What I learnt from DayZ: joe public has zero understanding of mental health
duddbudda posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
there are a half dozen threads on the front page of the suggestion forum discussing a mechanic simulating the insanity of players who commit murder common statements include: - murderers are insane - insane people are murderers - psychopathy/sociopathy is insane - sadism is insane - insane people cannot control themselves - ***it is possible to determine a person's mental health by superficial tells*** these are extreme generalisations, but they are made often and without question by a good number of posters here particularly concerning is the last point, highlighted with asterisks, given that it is raised so regularly and could be incredibly damaging if acted upon Mental health is a sensitive subject and, given the intangibility of the field and concomitant paucity of public understanding, it is forgivable that so many stereotypes and generalisations exist. I'm posting this as a warning: forumeers, please, take a moment and consider your assumptions and as a request: Rocket, please, do not implement any mechanic that ajudicates players' mental health, it is not a subject that can safely be tackled by a game like DayZ -

duddbudda replied to duddbudda's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
oh, the OP was a response to the common 'implement an insanity mechanic to punish PvP' suggestion OP changed to make this clearer -
the majority can be wrong not nearly so crass as a system wherein the only insane people are murderers who aught be killed to make oneself more sane

game is not and has never been a deathmatch, see sig or do the sums yourself at dayzmod.com (and no, there are no beach respawns to affect the outcome, because only lives over two minutes are counted)

DayZ should become a stand alone game using a different engine.
duddbudda replied to Harris (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
no, the elephant in the room is the netcode the creation engine is fine and dandy for one person, but for two? nope. why do you think the Elder Scrolls mmo is being built on the SWTOR engine? CE3 (in Aion) doesn't sync as many things or to even remotely similar resolution as ARMA (Aion needs facing and a bunch of binary states to do realtime), nor does Aion's CE3 contain the entire map in a single instance -
thermal will be OP when I can rend the gorram L85 to bits and stick the thermal on my mk48 until then it's a great telescope, but it takes up a lot of room for clarity: 5.56 NATO has turrible stopping power in ARMA (I myself was hit six times at 200m by an m4 and ran off with 2600 blood) at 800m (the kind of range that scope's intense zoom is practical at) it takes three or four body shots to kill using 7.62, which has nearly twice the energy out the muzzle - at 800m it'll be closer to thrice then there's the muzzle lift - the L85's jump is huge, and made worse by that mad zoom as ZDB said, it's a scouting tool, let the M107 take the shot

I don't know how effective mines will be for warding off fishermen oh wait, do you mean the instrument? why on earth would anyone lug around a bass in an electricity-less apocalypse

If Day Z Had a New Engine, What Would You Want to See?

I'd like them to build DayZ on an engine fueled by fools -
Possible cheat or admin abuse?
duddbudda replied to Dimedius (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
3rd person can be exploited by anyone (seeing without being seen) potentially the admins decided to make their combat easier probably not, if they're running a vet server, they probably know how to make 1st work for them and you say 'within hours' so like, pretty tenuous and then the three separate teams, like wut? how's the admin sposed to track them all down and get them boatmurdered? -
not for those who can be arsed to scout because the interesting answer to snipers is work out how to deal with them, if they snipe you when you're looking for them then you're doing it wrong, if you don't want to worry about snipers then don't, but you can't complain when they kill you Off Topic observation: you can tell the people who've never played strategy games (or tried to code a thing, or do a calculus, or solve many problematic problems [gaming site gets gaming analogy]) because they look at impossible situations and don't even try for solutions - you just know they've never had twenty turns to break the Drengin's hold on an ascension crystal, never reverted to mass marines in the face of a dozen BCs (inb4 marines OP), never even heard of Panzer General
-
I, and everyone who has played DayZ, acknowledges the truth of your observation, so explain why it matters? why should there be precisely as many people running around at night as there are during the day?
-
so what if it fits your suggestion? it fits the current model perfectly what on earth gave you that idea? I haven't said, or thought, anything hypothesisng about a 'DayZ is real' scenario indeed, a minority do do so, and probably have done so (for various reasons) through human history in DayZ that minority is represented, why should the game turn things on their head? just to be clear, I have fixed that for you completely unrelated topics, particularly irrelevant when the discussion doesn't even consider mechanical conceits like carry capacity or stamina, instead focusing on environmental/atmospheric authenticity and their impact on the game it's not worth investigating, because it doesn't matter why people don't play on night servers, the key consideration being that this is a legitimate behaviour for a diurnal mammal you suggested a thing, didn't give any real reasons for it ('because I've seen empty night servers' is not a reason, that's an observation; argue why night time play aught be enforced. 'reduce server hopping to the people that want to play with buddies and double looters' is a complete non sequitur and is also unreasoned), and you have not once, anywhere in this thread, given a single coherent reason for forcing night time play on anyone, let alone everyone. Truth is, noone can argue for enforced night play, because it is a senseless idea, no matter how elegant your mechanic for implementing it might appear
-
@yogscat I'm not saying noone, I'm saying not many not many being the number we have now - because people have the choice (just as they do irl) when to be active, they choose to be active during the day (when y'know, they can see and shit) just as we have done, by and large, for several hundred thousand years why should a game striving for authenticity force its inhabitants to observe unnatural activity cycles?
-
I love it PvP butthurt thread gets 46, largely assenting, responses in two hours then ZDB puts the whingers in their place and though none can rebut him, noone has to decency to admit their mistake or thank him for his wisdom kudos on trying ZDB, your patient perseverance does you credit

you couldn't be more wrong - servers that do this are more likely to keep everyone on the same time - ARMA's time system is designed for simultaneous start missions, so clients are told 'the time is XXXX hours' when they log in and each counts their own time in dayz that means I can join at 6pm, play for three hours, keep playing through evening into the pitch dark and get killed by a recently joined player who's living in the lovely and bright land of 6pm by restarting every few hours, servers ensure that everyone is on roughly the same time my tribe's most commonly played server reboots at 8am, 2pm, 8pm and 2am, meaning it's always a time-appropriate environment for everyone - servers can be told to update their time from the system clock, the only servers I know that have 'we will auto reboot in intervals of X' do this - to be clear, I have never been on an auto rebooting server, in 300 hours of DayZ, that reboots so it can avoid nighttime as for OP's suggestion, hells no lock all timezones to one clock = bad, even with the caveat 'but time is faster' because faster time is gorram idiotic also, because nighttime is nighttime and we diurnal creatures, so why the hump should there be dozens of people running around Chernarus at night? Low player count, whatever the reason for it, aught be expected at night because humans gorram sleep then

that means NPCs are zeds. period.

the anger in this thread delivers and feeds on misinformation and anecdotal fearmongering

seawater is salty, sandy and fully of all sorts of shiiieeeeet any mechanical part that requires any kind of lubrication (guns and car parts) is gonna demand a heck of a lot of effort to be made servicable - a gas-operated rifle that's been in the drink is gonna be a liability without hours of maintenance so yeah, I like the idea of some flotsam beans, but any weapons or car parts coming out the sea will be DOA -
