Looking for a Server/Person to help a new player
GeeksterDayZ replied to Charlieraf's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I gave two people a 4-hour gaming tour last night, got them all kinds of gear and they seemed to really enjoy it. If you want to meet up I will be playing from now onward today, let me know :) -
You can wake someone up when they are unconscious, go near them and use an EpiPen (basically an adrenaline shot to the heart). If they are DEAD, then they are dead. And probably dead because 1) their brains were blown out by a gun, or 2) their internal organs are now inside a zombie instead of the player :P

Befriending the dogs in DayZ
GeeksterDayZ replied to Nighthunter (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Rocket does plan to have dogs as companions in DayZ at some point in the future :) -
Tonight as a result of my posts here I am approached by a newbie to the game who is struggling to ask for a quick 'tour' of the game. Great! So we met up in-game quite quickly & easily (moreso than my friends manage to!) under the crane in Cherno. I give him some basic instructions (controls, text chat as he has no mic, etc). We loot the building, when on the top floor we are text-chatted to by another player.. "Damn" I thought. "We're gonna get killed, and we'll spend ages trying to meet up again now..." BUT quite the contrary - he happened to be another 1st-time player too! I invited him along for the tour, and off the 3 of us went. I showed them around the nearest farm to Cherno to get some supplies, showed them how to kill & cook meat, then headed for the gas station. We ran into some zombies, but with teamwork we took them all down quite easily! Needing blood, I moved us on to the hospital. Now, I knew this was risky, and that we would quite likely perish there, but what they hey, it would be a learning experience if nothing else. So we arrive at the hospital, and it looks quite deserted despite there are 35+ players on the server somewhere. I text-announce to anyone nearby that I am introducing these 2 guys to the game, so PLEASE leave us be, we won't harm anyone etc. We raided the hospital, all the apartment blocks, got tons of blood, morphine, guns, ammo, bandages, food, watches, toolkit, knives.... it was AWEsome. I suggested we high-tail it out of there as this point, as we had likely been VERY lucky so far! We head off to the hills, where the original 'newb' left us, with a fond farewell and thanks. The 2nd newb and I carried on back to the gas station, and then to the barn. I saved and logged out, but was sad to hear that a few seconds later someone with a hatchet claiming to be friendly killed my 2nd newb :( Still, I pointed out that they shouldn't trust anyone, and they know that now! So overall, 2 new friends on STEAM who were great fun to play 4+ hours with, lots of lovely new gear for when I'm on next, a safe place to spawn and a great feeling that I have helped 2 people discover how awesome staying alive in DayZ can be. :) :) :)

There are two 'endgames' to DayZ - you die now, or you die later. Really, that's how it should be. There are no 'boss battles', no story modes, no scripted sequences for a reason - YOU make the story. It's not an arcade game, it's not going to reward you for looting loads of items any further than *having* those items. I love that the game doesn't spoon-feed you 'achievements' and bonuses all over the place, its a return to what gaming should be - enjoyment of the game, not of something flashy and and 'ending' to pat you on the back and say "well done".
-
You don't spawn with a weapon, that was taken away ages ago. If you are shaking in first person view it means you need to take painkillers as you are in shock, or pain. Once you pick up the hatchet, open the inventory by pressing G, right-click on the hatchet and choose "remove from toolbelt". You will then have to click the mouse wheel to 'reload' the hatchet. click left mouse button to swing!

I'm hearing a lot of negative feedback.

I believe that the zombie detection stuff has been fixed, at least partially, by 1.7.2.2 earlier today :) -
Can this PC run dayz on high settings?
GeeksterDayZ replied to Blurbs's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes that'll run Arma II and therefor DayZ on high settings. Alienware is a total ripoff though, I spec'd up a PC from that range and then got the parts & built it myself for almost half the cost. Still, if you have money to throw at Dell then by all means do it :) -
DayZ takes a long time to learn how to play 'properly'. Those vids on youtube are from people who know where the high-value buildings are with the good loot. They recorded hours and hours of footage and then edit it down to 12 awesome minutes. Fact #1: Most of DayZ is spent walking, in fields, along roads, through forests. Get used to it, enjoy the scenery. Fact #2: You won't overnight become a 'good' player at this game. Sometimes you get lucky, most of the time you get dead. Fact #3: Speaking of dead, you will die. A LOT. Don't get attached to your gear, you WILL lose it, either to a bug, server crash, zombie or another player. If you want some in-game help I am happy to guide newbies to help them out, send me a DM (or post below) and we'll arrange a time to meet up in-game.

No, and it would be a stupid idea. Everyone's monitors / TV's are differernt and people prefer (or in my case, need!) different levels to suit their eyesight, comfort levels etc. Even if they locked the in-game options you can simply adjust the actual options for the monitor / TV you are using!

Can't load, wrong version, This is ridiculous please help
GeeksterDayZ replied to MagicalSkyWorm's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
1) Open Steam and using the Properties of ArmA II and ArmA II: OA go to Local Files and Verify Integrity. It'll download any files that are missing or damaged. 2) Close Steam, right-click the icon for it on your desktop and "Run As Administrator" 3) Run Arma II through to the main menu, then quit out 4) Run ArmA II: OA through to the main menu, then quit out 5) Run Arma: II Combined Ops through to the main menu, then quit out 6) Run SixUpdater and let it do the speed test etc. Exit when done 7) Run SixLauncher, click on "Verify", find a server with a ping less than 200, join the game 8) Wait! It might take several minutes to get through to an actual playable state :) -
When you log out, make sure you do it by pressing escape to bring up the menu, then go to "Abort" at the bottom, then disconnect. This will make sure your character is saved. Try and only play on up-to-date servers too, the out-of-date ones might not receive your latest character info and just spawn you a new one!

I've not come experienced what you describe, but there are numerous graphics problems due to lag and the fact that DayZ is still early in development, so if it doesn't happen unless you are in DayZ I'd say it's just happening due to a bug or something.
-
I bought Arma II and OA just to play DayZ, and am very glad I did! ArmA II: Combined Operations gives you everythting you need, currently $23.99 on Steam sale, well worth it.
-
If it's the STEAM version, exit steam, right-click on it's icon and "run as administrator". Now go into the properties of both ArmA II and Arma II: OA and go to local files, and "Check integrity". It'll probaby find a couple of files and re-download them. Next, run Arma II through to menu, then exit. Then run ArmA II: OA through to the menu, then exit. Then run Arma II: OA as "Combined Ops" to the menu, and exit. Now play DayZ :)

If someone creeps up on you, comes at you from behind, doesn't announce themselves before coming near you, has a gun pointed at you, is holding an axe and walking towards you... either run away, or kill them. It's not worth the risk. Real friendlies (like me!) will usually announce themselves via in-game voice chat or on the text chat. I personally wont come near your character unless you respond as friendly too and want to trade items or team up. It comes down to trust too - would you put your life in the hands of someone you don't know just because they say "Hi I won't kill you, promise!". It can be a tough world out there. EDIT: My in-game name is "GeeksterDayZ" like it is here, if you see me I'm usually with a group of 3-5 people, we don't randomly kill and have teamed up with lots of other stray solo players over the last week. I personally am happy to team up with newbies to help show you guys the ropes if you find me :)

This happened to me the other day, was playing at early-dusk time (so dark, but not too dark). Heading around Cherno hospital / apartments, and I feel like someone is following me. I drop to the ground and look around, listening. Nothing. Must be my imagination. I continue towards the apartments, and again I just feel like someone is behind me. I spin around with my axe ready to swing. Still nothing. I loot the hospital and start back towards the hills. In the middle of the apartments I hear a can of soda open nearby, now I know someone is there. I panic, but can't run away because now 5 zombies are wandering towards my location, trapping me in between the 4 apartment blocks. Now what happened next made me stain my shorts more than anything else so far in DayZ - over the direct chat blasts Drowning Pool's "Let the bodies hit the floor!" and bam! all 5 zombies are dropped like flies, almost at the same time (no way this was only 1 guy). I call out on the mic, "Thankyou!", no reply. No sound or movement anywhere in the game. I make my way up the hill, and as I turn back to look at the apartments again a really creepy voice comes over the chat and says "Everybody gets one".

I've had this happen to me quite a few times. It's usually because you have click (not hold, CLICKED) the right mouse button without a weapon equipped. This activates the "lookin down the sights" mode but the camera doesn't change as you have no weapon. Trying clicking the right mouse-button and then running.

I like this. A lot. Infinte matches seems un-authentic (as Rocket might put it lol). Nice idea :)
-
That is really, really, not going to happen. Ever. $200 US is about £130 here in the UK - I had to spend about £800 to get a PC decent enough to play Skyrim on full settngs, and even that has problems with DayZ at times. Maybe if you had access to $200 a month, you could buy parts and assemble it, you might be able to play it sometime near Christmas......

Rocket's overall plan.
GeeksterDayZ replied to FrankDaTank1218 (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, see, your post just confirms to me that you still don't really understand this process. DayZ will BECOME a well-made game but only by going through the trial and error process that is called...... (can you guess? Anyone?) yes that's right, TESTING! Specifically, alpha and down the line Beta testing. And let's be clear here - this is not even a GAME yet, it's a MOD. Rocket made this on his own, as a test and as an experiment, designed for about 30 players, only showed it to his friends; it was basically a tech demo. Then it got out there a little more, and in a very short space of time it's gone from a one-server handfull-of-people personal project to a massive community of over half a million players accross lord-knows who many servers now. They've melted and had to move the central server at least three times, it was never intended to get this big already. So you want a full-fledge, well made, issue-free game without testing? Fine, go away for 12 months and come back when the rest of us have helped iron out all these problems and you can get the DayZ stand-alone game. Oh and for the record, at no point did I call you a "casual gaming biotch". No-one has said that as it is an alpha they can 'make it as bad as they want' - the point is that if something does turn out to be bad, we the testing community are here to find that out, report back in a constrctive way, and help the project evolve. Self-pitying posts about how someone else's project didn't meet your high expectations are of course going to get the community who are enthralled by the project riled up - we will defend it against people like you who, no matter what you say, are doing little more than having a hissy fit because you don't like the mod. I won't even mention that you insult my ability to convey the English language with your childish attempt at "text-speaking" what I wrote to make me sound like a douche. Oh wait. I just did. -
Has anyone built there own base yet?
GeeksterDayZ replied to cowdung's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Diffculty with making bases at the moment is anyone can hop to a different server, move into a position that would be inside your camp, then hop back to your server and there you have it, they're in your camp and probably going to kill and/or pillage the hell out of you. That's why Rocket was speaking about using some kind of underground 'instance' for it in the future - that way whatever server you are playing on your building/base would appear to everyone, no server-hopping abliity to get inside. -
IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of zombies, way too fast !
GeeksterDayZ replied to mrbean's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
You can lose them if you run up hills, they have probkems will hills. Brfeaking line of sight doesn't really do much as they will keep searching for you, though you can use thing like small buildings as well, run in, wait for the Zed to slow down through the doorway and when it does you run away out the other door. The zombies will be made slower eventually, once they have developed proper animations for them. At the moment the speed & erratic movement comes from the fact that Rocket just adjusted the "speed" setting for character movement higher than was intended by the ArmA II engine, not the best way for it to work but it does the job for now at least. -

Rocket's overall plan.
GeeksterDayZ replied to FrankDaTank1218 (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Actually Rocket's overall plan is to have the mod become a full game in it's own right, with the ability to have players build within the world, maybe underground trading posts, more animals for those who want to basically run a 'farm' to survive, motion-captured zombies who's facial features degrade over time based on how long they have been infected for, put in things that require groupwork to get done...... have you even watched his Rezzed video where he talks about all this? This is just another tl:dr-style post from a whiny crybaby stamping his feet because the in-early-development alpha mod didn't work 100% correctly for him all the time. Sack up dude, help us all playtest this mutha of a survival sim into the greatest online experience of recent times, or go back to paying out £45 for this year's clone of last year's games that a studio pumps out and the fanboys lap up.
