So... the average life expectancy just went to 0:00
Rec0n412 posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
How the hell did that happen? did the server statistics get corrupted or something? Did everyone decide to go into a suicide pact and all off themselves at the same time? What caused this? -
It can only be growing too fast if the positive aspects of its increased publicity begin to be outweighed by negative aspects. So far, I've seen very few negative aspects to go along with this rise in popularity.

The Official Unofficial Bandit Removal Petition
Rec0n412 replied to The Killing Joke's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The problem with a free form, no constraints setup is that there are no means to encourage player cooperation beyond artificial constraints. Life, is meaningless in a video game. If you die, you are merely inconvenienced by a respawn. Gear is not hard to get in this game, zombies are not hard to avoid. Until more content gets added to the game, that requires some degree pf player cooperation, then there is never going to be a reason to cooperate with another survivor. Again, this being a video game, the only way to get people to cooperate on any sustainable level is either with content that requires cooperation, or with artificial constraints. -
Near a dock by the coast, I went prone next to a concrete wall and promptly had a zombie start beating me bloody through the wall. That is all.

I would support this as an option, but not as the norm.

Why are the map name in english if the sign names are in cyrilic?

Why? I would think that the local maps would be in cyrilic, and it would make it easier to match the sign names up to the map names :P -
Non lethal, poison, blood tapping, IED's
Rec0n412 replied to Zero477's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
1. Engine limitations. 2. You sir, are a sadistic bastard. -
I've seen others do the same with a nice rifle or some other nice weapon(even just basic equipment), leaving it in the middle of road by a spawn. Poor noobs, never even saw what was coming for them. I've managed to avoid this by being very wary of gear that is in a location where it would not normally spawn.

As is, there is nothing in game to encourage people to cooperate. The only thing that can be added would be artificial constraints, considering that life is valueless in a video game, and that the zombies are all very easily circumvented. In the end, any cooperative elements are always going to be of an artificial nature when placed in a video game.

Happy birthday, and may you enjoy many more!

[Rangers] "Rangers lead the way" (US based)
Rec0n412 replied to -Rangers-Apollo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'll definitely drop in, sounds like a pretty cool group that has got their act together. -
This, so very much this.

I have to admit, this is why I've never taken the time to use the crossbow. For all of the advantages, there are more disadvantages. The biggest of which is the simple lack of ammo. I usually travel light on ammo, taking only two or three clips so as to allow me more flexibility with regard to load-out and the like. If this is the intent, that the crossbow be used as a hard-core, stealth sort of weapon... then I'm glad that there is such a plethora of other weapons to use.

Proposed Benefit for not killing other players
Rec0n412 replied to penguinacity's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
-Better gear -Guarantee that if the other guy is dead, you will not be shot -Thrill of the hunt -Supplies(if the better gear part does not apply) -Bait, to lure in other survivors who want to check the body for loot As of now there is no reason to not kill other players. In fact the general rule of thumb is to shoot first and worry about it later. I have to admit that I would like to see tools for players to organize themselves to some degree. I would also like to see things for people to work towards besides building exceedingly fragile vehicles, and the occasional helicopter. I imagine these things will be added later, but as of now there is nothing to do in this game besides finding food, finding water, and killing other players. Therefore, we wait. -
I love the mod. it is a unique experience, and one that is very memorable compared to almost all other games. I still wish I could side step through doors :D
-
I agree with this to a point, but I feel that NVG's should still be some what rare. Considering that those are kinda fragile and all. However, I would think that flashlights would be more prevalent than they are.

What would you guys think of being able to create persistent groups that allow you to identify people in your group? The simplest thing I could see would be essentially a list of player names, which would be kept under a group name. So, i guess in programming this would be like a queue(C++ term) that is given a variable name. Then, all players within that queue are given an arm band so they can recognize each other from a distance. In the beginning, i would think that this arm-band would only be able to be seen by people within the group(for simplicity sake). Then later on people could select from an assortment of arm-bands that would remain the identifying feature of their group. I also see this as adding some more group/cooperative elements to the game, or just being a jumping off point for these elements. let me know what you guys think, and in what ways this idea could be improved/fleshed out.

If this were an actual game, being sold as a separate item for another game(DLC in short), I would be willing to pay a one time fee. Paying a monthly subscription in my mind would not be worth it. I don't mean to sound entitled or anything by that remark, but this is essentially hard-core fallout 3 with more zombies than normal. Which is not something I would pay 5, or 10 dollars a month for over any substantial period of time.
