    Loot spawning is too formulaic

I would prefer a World of Warcraft style loot system In WoW, certain enemies in certain areas have x% to drop something, but they almost all have the same chance to drop something from the same loot table. In DayZ that would translate to loot zones having a set % chance to generate something from the loot table anywhere in the loot zone. That would be my preference at any rate.
  2. Most of the "I'm only doing KoS" threads have been from kids, or at least from people who seem to think like kids. "Oh my God, I had a bad experience so I'm only going to act this way because I want to avoid that bad experience at all costs; even though logic and reasoning would dictate that I can mitigate most risks and make more nuanced decisions, but that would be hard so I'm just going to KoS." It's the same reaction you get from a kid, or a dog that was beaten once too many times. Now whether or not the attempt at black and white reasoning is right or wrong depends on whether it improves the player's (the player who is doing the KoS) experience or makes that experience worse. That's my opinion on it any way. Most people will look at what risks they are or are not willing to take, and will act accordingly. Deity's decision to shoot new spawns that are running for him is one of those risk management decisions that most players make in DayZ.

    Cannibalism

I was referring to the absurdity of people trying to shoehorn the negative extremes of human interaction into the game. Orlok, I apologize if I did not make that clear. I keep on seeing these things brought up. That people will every so often express a desire to be allowed to engage in extremes of human behavior with the justification being about needing these measures to express the true desperation of survival, or the freedom to do as they please in a game about the human condition. I really think that those players are missing the point of the game. Every time I've heard rocket talk about this game it has been in the context of allowing people to create their own stories through interaction with other players. Things like cannibalism, rape, STDs, torture, and the other negative extremes of human behavior do not add anything to this idea. If anything they are like a shock-jock on a radio station. The first time you hear them you are shocked and appalled, the second time you roll your eyes, and the third time you don't even notice. This not only renders these extremes of human behavior ineffective for allowing people to create interesting stories, but these negative extremes of behavior also directly take away and distract from other potentially more interesting avenues of human interaction. I would rather see development time, effort, and creativity being devoted to more novel and interesting means of interaction than simply investing in the shock value of these ultimately shallow ideas.

    Cannibalism

This game needs cannibalism like it needs rape and STDs. The game also clearly needs to allow players to castrate their victims, allow people to get pregnant, and to then eat the fetus. Why? Because we want to indulge in these extreme behaviors out of some morbid curiosity that must be satisfied even if it comes at the expense of the overall game.

    Reduce fall damage

I'm pretty sure that the fall damage model in DayZ is a place holder until they perform some serious coding. This strikes me as something that the Arma 2 engine was never designed for, and it will probably require a lot of coding to implement a satisfactory solution.

To quote Franchi: " There is no reason mechanical technology would roll back at all." That facility would fall apart and decay extraordinarily quickly due to 3 big things: 1 - Everybody is going to want a piece of that facility, and people may decide that if they can't have access to those resources then no one can (this has happened a lot in history). 2 - No one is producing replacement parts for those lathes, and there does not appear to be all that much in the way of easy methods to machine parts for those lathes in Chernhaus. 3 - No readily available electricity in the large amounts necessary to power that equipment. With those three things in mind, I would say that the ability to use and maintain complex machines would disappear quickly. People would very quickly be reduced to very basic technology until enough time had gone by for people organize, begin setting up resource collecting operations (mining, wood-cutting, metallurgy, etc...), and to begin producing more complex things. Edit: also, why the hell is the quote feature not working for me?

    Some thoughts for the future

I could see this working, but only if there was an indication that an object might be infected. Something like a "blood-soaked" status for an item. So, a corpse might have a pair of hunter's pant on them, but because they were shot it now has the blood-soaked status (e.g. blood-soaked hunter's pants). Which means that wearing that item gives you a 50% chance to become infected with a disease.

    Gamma exploit

I think it's a bug. I can still change my gamma and brightness just fine, but a friend I play with will spawn into a night server and be able to see nothing but blackness. Also, I agree with Frosti that there is no reason to handicap yourself in a game like Dayz. The game is about survival, and allowing yourself to be handicapped like that is just silly. It then goes to the point of: if the game allows you to do it, then you do it. Edit: so the only reason to not use the exploit is to test the night cycle, and to provide feedback on it.

It looks like Rocket want to simulate the natural progression of technology after a catastrophic failure in society. First, people will start with high-technology, because it is still in relatively good shape and people can still find parts to maintain what they have. Second, people will start running out of resource to maintain their technology as the corporate infrastructure that produced the parts on the scale necessary for society no longer exists, and the transportation networks are no longer being maintained. This means that technology will become rare, and it will be difficult to take care of. In this period, we would see a lot of tech being lost, and a lot of older much more basic items being used (bows, blades, etc...) Third, there will a resurgence in basic mechanical technologies as people learn how to make things (e.g. how to use basic tools to make complex items), and certain pieces of technology will begin to come back (basic homemade guns, radios, etc...). This is one reason that I would like to see Rocket take Dayz into a Metro 2033 direction in terms of resources, technology, and crafting.

Stay away from the shotgun(s), here is why.

If you have a mosin, then you use a pistol when you get into cqc. The magnum and the FNX45 are vastly superior to the shotgun. Again, the only reason to use the shotgun (or the sawed off shotgun) is because you have nothing else.

Stay away from the shotgun(s), here is why.

No you don't. You can carry one pistol, and one long gun. If you have anything better (mosin, m4) then you carry those. Only a fool, someone looking for a challenge, or someone who spends all of their time in a cqc environment would bother with a shotgun as a primary.

Stay away from the shotgun(s), here is why.

The shotgun is only useful if you have nothing else.

Losing all items when leaving the game?

Yeah, I've been experiencing this as well. I hit the small airfield this afternoon on my lunch break today, and when I logged in later my character had been reset. So, I logged into a server and immediately went and looted a few small meaningless items. I then logged out, and immediately logged into the same server only to find that the character had been reset again.
  14. Just wanted to post in here to mention that my character is continuously reset. Every server I join: new character. Join a server I was playing on yesterday: new character. Join a server I was playing on 10 minutes ago: new character. Log onto a server only to immediately leave, and then rejoin: new character. One thing that I have noticed is that there are times where my character will seem to spawn in the right place, but will then immediately spawn on the beach. I tested this by joining a server, going into a couple of buildings to pick up a few objects, and then leaving and rejoining immediately only to find that the character was always being reset.

    Rag tag Musty Vigilantes

    You sir, are a boss.
  16. I'm getting tired of these posts. The idea behind this only applies to the vacuum scenario DayZ presents to us: being stuck on a hostile island with a bunch of strangers and a bunch of guns. In the real world, guess what? You know people. Guess what else? In the real world, you're a wimp who doesn't pick fights if you can avoid it. People would get into fights, but that would always be tempered by two things: you know each other, and you have a common enemy. The best example of this is the death camps in World War 2. Yes, you had people stampeding each other for a mouthful of bread, but just as quickly turning to work together to avoid being dragged off to face a machine gun firing squad. Really, the only people who got truly left behind were those who were too physically weak to help themselves. The people who suggest that in an extreme survival situation, we would see anything like DayZ are talking out of their asses. Look at history, look at what people have done when faced with extreme starvation and death. They will fight, but they will just as often come together to comfort each other and survive.

    Ruining ARMA 2?

I'll tell you this then, you've wasted your time writing this post, and made yourself a very nice target for anyone out there who wants to enlarge their e-peen. to that end, I will tell you to do as many others do. Watch the forums for any developments that interest you, try to remain in the discussion if you care where the game is going, and go play another game that you find enjoyable.

    Simple solution to disconnect exploit

I can see this as a problem, and I have not personally DC'd in the middle of a firefight (although if I hear near by shots I may decide that it it time to turn in for the night :P). However, my biggest concern is that a good number of the solutions I've seen kicked around have the potential to catch more than just the desired audience.

Why no bandit skin could work

If he is taking out the bandit skins, then he may as well remove the humanity meter. Unless he finds a new purpose for it, then it is a pointless addition. I'm actually somewhat sad to see the bandit skins go, as survival itself is easy except for the other players. Without even a basic way of knowing someone's reputation, i have no reason to interact with other players beyond shooting them.

    DayZ and Basic Human Nature

I find my conscience does not have an on/off switch. I find the idea of ruining another's game play, or attempts to just gun down people in-game for sport to be... off-putting. Being a dick in-game just doesn't feel right to me. So, I just play to survive. Which just means I avoid others like the plague, only returning fire in self defense.

    Empty Cans/ Bottles useful?

As BobDa said, they can be used to draw the attention of zombies away from you or a place you want to go. For that reason, I usually carry an empty bottle or can with me at all times. On a side note, smoke grenades also have this effect, but are also useful for hiding from and disorienting other players.
