    [GUIDE] Newbie Survivor version 1.2.0.

If you find yourself lost in the middle of the night with no compass. You can easily find north by using this method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=df6-M4iAv_o I realised last night that I needed to turn my gamma down so I could see the big dipper properly. Once I had found it the North Star was pretty clear to me which helped me get back to the coast where it's easier to see at night.

    List of Weapons

Good summary you have there. I can't remember the name but I picked up a 100 round box for a NATO machine gun. I'm guessing it only spawns in military bases. I'd also guess it would be incredibly loud and may even fire partial tracer which would in my humble opinion render it useless except as a last ditch weapon. Also; not technically a firearm but the crossbow should probably be included here. It is 99% useless though. The one time I used it was to kill 2 zombies in a barn that I didn't want to wake up. This was at point blank range to the back of the head.

    More servers?

Ha, a week ago there were like 8 servers. Now that has quadrupled and there still aren't enough player spots to go around. I think perhaps there will never be enough servers to satisfy the demand for this mod!

    Bandit changing

If you were in control of the NW airport then I'd be impressed. But sadly you're just killing a bunch of bean loving derpers.

    DayZ Stories

Time for a story about a lack of morals  I had run out of food and was stalking several different groups of players from the hills along the southern coastline determining which ones had the best supplies. I noticed a group of 3 running alongside the main road around 600 meters away. It was pitch black and and I knew there was zero chance that they would ever see me in my mountain perch. As they got to within 500 meters range I began to mirror their movements from the tree line. They decided to cross a shallow point in the water to a flat marshy island so I stopped at a small parting in the trees with good over-watch of their little patch of land. I watched them for around 10 minutes running around the edge of the island. Eventually they stopped in a clearing and began to discuss their plans in global chat (bad idea). I chuckled to myself as it dawned on them that they had been running around what in fact was an tiny island and not the mainland. The group made the hunt easier on me by splitting up and getting one of their party eaten by walkers. I watched for 2 or 3 minutes as he was consumed until finally his 2 group mates noticed what was happening. By the time they got to him it was too late and he was dead. One down two to go. They morbidly gathered their deceased friends supplies and spoke about what to do next. They said they were going to make a swim for it. This wasn't preferable for me as they would lose all their supplies to the ocean currents if they tried to swim away. It was time to strike... I waited a minute longer until they were facing away from each other. I dialled in my rifle range to 500 meters and pulled the trigger. The shot hit the left most survivor in the lower back. He didn't go down, instead he quickly ran into the reeds where I lost site of him. I saw him typing in global chat again, asking whether his friend had shot him, which made me realise I was so far away they couldn't hear my rifle. As the second survivor stopped to ponder what was going on I fired upon him. The bullet took a second or two to land. It hit him in the shoulder blade and he fell to the floor immediately, however he wasn't quite dead. I put him out of his misery with a second shot to the chest. Two down one to go. His friend must have seen the death message and realised he was on his own as I saw him swimming away which annoyingly meant I wouldn't be able to retrieve his items easily. I set my range to 500 and fired. The shot hit him in the neck and that was that. The group was dead. I stayed still for a while realising that many other players would no doubt have heard and read the commotion. After a minute or so I ventured down the hill to retrieve what was now mine...

I'm Fairly New to This Game

1, Double press CTRL to lower your rifle (Cant lower pistols). This will make people trust you a bit more :P. 2, Crouch run/walk pretty much everywhere to avoid detection. 3, Don't trust anyone, even the ones you're grouping with. May seem paranoid but baked beans are precious and people get desperate :P. 4, Stay away from fire stations and the airports, unless you want a quick death :P You can go there at maybe 2-4am in the morning when its pitch black though. 5, The sun sets in the west(ish), so you can find a vague north heading by keeping the sun to your leftish in the evening and the rightish in the morning. (I'm terrible at navigation so hopefully someone can confirm this). 6, You can refill your water flask from most water sources including the sea and water pumps in some towns. 7, Zombies will walk slowly when they enter buildings. 8, The crossbow sucks, don't bother with it unless you don't have a rifle yet. Good luck!

    A plea for more servers!

How much would a commercial server cost a month? Could the Dayz devs set up an official pay pal donate button on the front page? Then people could put in however much they can afford to go towards hosting.
  9. I don't understand why some players want to play a realistic semi-hardcore zombie sim like this game is if you don't want it to be hard and unforgiving. I've had 3 characters so far, the first one died of blood loss whilst trying to swim away from a pack of zombies across a river. The second character was shot dead whilst collecting water and hunting animals peacefully by a lake. I wasn't angry about this, I was just like "Fuck! this world is unforgiving and well... AMAZING!". My third character was really effected by the fate of the one before it. I decided this life I'm going to be the predator and see what that's like. It's fun still, but in a different way than to just surviving. I stalked 3 different players last night down a coastal road in total darkness with the intent of forcefully taking their stuff. I found it to be oddly and morbidly satisfying when I succeeded (weird I know). It got my heart racing more than any other game has in the past. The thrill of the chase I suppose, it really felt like a life or death fight for something that meant something to all parties involved. Who knows what my fourth character will be, probably a mix of the above. But my point is; having an unforgiving world where players can do whatever they want is great because most zombie games (and most games in general) don't let you do that. Every player cares about their life and wants to preserve it at all costs, can you think of a game where you truly want to stay alive as much as you do in Dayz? Because I can't. I'd really appreciate it if the devs kept that sense of urgency and sandbox live-in-fear survival. The way it would almost certainly would be if a zombie apocalypse did happen. Trivialising the world by removing player killing, imposing infractions on player-killers or whatever other suggestions are made on this thread will make this game predictable, linear and most of all BORING :(.
