There have been multiple occasions where I can tell someone is looking in my bag but have no proof. Its not very realistic that someone can be standing a foot away from you and you have no idea if they are rummaging through your bag. Currently the only option is to constantly check to see if an item has gone missing. I would like to add a function that lets you check if someone is looking in your bag. Maybe only allow you to check once every 10 seconds, so you have to catch someone in the act. Make pickpocketing more exciting for both parties.

I have no problem with thievery. But right now there is no challenge to the actual stealing part, there is only the trust game. I want to make it a more dynamic real play style, for both the thief and the mark.

Well when I was new, I always figured that the danger was IN the building. So I would rush in ready to shoot. And get shot in the back by the guy who followed me in. Next I tried crawling towards the building all ninja-style. Then a sniper would shoot me. So I started hanging out and watching from the bushes. That's when a sniper would shoot me. Now I scout sniper spots, then scout the building, then rescout the sniper spots then run like crazy.

Where Do You Find Your Challenge?

How has that quest been going for you? -
Well I like helping strangers. And you never know if someone is a bad guy. I would agree that my choice is not wise if all I cared about was how many hours I stayed alive. One of my traps, is that I will put a pistol with no ammo in my bag. I instantly see them equip it and shoot them in the face. "Keep your hands out of people's bags." BLAM! Street justice! But this only works on idiots. Coincidently, idiots tend to also be thieves. ;-)
-
I would just worry that the sound would be TOO obvious. If I know every time, no one is going to pickpocket. What if you had like a little mini game to unzip the bag, if you failed it made the noise? I don't know what you would do to make the mini game realistic though. Zipper simulator!

A lot of people seem to have problems with the death messages. Some want more info(kill cams, name of killer) and some want less(remove kill messages). An idea to fit in both camps: what if you could look around after being "killed" for like 5 seconds. So say you really died at -2500 blood. At 0 blood you went into an unconscious like state, where all you could do is look around. Until you reached -2500 blood. And you lost 500 blood a second till death. Realismwise, people rarely die instantly unless you hit something vital. This few seconds represents your last few moments as you bleed out. A headshot would put you below -2500 and you would never get to look around. Adding more value to a skilled shot.

It would be totally cool to have an area you could not spend too much time in due to radiation, exposure, infection, etc. It made for really dramatic moments in Fallout, Metro 2033, and Stalker. But whenever you suggest something that was done in another game, everyone freaks out like you are crazy. As if everything wasn't based on something else anyway.

I ran into one of the wooden residential houses after spawning, looking for a weapon. The building had nothing and as I tried to leave a zombie ran into the doorway. I backed up and he entered the house. I then freaked out because I was trapped and tried to push past him in the doorway. After about 10 seconds of failing to get past, the zombie suddenly died. The doorways have finally forgiven me and have come to my aid in battle! After so many leg brakes from doorways I have earned their trust, I was thrilled to give that zombie his just deserts!

I always thought it would be cool if the global kill messages were disable, but add a local one. So if someone died within 500m(or whatever) you could see the message. Representing you hearing them scream or cry out or whatever. Realism wise, people rarely die instantly when shot unless you hit the head, heart, or lungs. So most people would have seconds if not minutes in real life to do something before they succumbed to their wounds. Ultimately it would be cool if there was like a dying scream sound effect, like the being eaten sound effect and not have any message.

I like the idea, but its hard to imagine it fitting in. In L4D the Tank is fun because he immediately alters your play style. You are aggressive till he shows up and now you have to be defensive. Same with the witch. They both make you play the game differently when they are around. That is fun to me. To fit in with the theme of the game, what if instead of some super monster it was a roaming Horde like in Walking Dead. A tight group of 30-50 zombies would be really dangerous to alert. I would just want a situation where everyone is too afraid to fire their weapons because it might alert them. I doubt the Arma engine and the servers would like to render that many zombies in 1 place. But I can dream!

Pot calling the kettle black are we? Immutable, you DC after being shot. I've reported you to the very admins you are complaining about. I would love for them to ban you. And even if they are locking the server, why does it matter to you? Play on one of the hundred other servers. Oh, you WANT to play on this specific server? Then they must be doing something right.

Last night I killed my first player...
Taggert1313 replied to CDMoose's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
During night time in Cherno, I got startled by a bandit at point blank range as we both came around a corner simultaneously. I managed to escape before he killed me. About 2 mins later, I was so full of adrenaline from my encounter that when someone came around the corner I emptied my clip into them. It wasn't the same person, and I felt really bad. Then they DC'ed and I no longer felt bad because they deserved to be shot. ;) I do feel bad sometimes when I know someone is trying to trick me and I kill them. Their plan was so obvious it hurt. Oh you need a blood transfusion and you're just going to stand their holding an axe? New players who play like DayZ is a deathmatch, make me sad. Couldn't you wait till you learned how to play before you tried to shoot everyone you saw? -
I think it would be a good idea if the spawns to the West of Kamenka are removed. Specifically the ones on the far side of the bridge west of Kamenka. The number one reason is that you can spawn and not see Kamenka and if a new player runs West, they aren't going to know for a while that there is nothing in that direction. A secondary reason, is that you are really, really far away from everything. It is about a 30 min run to the nearest point of interest(aside from deer stands). I dread seeing Kamenka when I respawn.
-
It seems a tad unrealistic to me that you could be shot 3 time, then just bandage yourself up, eat an entire cow and be fine. Or even get a blood transfusion. What if when you get shot your maximum health goes down by ~15%-20% of the damage you received. This would represent a frailness of your body that isn't instantly fixed by health items. Then this maximum penalty would slowly fade away over time, say +1 max blood a second till you are back to normal.

I like the idea. I know there are several posts about this, but that just shows that people are interested in this. The point of the game, as I understand it, is to promote all playstyles. Not just YOUR style. So if this was added, it would need to be something subtle. Nothing that added combat value, or like several people mentioned most people would pick it. I personally would be a medic or engineer. I love building bases and helping people, so something like this would interest me. A doctor WOULD be better at medicine. A mechanic WOULD be better at fixing cars. Little bonuses that your character is born with. I think subtle is the key to making something like this work. Class balance is always a pain in games, so make it more roleplaing and less important. So what if was like this: Soilder: can combine several partially used ammo clips into 1 full clips Doctor: Faster transusions and bandaging Engineer: Faster setup/tear down time for building objects Mechanic: Faster repair of vehicles Etc: etc I just think it would be really cool to see people in tattered versions of their uniforms from their profession.

I know a lot of people like the M1911 and Revolver for their infinite ammo, but my suggestion is that instead of converting a magazine into the other type, it refills one you already have. So when you right click revolver ammo it says Refill M1911 magazine. It then destroys the revolver ammo(like it does now) and destroys your emptiest M1911 magazine and gives you 1 full M1911 magazine. Simulating you taking the bullets and putting them into the used magazine. This would make it more realistic (you can't convert revolver ammo into a clip for an M1911, you would need an empty one), this solves the infinite ammo exploit, and all the code for it already exists. The ammo is clearly sorted by most to least full, since reloading gives you the most full. And you have the ability to destroy and create ammo as the mechanism does this already.
-
Yeah... THAT'S how the mechanism works... Have you ever tried what you are describing? Cause that isn't how it works. Each clip is a separate object. When you reload, it picks the highest clip you have of the ammo type. It doesn't refill. You can end up with 3 or 4 clips with 1 or 2 bullets in there. I can guess what game you WERE playing, but it wasn't this one.

I would like a UI element that shows if I am currently in run or walk mode. I'm pretty sure I would know which one I am about to do in real life so it seems like a realistic addition. Sometimes it can be confusing which way the toggle is until it is too late. Similarly, an icon for which state you are in: prone, crouch, or stand. This is mainly an issue on servers with no 3rd person but could be useful if you are aiming and don't want to zoom out to look.

I normally am facinated by other player's actions. So whenever I come upon some corpses I try to figure out what happened to them. But tonight I came upon a scene I could not figure out. On server US175, at approx. 11:50pm EST on 7/15/12 I saw the killed message for 5 people. And I thought, "man that must have been quite a fight." About 5 minutes later I found their corpses in the town square building in Electro. 5 people, scattered on all floors, even the roof. 2 hatchets and 1 shotgun among them. I heard no explosions nor shots fired, as I was nearby. There were not enough guns to account for the damage, and not enough time for someone to have come before me and looted everyone. So what in the world happened? Some kind of hacker attack? Logged in from another server and died logging in? Lag bomb? Freaking me out man!

I know a lot of people are complaining about not being able to make friends or coop because everyone shoots them on sight. Well below I have a list of tips that can help you not get shot on sight!* 1) Loudly Run Now you might be saying to yourself, Taggert, if I run around people are going to know exactly where I am and kill me! Well, in my opinion this will help you not get shot for 2 reasons. A: The number 1 reason you get shot on sight near the coast is that you scared the crap out of somebody. Here they are minding their own business trying to loot some beans, and in you come sneaking around with a pistol. POW POW POW, no questions asked. You are dead. B: A bandit at range will normally wait for you to stand still before shooting. It is difficult to snipe a moving target unless you are running parallel to them. 2) Figure Out What Someone's Name is Before Your Approach Them Using the name plate, you can find out their name. Then getting near them, you can say "Hey Tom, are you friendly?" It is amazing how much it puts someone at ease to hear their own name. Also, it tells a smart person that you had the drop on them already and didn't shoot, giving you more points! 3) Always Keep An Object Between You And The New Person You can talk through walls, you can peek around corners. There is no reason to talk to someone face to face until you trust them. They don't trust you instantly either, and if they DO, it means they are killers! Watch out! 4) Not Everyone Uses a Mic and/or has Voice Sound Don't ask me why, but some people won't know you are talking to them over a mic. 5) Hatchets are Deadly Don't think that because they don't have a gun that they can't ruin your day. 6) Be Very Wary of People with Primary Weapons When people get good gear, they tend to want to use it. Someone with nothing is much more likely to be your friend. 7) Help Someone Out Saving someone from zombies, from bleeding to death, or fixing their leg is a great way to get someone to trust you. Do NOT shoot in their direction. Even if they are being attacked by zombies, they are not going to know you are being helpful. 8) Get a Gun that Kills in 1 Shot at Close Range Revolver, M1911, or any shotgun will drop or kill a survivor in 1 shot at close range. If someone does get feisty, your best bet for survival is to drop them quick. Makarov vs M1911. AK-47 vs Winchester. You are wounded and they are dead. I have used the above tips many times. My primary activity is running along the coast helping new spawns out. Most people don't want to shoot on sight, they just have to. So give them an option. Anybody else have any good tips that have worked for them? *Not responsible if tips get you eaten by zombies. Nothing is 100%, some people are just jerks! Tips on Not Getting Shot on Sight: Extended Edition 9) Avoid Roofs Now I enjoy a scenic view as much as the next guy, but roofs are always dangerous. Someone climbing onto a roof is usually up to no good. Yes, I know there is loot on some roofs, but it isn't worth it. You are an easy target for bandits. And regular survivors are going to think you're a sniper! 10) Stay By The Coast Now I know people normally respond to complaints about being shot with "head north". Well this doesn't really solve your problem. Yes, you will be shot a lot less by heading north. And this is because you won't see anybody for hours. I assume you are mad about being killed on sight because you want to interact with other players, and heading north isn't going to help that. So if you want to survive for the longest amount of time, head north. If you want a friend, stay by the coast. PS: Most people you meet up North will shoot you! 11) Avoid Groups If you see 2 or more people, you are going to want to avoid them. Once someone has found a friend, they tend to not want to risk getting another one. And real life friends, are not going to want some random guy bothering their fun. The one exception to this, is if you can hear them talking to each other over mics. This usually means they met in the game and they aren't super serious about the game. Bandits will use teamspeak, or mumble, or whatever to avoid giving away their position by talking.

Tips on Not Getting Shot on Sight

Added some new tips to the original post! -
From my observations this is how I think maps work: The server has X number of maps. When you find a map, it randomly assigns you a map object. You might get a brand new one or you might get a marked one. So anytime you acquire a map, you get a map object from the server. I believe the intention is exactly what you were worried about. Someone kills you and gets your info. But it seems to be random at the moment. I have marked a map, died, and when I found my corpse the map was different. I have logged out and logged back in to find a different map in my inventory. A way to test it. Mark a map, drop it on the ground and then pick it back up. Is it the same map or a new one?

Tips on Not Getting Shot on Sight

I think they just reduced the range of effectiveness on those pistols. I can still get 1 shot kills on a zombie by hitting them in the body with M1911 and Revolver as of today. If you shoot them in the arm or leg, they aren't going down in 1. And if you shoot them from more then like 40m they aren't going down in 1 shot either. They might not kill a player in 1 shot, but they almost always go unconscious in 1 shot. -

Yeah, if you point your crosshairs at someone it will tell you their name and distance from you. It only works up to a certain distance, and binoculars work the same way. Also you have to be on a server with this enabled. Usually recruit or regular servers. Try not to let them see you putting your crosshairs over them, people tend to get jumpy. ;-)
