Do zombies spawn if players are already in the location? my understanding was that they only spawn 200 meters in front of them. -

Part of the reason for this is to enable people to try and defend cities without zombies spawning behind them, I personally think the game would be much better if a clan or group of bandits took over a large area, such as electro.

I like the identifying suggestion for clans and squads, IMO everyone should start up with sutbley diffrent clothing which can then be customised. -

Personally an Arma 3 add on or expansion pack sounds best to me.
