  1. Really this game is just Unreal Tournament Deathmatch. Food and blood packs are just slightly more inconvenient than running over health spawns. Weapons are just like in Unreal; you learn the map and learn where the good weapon spawns are. Zombies are just like A.I. bots, inconvenient, but not really a threat. You spawn in a starter location, and then run to spawns to improve from your starter equipment. Camo and ghillie suites are similar to power ups like camouflage and invisibility in Unreal. Sure Unreal is an extremely simplistic Deathmatch game, and doesn’t have the diversity and dynamics of a game like Battlefield, but the same can be said for DayZ. Even the old school Counterstrike mod had a more dynamic and strategic PvP element. Really DayZ is just an extremely slow paced, huge map, deathmatch game. But without the strategy and intensity of FPS games specifically designed to deliver a great deathmatch experience. I just don’t see what the real appeal is. I got extremely bored of this game a long time ago, and honestly if I was looking for a FPS PvP, DayZ is not the game I’d play. I know, to each their own. I just don’t get it. Though in defence of bandits, griefers, etcetera, I see their point; there isn’t really a whole lot to do once you get some food, drinks, and guns. Once you get geared up, what other options are there in this game? If it’s to stay in the woods and hunt, might as well play Cabalas Big Game Hunter. I don’t want DayZ to turn into WOW, despite its popularity and longevity, but there needs to be something else to do. Sandbox games are great, but if the entire playground is just sand, all the kids eventually resort to just throwing sand in each other’s faces. It just doesn’t seem like players are even given a pail and shovel so they at least have something to do with their 225 square Km of sand.
  2. I'm asking, did I miss something? Get good gear, fix a car, hoard some gear, group up, and shoot some players? What did I miss? Other than PvP there doesn’t seem to be much to do, and personally I’ve found far better games for FPS PvP. Learning the game was awesome, but once you figure the game out, there isn’t much to do. I know all games get stale eventually, and this game was worth the investment in terms of money vs. enjoyable game play. I guess my expectations of a sandbox survival game were just too high. Or I need to be more creative. I love PvP, an I couldn’t imagine playing any multiplayer game that wasn’t PvP. I’ve been playing PvP longer than many players have been alive, trust me, I have no problem dying. In fact, losing everything when you die is the one aspect of DayZ PvP i really enjoy.
  3. @Goldeen I did, 13 years ago when it was a novel concept and unique game.
  4. To the OP, the situation sort of reminds me of a George Carlin joke about fencing off parts of America for prisoners and then releasing them to attack each other, and make it a Pay Per View event. NSFW! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmJ2snsLxWw

Day Z is soon to be dead

Since these topics are appearing everywhere, I guess I’ll repost an earlier response here too: For those of you who think The War Z will be the ultimate in zombie apocalypse survival simulator you will be sadly disappointed. It’s nothing more than a War Inc mod. We all have no idea what the completed version of DayZ will be like, whether its standalone or DLC is of little consequence. The War Z will not live up to its expectations, but that’s not to say some other developer won’t, or already hasn’t started making their own unique version of DayZ. The popularity of DayZ as a mod to an outdated game hasn’t gone unnoticed by the gaming community, and the explosion of internet traffic after the announcement of The War Z has undoubtedly raised even more eyebrows. Sure, the list of features currently being propagated by The War Z are impressive, and for many survivalist their exactly what they’re looking for in such a game. Problem is The War Z will fail horribly in their execution of said promises. Obviously no one owns the idea of a zombie apocalypse survival game, and surely other developers will notice gamer’s interests in the genre and make similar games. You’ll have to be patient though, just like everyone currently playing DayZ now has to be patient for a final product. Making games takes time, and making a good or great game can take years.

Poll: DayZ or The War Z?

    What is War Z?

It’s essentially a War Inc mod.
  8. If you're going to have Holy Hand Grenades then we won't need bears, because the bunny's are about to get a lot meaner!
  9. I can’t speak for others, but the reason I started playing this game was because of the unique sandbox experience. Once I started playing I realized the infinite bugs definitely took away from the gaming experience. But I figured it’s an alpha, and it’s only a mod that’s forced to work within the limitations of the game. I’ve played through countless alpha and beta phases before, and I wasn’t really excited about toughing it through another alpha; but the unique aspect of the game kept me coming back. The problem with the game as I see it now is that it’s not really the sandbox experience I originally expected it to be. I know the game is what it is, you either like it or you don’t. The real problem is I can see the potential of this game. After reading forums, and Rockets and other comments, I’m now not excited about toughing it out of more of the alpha experience, and I have little hope about this game providing the great gaming experience I expected even in a standalone product down the road. Essentially the incredible sandbox nature of this game has devolved to avoid Z’s and shoot players, and loot what you can. The worst thing is the fact that after reading the forum and news links it’s become readily apparent that even the standalone version won’t aspire to be anything more. The only silver lining I can find out of this experience and game is that although Rocket will unlikely make DayZ what I was expecting; the popularity of this mod will likely inspire real developers to take this idea and create the unique gaming experience it can be by utilizing its true potential. The beauty of a sandbox game by its very nature is that the developers don’t create a game that holds a players hand. The game is what the player makes it. The only limitations put on the game are those within its mechanics and the players own creativity. Essentially it’s the developers roll to provide all the necessary in game tools so the player can achieve the gaming experience they desire. I just don’t see this happening with DayZ. But there are a lot of creative people out there with the financial backing to make this happen. DayZ will incite inspiration in other developers and they will expand upon this idea, and this will hopefully create an entire new genre of games in the future.

    Day Z Urban Legends

I had this happen to me. Something kept saying “I see you.” And even with 7.1 surround sound I couldn’t tell from which direction. Every once in while there were a few thuds too, like someone was moving nearby, but louder. After another “I see you” I stopped moving and thought I saw something in the trees, so against better instincts I turned on my flashlight, and expected to have some player or Z get me for my trouble. Nothing happened, just me and the trees. So I started moving around in a slow crouch and turning my flashlight on, scan the immediate area, and turn it off again. Then I heard another “I see you” and went prone in the grass and listened. After another “I see you” I opened direct chat and said “okay, games over, just shoot me already.” I figured it was a player messing with me. After I said this I noticed there were an insane amount of Z`s around me, I was in the middle of nowhere. There is no spawn location anywhere near me. Seriously, there must have been 40-50 Z`s in a 50m x 50m patch of forest around me. It started pouring rain really hard, I figured F this, I`ll make a run for it, I didn`t have any real loot to lose. None of the Z`s even gave chase. But I heard some more loud thuds around me as I ran for my life. Edit: Okay, after going through the whole post I see there’s video evidence of this now. Though I remember my “I see you” was a lot quieter, and with no static. I remember having to turn up my audio just to find out if I was hearing things or not.
  11. I agree. The beauty of sandbox games it to play them the way you want. Unfortunately at the moment I’m forced to KoS because of the limitations of the game. Don’t get me wrong, I love PvP, but I was hoping I could play this as a survivor, and hopefully with other people too. It’s extremely difficult to make friends in this game, and I only group with people I know in real life. I played Ultima Online all the way back in Beta; it was an MMO PvP game where death insured your body was looted clean on every death. But even in Beta you could go to towns where PvP wasn’t allowed so you could form alliances with like minded individuals. Also bandits were given red names not black names so you could differentiate between them. The reason bandits love KoS is because it gives them a huge advantage over the survivor population. Especially in a game where there is no visual way to distinguish friend, foe, or even neutral players. Bandits KoS, survivors give the benefit of the doubt, which works in the bandits favor. Hesitation equals death. Bandits don’t want to be flagged because it would create an equal playing field. Trust me, if bandits were flagged as such they would experience far more deaths by PvP. Survivors would now have the benefit of enjoying KoS as well. This is obviously not what the bandits want. The fact that there are still players out there that attempt to even play as survivors speaks volumes about the nature of man, and I commend you. This game does everything it can to punish such behaviour and game play, yet you persist. So I guess if Z Day ever happened, humanity might have a chance. ;)
  12. This was brought up in the forum: http://dayzmod.com/f...-among-players/ I agree. With the game as it currently is, is KoS rampant. There are many factors that have created this culture. One aspect I touched on below: Yes paranoia in a zombie apocalypse is healthy mental state, but there are real world applications to wearing distinctive clothing. Why do you think street and biker gangs wear distinctive colors and insignias? Why do you think every military in the world has distinctive camouflage patterns used for different terrains that are distinctive from other militaries? The answer, friendly fire. There are two situations that make this a worldwide practice used by every military and non-military organization in the world that engages in armed combat. First, to be distinguished on sight as friend or foe, hesitation gets you killed. The second reason is less apparent unless you’ve actually been in the shit. When shit goes down, it’s insane and chaotic, without visual distinction you’re just as likely to shoot friend as you are foe. This is authentic to the real world, and arguing that everyone should always look the same wouldn’t even be practical in a zombie apocalypse. If you’re with a small or large band, clan, gang, etcetera, you want to be able to distinguish each other from other people for the two reasons listed above. And considering this is a game where facial recognition isn’t possible, I believe that some other form of distinction is not only authentic, but a requirement.
  13. Once Z’s are fixed, so they don’t have ESP, crazy zigzag running, the ability to phase shift, and respawn almost instantly; I’d say this would be a must have addition to the game. As the game is right now, I think zombie behaviours and glitches ruin the game, and adding more of them would only make the gaming experience less enjoyable.

  15. 1.7.2.3 1) Spawn rates and distances. I love the stealth aspect of the game, and I realize shooting a firearm around zombies should draw their attention. But, I’ve been less than 20m from a house and had 5 Z’s suddenly spawn out of the door in front of me. And, there should be an option to drop all the Z’s in an immediate area without a continuous loop of spawning Z’s. The biggest breaker of game immersion for me, and the reason I may not play this mod again until it’s a real game. I could see more Z’s running from further areas within the city to investigate, but 3 new Z’s spawning under a tree stand before you can get down the ladder is ridiculous. 2) Z’s pathing and speed. It’s impossible to shoot a Z on the run, and thanks to their lightning speed, you don’t get many opportunities for a second chance. The only thing that slows them is their attack animation. Head shots are a zombie staple in all media genres, yet these Z’s need to be in their attack animation, or the first shot outside of their alert range to execute a head shot. Again, I enjoy stealth based games, but the option to stand and fight should be available, they're Z’s not armed super soldiers. I realize pathing is an Arma issue, but the Z’s running speed is mod controlled. 3) The random glitch where Z’s have extra sensory perception. I was in a building, looting a stash for about a minute, unmoving, when a crawler opened a door to attack me. There were no windows on this industrial building too. I had been in the building for about 3 minutes straight, and I even entered using a different entrance. Obviously there are many examples of this happening in the open, but this incident disturbed me. I only crouch walk in buildings, so I’m always slow and quiet too. 4) Can’t enter buildings while prone, and sometimes barely at all. Good luck fixing that broken leg if you can’t get into a building to loot morphine. This is a game breaking mechanic. Not to mention, thanks to having to crouch just to enter a building, I make myself visible to all the Z’s I just spent 10 minutes sneaking past. 5) Z’s extra sensory perception part two. Shooting one rifle shot from 400m brings an army of Z’s right to you, regardless of terrain or cover. Snipers and hunters know that it’s the second shot that usually gives away your relative position. Z’s sprint straight at you and thanks to their uncanny ability to find you, even guerilla hit and run tactics don’t work on Z’s. This tactic works well on superior forces in real military operations, but not on unarmed, half dead Z’s. A full on zigzag sprint right to your location is insane; some half speed investigation mode should be implemented. Not that shooting Z’s is worth it, since they respawn so quickly it’s utterly pointless. Sorry for so much negative feedback about a game I really enjoyed playing. But the romance period has worn off for me. Now all the glitches become far more bothersome than before. I’ve never complained about losing all my gear to server loading or update issues, or even just because I put on a ghillie suite. Which, in most games would be infuriating, but I realize it’s an alpha. But many of the issues stated above have persisted in some form or another for a considerable amount of time. If Rocket ever get’s the stand alone game made that he so desperately wants I’ll be eagerly awaiting the reviews of his game before hopefully positive feedback encourages me to buy an enjoyable completed product. I’ve alpha and beta tested before, and with a half million testers now playing the game, I’m guilt free to leave the testing to others so I can enjoy other games. Good luck and I can’t wait for DayZ the game.

Character death should carry more weight

@Iceman28001 You had the right approach, make an even more ridiculous suggestion than the OP. So funny, I should have used humor in my response too. Much better than being serious and a sourpuss about a bad topic. Thanks for the laugh.

    Regenerating blood

I think a self administered blood pack for even 1000-2000 blood seams fair. With no real communication in game, having a friend can be impossible for many players. Also, I think drinks should replenish blood for 50-100 too. Sure with a canteen you could spam drink, but filling them 50 times to replenish 2500-5000 blood would take forever. Or possibly put a time limit on how often you can refill a canteen. Visiting watering holes are generally considered a preys most vulnerable moments of the day. I don't know about you, but a guy hunched over water or a well for 5 minutes seems vulnerable to me. It could easily be argued that it's fluid replenishment not food that restores plasma levels in a human. The only problem with blood over time that I have is, it takes away from the risk-reward aspect of finding loot in the game, and keeping it. Using items seems more inductive to the survivalist aspect of the game. I don't want the game to become too easy, but some way to heal more effectively would mean getting injured isn't a slow dwindling death sentence. I can't be the only one who spawns only to instantly pull three Zee's and finds themselves at half blood before you can even react. When this happens, I respawn. The game is difficult enough from the start, and being half dead early in the game is usually more trouble than it's worth. Sure bandages are plentiful, but replacing blood can be difficult at times. You need to find a skinning knife, wood, matches, and an animal just to replace blood. And possibly a bigger pack just to hold it all, two inventory slots for wood hurts. Oddly enough, there are many times where one of these things just can't be found for some reason. Cans of food are too scarce and replace far too little blood to be a feasible option for healing.

Character death should carry more weight

Carry more weight, like dying and losing everything, and having to start all over from a spawn point Km away? That sounds hardcore to me, good idea! Seriously though, waiting after you die is ridiculous. It's a game, you play it for entrainment value, sitting and doing nothing isn't fun. I'd just alt-tab out of the game, watch some TV or surf the net until it was time to play again. And if I had to do that, I'd find another game to play. If it's realism you want, you realise once you die you're dead right? So each player should only get one life then you're banned from all severs for life if you die once. Now that's hardcore! Sorry if I seem sarcastic, I'm usually a positive guy, but the OP's suggestion is ridiculous.
  19. I almost consider it a fail if I actually have to shoot a Zee (I'm Canadian, Zed sounds weird). All my ammo is for players, and the odd Zee that shows up after the shooting begins. To me this game is stealth based, and you only shoot if you absolutely have too. If you're patient and smart, you don't use much ammo anyway. Still, I like to horde it just in case, you never know. With Zee respawn rates, shooting them seems pointless. If you could actually wipe them out, even for a while, that would be a different story.

    Best sidearm?

1911, best gun in the game for stopping power, volume, and number of rounds. Funny how a military sim could be so accurate. The 1911 is my favorite pistol to fire in real life, and in DayZ too.

IF this was an actual game...

I bought Combined Op's and PMC just for this mod, and couldn't be happier. Spent $40 on a game that I've spent countless hours playing, meanwhile there are thousands of $60 plus games on the market with 6-12 hours of single player content, and horrible tacked on multiplayer that isn't even worth finding a match for. When I buy a game I only really consider enjoyment factor, and hours of entertainment to dollars spent on the game. Standalone with DLC later to prolong game life and revenue works, but certain publishers have abused this practice, and the gamer community is bitter to this practice. Having it as DLC on Arma 3 works fine for me, they should provide a great backbone for your game. With a standalone game, dedicated persistent servers cost money, possibly a lower initial cost with a very minimal monthly subscription cost would work. Again, not a huge fan of a monthly subscription fee, and it would likely keep some people away. A Minecraft model would work as well, I'd pay to play in Beta. I sort of paid to play in Alpha, and I'm happy. A Kickstarter, Wasteland 2 model would work as well. I know I'd donate for a copy of the game. F2P sucks. Obviously making it DLC for Arma 3 would require less resources, time, and personal to make. Standalone would probably require a developer, unless a Kickstarter, or possibly a Minecraft model worked out really well initially. Which it probably would. Being backed by a big Developer and Publisher does increase the likelihood of creating a unique gaming experience, and the popularity of this mod ensures they'll back your game. Honestly it doesn't matter to me how it gets made, as long as you have complete control over your product. What you've done with this mod is unbelievable, and I would hate for some external force like EA to get involved and destroy what could have been. From your posts that I've read it's obvious you're a great guy, and a gamer who created a mod for the love of the game. It wasn't about money, but you now have the rare opportunity to possibly make a living doing something you love, and deserve it. As long as you have creative control, we the gamers, who love gaming, we'll all win.
  22. Zombies only scare new players unfamiliar with game mechanics and/or controls. Once you're familliar with the game, I think most would agree that Z's more often than not become a source of amusement, not terror. It sure would encourage the probability of team work. Though, it could also just encourage team PvP, and even with tougher Z's they would still become relatively harmless to larger groups. Still team PvP is still more social than lone snipers. I guess it depends on what the developers want their game to be, small or larger scale PvP. Though I wouldn't complain with tougher Z's. I played Ultima Online at beta, so I love high risk, high reward PvP.
  23. So your solution for snipers is to add more snipers? Umm...

    suggestion: starter packs

The vest pouch should be removed, just a waste of an item. Crowbar is not an OP starter too.
