I ran across half the map to get morphine for my friend on like my 3rd day playing. It was: Fun as shit, intense as shit, and I ended up saving him. Your backpack takes like 1-3 minutes to save contents, so you probably put the dmr in pack and logged off before it saved, hence it remembered there being an l85 in there

Still not a server restart, chopper crashed. Even if it had been a restart it could delete it, put it back to any of its save points. Check where you found or saved it, not there then just move on.
