How do you Pronounce the name?
bacon55 (DayZ) replied to Finch (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Really should have been a hyphen in the name, lol. Dayz, pronounced "days", sounds like teenager vernacular. Day-Z. Problem solved. -
This mod is better NOW then ever before

Deal with it. Does this mod attract a disproportionate number of the socially challenged or is it just my imagination? -
Why DayZ is extremely FUN
bacon55 (DayZ) replied to Ub3rS0ldat's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Honest question: Will beans and continuous ammo replenishment, killing unlimited zombies that respawn in minutes, and the occasional player, actually keep you here for months, years? -

The New Zombie Count is AWESOME

Everything here. We need something to do. Beans and endless zombies respawning into towns we can never reconquer doesn't do it for me. This would be like Domination continually attacking the same town, with the tanks and infantry endlessly respawning. Or Warfare with no ability to beat the other team. There has to be some real sense of accomplishment, and I don't think getting some guns and grabbing beans is a long term solution to that. -

Where are the vehicle locations?
bacon55 (DayZ) replied to kevinzlocker@live.com's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I just want a damn bicycle, lol. They should be pretty common. -
A: They can't just make the map smaller, not unless you want to play on a different map. Sure they could try to make one, that would be a huge project. B: The size is fine, any smaller and we'll be dead too quickly. C: It's Alpha, give the game some time before we know how frequency of interaction is going to work out. More vehicles kicking around, some sort of missions, bases, could change all that.

I really think there needs to be some physical separation, like a hyphen, between Day and Z. Dayz seems like 13 year old internet speak unless you say Day - Z.

IF this was an actual game...
bacon55 (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
This discussion might be easier when we know how Arma 3 works. The map is massive. It could actually maintain 1000 people without it turning into a gong show. The question is can the engine support that? If not that utterly changes the dynamic, and pretty much guarantees then need to maintain community servers, or a switch to a new engine. -
Are people more hostile, or friendly?

There shouldn't be any pvp-free trading post region!

Except in Arma your targets usually can, and do, actively fight back. This is not a survival simulation. It's a human social simulator with realistic weaponry. Absolutely nothing on here can be construed as representing what would happen in reality. That doesn't make sense. I mean look at even the most realistic Arma battles compared to what would happen in real life. Nothing close. The only time it is close is when it's done in a completely controlled environment with the human players instructed deliberately to follow realistic procedures based on scientific study. And ya I know my fair share of recentwar vets from WWIIOL, they weren't the lone wolfing types for the most part...

I've found the middle of the woods to be mostly safe as well. Simple because of the huge amount of woods and the limited lines of sight. You do inevitably have to leave those sheltered areas though, and then what the OP says rings perfectly true. If your pursuer manages to keep a bead on you in the forest you're probably hooped though. Given the time it takes a lot of these PK'rs to get their weapons - they're anything but impatient. Best advice if you manage to get away, log off. What type of sane person wants to be running from some guy with an assault rifle for half an hour with a 1/20 chance of survival? Not me. However, OFP had a mission kind of like that, but you didn't have the terminator after you, and the chance of survival was 90+% if you did what you were told to do.

+1. I'm done playing specifically because of that. In a real-life situation' date=' people are going to turn into animals. However, the incidents that followed Katrina or any other massive disaster were minor compared to the number of people involved. There's also the mental aspect that isn't considered. A lot of people carry guns and wave guns around (street hoods mugging someone) but don't have the guts to pull the trigger. Gamers are conditioned to feel nothing when killing people in a game, so it's no problem to simply massacre people by the truckload. So the experiment is already invalid. Thus why I said to force things on players who are murderers to reflect a diminished mental state. [/quote'] Until people get to the point where they think they're dying immediately the vast majority retain what we call "humanity", I mean literally "I'm going to drown/burn" etc, right now. We've got plenty of evidence for this. This mod, this game, absolutely cannot simulate any of that, and it shouldn't try to get close. What basically has to be done is a massively unrealistic level of psychotic/suicidal behaviour is inherent because it's a game, and you build around that, trying to make it as hardcore as possible while still being playable. What the system will look like will take time, it'll be multifaceted no question. Pretending there's no problem is just silly and these greifer types are going to utterly ruin their own fun as well if they got their way. The game will have to force something that's approachable and not completely cuthroat. No one wants to play poker for no money with some asshole who always goes all in. That's essentially what we're looking at. There's basically no reason not to go all in.

They've already made it very clear there are going to be more consequences to certain types of play. The entire structure is artificial so anything is going to "artificial". FFS this is not a social simulator. It's exactly what it is in that respect, a digital communications link. The ONLY way the Arma engine is a simulator (and even then, kinda so-so), is military hardware. That's it. That's where the "simulation" ends. Beyond that you're playing a game, with all the same trappings of any other game ever made. How the devs deal with social aspects that are utterly devoid of a connection to reality will be what makes or breaks this mod. It's killed games before when they make them too carebear or too friendly to griefers. "It's a survival simulation" is absolutely spectacularly braindead and anyone who brings that up should be ashamed. It does absolutely nothing to simulate reality in a crisis, because there is no functional fear of death or psychological/physical trauma. End of story.

That's utter nonsense. If the person who has you in their sights with a decent weapon is a good shot you're dead. PvP basically requires some level of equality. Would you consider it still PvP if a bunch of them weren't armed? Because they might as well not be when it's a pistol or shotgun versus an assault rifle. It's like being the spear chucking natives going against gatling armed British troops in Africa. Hardly much of a game.

Suck it up isn't gonna cut it there champ. Neither myself nor the vast majority of others will continue to fall prey to advanced weaponry wielded by man children exercising their impotent fantasies. It's everything that's bad about PK'ing with that disgusting air of justification. The game needs to be dangerous, it needs to be hard, but I'm not going to keep playing a MUCH more time consuming version of get raped by the A10 in the Domination Spawn Point. Because that's all it is at this point. Try to make it something else. Honestly, you truly believe this is anything CLOSE to an appropriate simulation? With you sitting at your computer desk, at home, able to respawn? You think that makes sense? If so, I'm done, please don't respond to me anymore. That is a catastrophic level of cognitive dissonance.

Just giving you a heads up - you're not going to have anyone to shoot at if something isn't done about it. "The game has a title that I think means something' date=' that means I can utilize every anti-social behaviour that gets me banned from other servers". That's hilarious you think that, but there's a reason that can't *work*. No one wants to be your bitch, and they'll stop playing. That's WHY they're banned from other servers. It doesn't matter what you call it, no one wants to sit around and be your prey for fun. [/quote'] I find it funny you immediately assume that I'm some asshole griefer who regularly kills for fun. You don't have to sit around and get shot, will you listen to your words? You've countered not one point of my argument, by your logic anyone who plays must either stand in spawn idle and get shot or be the one doing the spawn shooting. Leave the thread if you've got no good point to make. This psychotic idea that surviving = shooting everything that moves, is evidence enough you're a greifer. Here is my point, and it's the only one relevant to this game, or ANY other game that has had to deal with the same thing: No one wants to be easy prey, repeatedly, for someone else who is much better geared. In every single game that's ever had benefits to levelling, this problem has to be dealt with. You seem to think because this is a "survival" game, everyone just has to suck it up and get their ass kicked. That's great you think that. But it's not going to happen. People are just going to stop playing. You obviously don't understand human beings if you can't realize this is the inevitable result of your activity, and with no change in the structure of the mod. It's the same reason that PK'ers have to be kicked from Arma. Sure, in real life there is some random friendly fire, even psychotic mass murder. But it's ABNORMAL, no one wants to play the culled sheep to a mad man constantly. That's ridiculous anyone would want to, and it's why every game has to deal with anti-social "survival" or "this is what reality should be like", nutjobs in every game.
