I have everything that was in it prior to looting the crash. No FAL, No ASW. Damnit DayZ. Edit: Actually, my main inventory is missing his Camo Clothes. Shiiiiiiit.

I'd prefer a one-time payment. The rest I have no valid opinions of.

Hey all. This is my 4th day of playing DayZ. I've commited a few accidental kills, and I've killed a few people in self defense, but until today I wasn't so jaded as to kill someone who was oblivious to my presence. Today I was killed by a sniper as I gutted a goat, and later on had my leg shattered by another would-be sniper. I was shot in the back by someone who claimed to be friendly. And I had another life nearly end when another "friendly" found an axe while we were looting the Elektro Docks. He chased me halfway to Cherno. So enough with this, I thought, I'm no longer going to give anyone a chance. From now on anyone I don't know personally is an enemy. And it's been going well. On an expedition to see the NWAF for the first time, I came upon a small camp. Two survivors were cooking meat in a small fire, the smoke of which first drew my attention. I moved at a crouch to about 45m, looked down the sights of my enfield, and pop, pop. Two fewer enemies for me to face. I dug through their gear and the contents of their tent and helped myself to a real bounty of meat, canteens, a map and compass (A big thank you for those!), a toolbox, a new pack, a G17 and an CZ 550. This agressive defence business is pretty lucurative. A few hours later, after getting a little lost (even with the map and compass!), I found myself at the airfield. I spent a long time just watching the place. I did an awful lot of crawling and sticking to the tree lines. I didn't like how open the hangers were, and I thought heading for the control tower would end in a sniper-assisted suicide. And besides, not only had I heard that the barracks is the best place to find items, but it was also very close to a dense patch of woods. Things actually went really smoothly. I managed to hop over the barbed-wire someone had set up in the doorway, and greedily sucked up anything of value. There wasn't much left, clearly someone had beated me to it, but I got a military flashlight, and some grenades. Things got a little dicier when I tried to leave. I couldn't step over the wire to leave, so I had crawl my way trough a gap between the wire and the bathroom door, trying to find out where I could use the toolkit to take it down. As soon as I had accomplished that, 2 survivors came in. The first on had an AKM, and the second one (curiously) was unarmed. They didn't even look in my direction. G17 took care of them nicely. I decided to swap my CZ for the AKM, and GTFO before anyone came looking. I guess these two Alt-F4'd, because I recieved neither murder counts, not bandit kills. All in all, treating everyone as an enemy has been much more rewarding than trusting even a few. I haven't been betrayed, I'm better stocked than I have ever been, and I made it into and out of what seems to be one of DayZ'z most notorious locations. I am a little bummed, though, that I didn't find any shiny military gear; I've seen AKMs in other places. I have a parting question, if I may: I had heard that the G17 has a built in flashlight, but I couldn't figure out how to work it. Is there something special I need to be doing? Thanks!

I love these stories. It's night here and their freaking me out in just the right way. But a nagging thought in my mind demands an answer: how is it that some of these creepy encounters shine with such polish when the mod itself lacks polish to such a spectacular degree? Two possible explanations suggest themselves: either the authors are embellishing, or there truly is a ghost in this particular machine.

There are some places which are generally less populated, but nowhere is really safe per se. You tend to encounter violent people wherever you go. The most dangerous spots are Cherno, Elektro, NWAF, and Stary. Everywhere else comes in second place. Hell, I've encountered and killed people in the absolute sticks. They might have been under the same misguided notion as I was: that traveling the long circuitous routes through the woods would be safer than more direct paths.

You are beautiful. Never change.

This, this, a thousand times this. Oh, it seems to have been fixed. Thank you.

No, but you just know I will be watching the one you chose to play. Bandits are like that.

The shooting bugs and why this game will become a sniper war...
louist replied to Hanga's topic in New Player Discussion
I've had this happen to me as well. I was looting the power plant fire station in Elektro just before it became too dark to see without a light. Hearing footsteps behind me, I whirled around, brought my AKM to irons, and put 5 rounds into the torso of a survivor with an axe. Nothing! He closed the last few feet, hitting me once, while I continued firing into him, and hit me a second time, killing me. I fired 10 shots on semi-auto at a range that shrank from 3 meters to point blank. I didn't miss, and I didn't even damage him. Lag isn't the issue here. The US servers I play on show up at 15 or 16ms. Desync is always possible, but you'd imagine that goes both ways. -
Looking at server list, I notice most, by far, are 1.7.2.3. (1200 of 1500 servers, in fact!) I don't know what that means for you, exactly.
-
Your character is persistent. Barring glitches, you will be at the same location, with the same items, and the same injuries, on whichever server you join. This is a major feature of the game, and I'm surprised you missed out on the fact.

Have you friend set up, shoot him until he respawns, wait for scavengers?

New player Qustion for veterans
louist replied to [email protected]'s topic in New Player Discussion
No loot, or no loot this time? Some of the shacks only have 1 loot spawn, and a 30 or 40% chance of actually spawning. I won't say I cannot be wrong, but nothing I've seen has proven otherwise. The closest I've come is two loot able building not marked on the map. They had zombies, and investigating them, I also found some food and tin cans. -

Contrary to what stuffnthings has said, zombies only spawn at buildings that have a chance of loot. You can test this put by checking the loot map from dayzdb, and going to any of the remote non-loot buildings. You won't find any zombies. Just keep in mind that loot has merely a chance to spawn. Often times low value buildings will spawn zombies, but no loot. -
Download through steam, launch the game once through steam (for some last minute installation that steam does the first time you run a game), Downlaod Six Updater Suite from the DayZ Downloads page, run that, and you're done.

I've noticed at deer blinds that using a loud weapon (in this case an Enfield) not only draws the other zombies to you, it spawns new ones. I had to kill 9 zombies when I carelessly failed to notice one.

Thanks for the solidarity, I guess? :P

Just hit Berezino last night for the first time, taking the eastern route back from NWAF. It was the first time I've been there, and the first time I've been to the hospital and larger residential buildings. Was completely empty, the military camp, aparments, supermarket, and hospital were all fully loaded. I also encountered a glitched out hopper zombie who spotted me across a field while I was prone, and taking him down with the AKM drew another dozen... Had anyone been watching, I probably would have been dead. Oh well, I guess I was lucky.

Why do people stay on recruit servers and kill new players?
louist replied to DerekTen's topic in New Player Discussion
Part of the issue is that once you are well geared, there is not a lot that the game offers in regards to challenge. There are players who are happy living up north, who see how long they can survive off the land, or those who have other RP goals. There are some who like to establish campsites, stockpile weapons, gear, and vehicles. But as far as I have seen, both groups are in the minority, and they will get bored like anyone else. Most people, though. see little else to do once their equipped and turn eventually to the one constant challenge: other people. -
Thanks for the replies everyone. It seems my experience is very typical, which is a shame, really. I've only had one "good" experience with a stranger, on my second day. A real-life friend and I were trying to meet up. He had spawned west of Cherno, and I east of Elektro. At this point we both knew very little of the geography, so to make meeting up easier, we both followed a set power lines towards each other. When we found each other I noticed a player, armed, was following my friend. I called out "friendly" and he asked if we were armed and what we were doing up in the mountains. I told him--truthfully if not exactly wisely--that we had only an axe between us, and had spent an hour trying to meet up. He contemplated this for a minute before telling us to run down towards the coast. He told us he would keep his weapon trained on us until we were far enough away for him to safely continue on his way. Despite his promise not to shoot, we zigged and zagged our asses off. That's the closest either of us has had to a peaceful encounter. Neither of us are willing to trust others anymore.
