No, there isn't. Even a server admin would have a hard time telling you how you died...only that its a definite case that you died at a certain time. Arma server logs are extremely arcane things that reveal very little plain data in regards to what is actually going on. Client end info is even less helpful in this regard.

We only defend third person because a rather small vocal minority on this forum appears to feel the need to attack it 3 times a day with a new thread. I personally like both the FPV and TPV views in the SA. The FPV is very natural feeling and the weapon tracking feels real and connected to actual body movement which is nicely done. TPV is nice for feeling like you're connected to your character beyond an inventory screen...which is largely why a lot of games use this view mode...to give people a sense of connection and personal investment in their characters progression via small but meaningful changes in appearance as different types of gear are gained over time. Hardcore or not, this is a game, just like Arma 3 is a game...while also apparently a "realistic military simulator". Both have TPV and FPV as an option, use whichever one suits you.

Event server - A plea for private admin server control
semipr0 replied to seifeler's topic in General Discussion
Oh jeez you opened this can of worms. Let me be succinct, the DayZ player base has one of the most ridiculously entitled player bases on the face of the planet, even trying to openly discuss the responsible use of adminstrative control opens up a Pandora's Box of people that will just outright oppose it. This is basically how the DayZ player base thinks. 1. It is not alright for the admin to be able to teleport. If the admin uses teleport functionality they are a bad admin. 2. If I die to a bug I should be teleported back to my corpse...and if the admin refuses to do so..they're a bad admin. The very same DayZ player can believe those two very same things depending on the scenario. Even trying to have this discussion with anyone that isn't a server admin or part of the DayZ dev team is pointless. So just as a word of warning, keep your head down, pay for your server and don't talk to these people about what admins need, cause its never going to be a productive conversation in this section of the forums. -

Retention - How is the Standalone going to achieve what the mod could not?
semipr0 posted a topic in General Discussion
Poll added to get an idea of what people think on this subject. Anyways, long post as short as I can possibly make it right here in this paragraph. Simple facts are as much fun as DayZ can be, the true story of it all is its not exactly what you'd call an attention holding game. At best, the DayZ Mod usually entertains people, for on average, about a month to a month and a half at best and then its pretty much BTDT until the next patch and only if that patch adds something that might make the game somewhat substantially different. So, in the shortest descriptive possible, DayZ has always kinda sucked at being more than a brief fling of a game for most people that have played it. Now, with the short description out of the way lets get a little deeper. DayZ was awesome when it first came out, it was really kind of a novel experience at the time because it combined some elements of role playing games with a main focus feature of FPS/action gaming and it was a pretty nice mix....for a mod at least, it was quite a laudable achievement to come up with such a nice balance of game mechanics and make it actually work well. But even then...it didn't really retain those 1.7 million or so survivors it had play it either, now did it. Lets face it, there are role playing games in Second Life and IMVU made by users of those platforms that have had 2 million unique players over their existence, that doesn't mean that two million people play those games every day, nor does it even mean that Second Life and IMVU have two million players consistently. DayZ as a game simply lacked any retention factor whatsoever. You spawn, you gear up, you die....and you do it again. Its very much a hamster wheel in of which, eventually even the RPG elements of it as far as loot scavenging and basic crafting and survival mechanisms eventually simply lose any shine whatsoever. Eventually even respawning to go kill more people becomes onerous and boring because its kinda something that so many other games do so much better than the Arma platform has ever done it...so once all the features that while combined make DayZ a fairly entertaining experience start to fragment into boring, repetitive actions...the game kind of exposes itself for what it really is, an unfinished thought that had a really good core foundation, but never got much more beyond that. Now a lot of mods of the mod like Origins and 2017 and Epoch and Breaking Point tried to address all this stuff, each in their own respective ways....none of which I would specifically say were effective on their own as being able to take DayZ to that next level and actually finish the thought...and in doing so, establish a heavy retention value for what is otherwise a pretty meaningless and shallow experience after you come out of the other end of it. Now as much as I'm aware that this is "Alpha" and that the "game isn't finished yet".....looking at the base functionality we have so far and extrapolating to a certain degree...even at the best guessed scenario of "completion"...I still don't think the answer to the ultimate question which faces DayZ...which is "What do I do now?", is even something that has a legitimate feature planned for it. And "Alpha" or not, the entire point of the standalone was to create a game...not a mod of a game, and if we don't tackle the ultimate question which undermines the entire DayZ experience and has since the mod was released....well then its still kind of just like the mod is it not? Except a lot more money and time got spent on it. So, in conclusion, what do you think it will take as a feature, to make DayZ a more completed gaming experience for you? If its not one of the poll options..I'd love to hear your ideas....cause I really think this game could use a few. -
I really only care if the people that were doing it were masturbating at the same time. Theres really no room for halfway measures once you've gone here....its gotta be full on nutbag or nothing cause it simply makes no sense in reality otherwise.
-
Man you are BEAST. Do you masturbate while you do it? You gotta have your pants around your ankles when doing this shit or you're simply not doing it right. EDIT TO FIND A GODDAMN EMOTICON TO SHOW THAT THAT WAS A VERY TONGUE IN CHEEK STATEMENT IN CASE SOMEONE SOMEHOW THINKS I'M FUCKING SERIOUS.

You owe me your money, I'd love to see beards I'm just realistic about their position in the development queue.....and their position along with anything else involving player individuality is somewhere at the very bottom of the pile.
-
My stance is generally one of two positions. 1.) The player I've spotted has a melee weapon is of little threat to me...so I make sure they can see my loaded weapon and let them keep moving, unless they're dumb enough to not keep moving. 2.) The player I've spotted is much more heavily geared than I am, and they haven't seen me at all and won't if I have my way about it. Or the optional third position; 3.) I'm dead...cause I'm not such an internet badass as to act like I can't occasionally get my shit pushed in by someone that got the jump on me...or a ladder that decided to catapult me off a roof.

20 Mio. $ Gross Income - does it accelerate development speed?
semipr0 replied to Novalis's topic in General Discussion
Not until they get their money. Which is likely to take a little while. I am unsure of the publishing deal between Rocket and BIS on this project but if its anything like most publishing and distribution deals, they probably won't physically have their part of that money until March at the earliest. That doesn't specifically mean they can't leverage against those incoming assets and hire in more help, it just means that people assuming sales = money in the bank today aren't always immediately correct. -

The difference between First Gen mil grade tech and First Gen civilian knock offs is pretty wide, Power consumption is pretty heavy on cheap civilian devices compared to the ATN systems. Far as the PVS-14 and 6015-4's I'm a little behind on my tech these days, I'm surprised they were that widely available in 2003 that boot recruit was using a pair. I'll admit I haven't kept up with military grade nightvision development since before 2003 cause I've been out over ten years now. The PVS-14 and 6015-4's were extremely rare devices when I was doing my time. So I was using that as an example. I'm pretty sure whatever the top end of the tech is now is more likely to be combined optical systems rather than simple light amplification systems, and again...not exactly something they're handing out to E-Nothings playing soldier on weekend Opfor either. So take my post for the example its giving, if not for its exact chronological accuracy at least. -
Uh fixing ghosting is as simple as understanding SQL. So given that the entire point of DayZ has been that its persistence was based in Rocket hammering Arma 2 into a SQL database....I think the answer should come to him eventually. All the data he needs to actually make it impossible...he already has, so its not exactly "Rocket" science at this point....bahaha, I made a funny.

Retention - How is the Standalone going to achieve what the mod could not?

I don't think thats functionally possible without using an entire rackmount to pull it off. Not to mention the bandwidth would be somewhat insane. I definitely think its possible if someones willing to throw enough expensive hardware at the situation to make it happen, but that won't exactly be the norm. Plus even if you do throw a bunch of expensive hardware at the situation, a 3000 dollar transfer bandwidth bill monthly is pretty hard to justify without some way to monetize the endeavor...unless you're just ridiculously rich or you're managing a federal data center where no one really understands what you're doing with the hardware (which is not uncommon) so no one really notices that eighteen thousand dollars worth of tax payer bought hardware is running the most ridiculous game server on earth. So yeah I'm not saying its impossible, I'm just saying I don't see it being the status quo at all. If it could be done efficiently and cost effectively Vilayer would already be doing it and waving their collective dick in everyones face with their server numbers. Its how business is done after all...in the hosting business at least. -
Well Rocket is a Zealander, so....it stands to reason that hes probably still drunk from Xmas, or at least recovering from his massive holiday bender. Then we have New Years to get out of the way, which is another few days of alcohol induced haze....and then perhaps a couple days to recover from that. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Rocket is like...irresponsible or anything, I'm just saying hes a Zealander and its the holidays man. Try to be tolerant of other peoples cultures.

Military grade NVG's are not something I'd consider common at all...but I can find a nightvision scope and/or a small set of nightvision binoculars or even a monocular at just about any sporting good supply store I can think of off the top of my head. The technology isn't quite the same and most of these civilian devices are based off first generation nightvision technology and also tend to eat batteries like candy. So its not really accurate to say that night vision would be rare, cause cheap nightvision options are available to the civilian market that are effective and sell for less than $30 USD, now conversely the ATN-PVS7 which the Arma 2 NVG's are modeled after and is a second gen nightvision device, would not be all that common because even as old as they are, functional ones are not cheap, nor is there a huge surplus of them available on the market. Not to mention the ATN-PVS15 and 6015-4 monocular, which are current generation devices would be even less common due to their extreme rarity even amongst the military...only the highest level elite operators in JSOC run with that kind of hardware, most of the general duty military are still using Generation 2 and 3 systems. So...yeah, nightvision should be relatively accessible, just not military grade nightvision. -
They haven't got that money yet, I can guarantee that. So I wouldn't translate direct sales numbers to immediate capability. Its just not how distribution and publishing deals work.

Retention - How is the Standalone going to achieve what the mod could not?
semipr0 replied to semipr0's topic in General Discussion
Yanno I did forget to mention larger server populations. I'd definitely like to see the network architecture be more optimized for perhaps 64 - 100 player loads but given the hurdles the game has faced so far in regards to its network level stuff...I'm not sure we're ever going to get that. 40 player limits with 4 hour automatic restarts seems like its going to be a prevalent theme, from mod..to game...unfortunately. -
Ladders. If the servers lagging...using the "Climb Ladder Down" option in the context menu pitches you right off the roof. Its kinda hilarious...other than the whole death by gravity thing.
-
Hrrm that does seem a bit odd, if there were any odd back doors in the server/client or client/master server relationship in regards to this software, someone on Reddit would have ripped that wide open within hours of release. I'm not in the UK but my firewall doesn't block anything while I'm playing, so if its relevant to playing the game it might be something local to UK players. Perhaps some bean counter at DINSA thinks the software is being used to train domestic terrorists and its being monitored in the UK or something...who knows, if anything thats really not a problem with the game...its a problem with your government. Course in my case its probably just a case of the NSA being better than my firewall. In either situation, I don't suppose I much care either way.

You're not asking enough questions to get an answer really. When does this happen? When playing the game? When visiting this website/forum? While you're surfing the web for teen hentai porn?

First person only players need to band together
semipr0 replied to Dagwood's topic in General Discussion
Thats not name calling, thats attempting to be offensive and being a failure in the process. I was raised by Navy Chief's son, you really aren't ever going to compare to pure shitblistering power of them. Far as on subject goes, if I'm using my imagination to overcome this clipping glitch....I'm obviously not seeing the potential threats I'm probably prone trying to survive and/or avoid. So the whole "imagination" argument is ridiculous. I can't imagine bullets out of my face cause I couldn't see the shooters well enough to take cover out of their line of fire. -
DayZ is FailZ (Lacklustre Infected comment)

Actually I'd be happier if there were no zombies and servers could handle 100 players. I mean seriously....I know it started as a zombie survival horror game, but perhaps a survival simulation can stand on its own without fairy tale monsters to justify it? I mean....seriously, other human beings are capable far more horrific evil than any twisted creation of our imaginations will ever be. I'd trade zombies for...yanno, really scary crap, like a 350 pound dude wearing high heels and thigh high stockings and nothing else except someones intestinal tract wrapped over his chest like bandoliers and a necklace of dried human fecal matter.....who is covered in blood and has a machete and keeps calling me "Mother" as he backs me into a corner. I mean seriously, people are way scarier than zombies. I'd like to see a mainstream game grow the balls to try that level of reality on for size one of these days...til then I guess we'll continue complaining about how "not scary" our chosen fairy tale monster is. -

Nothing is more immersive than having my vision blocked while prone because an axe handle is clipping through my head and right through my field of view. So yeah...I think this lobbying group should probably wait a bit before ratcheting up to full on name calling in regards to people that don't agree with them. I mean seriously. -
I think if we all have to share the same face then yes, a beard would be most welcome. But then we'd all have the same beard. Lets face it...QOL (quality of life) content is literally going to be the very last thing on this dev teams very long list of shit to do. Until Bohemia actually throws more development power behind this project...I'm sorry, 6 guys just can't be assed to bother with things like headmeshes, hair meshes and facial hair meshes or rigging models for customizable facial hair for that matter. We've got a bargain basement dev team working on a top shelf product...unfortunately BIS kinda sees it the other way around and seems to think Arma 3 is worth more of their resources.

Why do people think there would be more civilian weapons than military?
semipr0 replied to captainvette2112's topic in General Discussion
Kind of a moot discussion since the entire point of the M4 being the main gun in the alpha is because its essentially the base framework that most other guns will derive from as the game develops. Simple facts are in three to six months finding M4's will be rarer than finding lower tier milgrade weaponry and the prevalance of civilian weaponry will be much higher than high tier milgrade hardware simply by its total volume. So, in all fairness the discussion about what should be where and whats realistic is moot. The M4 is simply their modular weapons template that they're alpha testing to ensure its functional and bug free so they can use it as the modular standard for all other modular weapons that come after it. Which I expect the AK will likely be next on the list. (and I hope they have a modular barrel for it so you can swap it up to chamber 7.62) It only makes sense to build out your most complex challenges first, and bug test them til they're stable and then worry about the less complex weapons after achieving relative perfection with the most difficult systems to implement.
