There were some desync issues that caused passengers in Huey's to randomly die, and they were quite buggy in general. Check this topic for example http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/45872-dear-rocket-what-is-the-eta-on-that-chopper-fix/

While servers generally list their location (Chicago 2, Dallas 1, RU2, etc.) these generally don't correlate to the time on the server. For example, being located in the same timezone as Chicago (GMT-6), I assumed that all the Chicago servers would indeed have the same time as myself. However when I logged into several Chicago servers this morning around 6-7 am (when it's definitely light outside) It was completely night on the server. This wouldn't be a problem if I could jump in and out quickly, but with the current load on the login/database server it can take 15+ minutes to connect! So I would like to suggest that server creators should list their Server's time in terms of GMT. That way users will know what time it will be on ther server without having to wait half an hour first.

Myself and several friends have had this as well after 1.5.8.4. We would log out somewhere in-land only to start back on the beach the next time we logged on, but we would still have all our gear from before.

Which T-Shirt design would you buy?

I still just want a "Waiting for server response" shirt. I'm dead serious. -
Cannot pitch a tent Patch [1.5.8.4]
johannesmp replied to disturbd's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
+1 here as well. Even in a flat field with nothing but grass you can't pitch a tent. The annoying thing is that the message "You cannot place a Tent here. The area must be flat, and free of other objects" does not tell you which of the two criteria (1. flat 2. objects) it thinks that you are not meeting. And even weirder, I've seen people pitch tents on the shoreline, where the slope is quite steep. Please, make the requirements for tent placement more lenient. It doesn't make sense to not be able to place a tent in a forest when you are in a spot that's reasonably flat and at least 5 meters in all directions away from other objects. -
I've had a camping tent on me a few times now and have spent hours trying to place it without any success - I always get the annoying "You cannot place a Tent here. The area must be flat, and free of other objects" The message states that there are two requirements: 1. The area must be flat (no slope) 2. The area must be free of ojects. The annoying thing is I don't have a way to know which of these criteria I am not meeting, or how I'm not meeting it. For example, in the image above I made sure to try on top of a hill, and in a location where there were no trees/rocks/bushes/etc for a good 5 meters in any direction from me. I would like to know: 1. What does it mean by 'flat'? I have seen tents pitched on the slope of the beach which must have been at least 10°, far more than many places I've tried to pitch a tent. 2. What does it mean by 'objects'? Obviously Trees, Bushes, Rocks, Fences, Buildings, etc. count, but what about tall grass? Or any grass at all? Does this have to be completely free of any ground cover? More often I see tents pitched on parking lots, but I want to actually pitch one that is hidden from sight so that's no option for me. I have been very careful to make sure that trees and any other physical objects are several meters away from my location. I was hoping 2. would be more lenient now with 1.5.8.3's fix: But even after I updated to 1.5.8.4 today it hasn't changed at all. I have asked several people on various servers about this issue and most seem to say that it's pretty random, and that they just keep trying until eventually it decides to work. Is that really it, or does anyone in the community know a solid, sure-fire way to place a tent (on grass, not on pavement)? Is there a special trick? When you do place the tent is it placed where you are looking, or at the location where you are currently standing? I am a very visual person, so I would love it if there was a video of someone successfully planting a tent, preferably in a semi-hidden area, and not on a totally open field. TL;DR Can someone explain to me, or preferably show me, how to place a tent that's not on pavement?

A few suggestions that might be nice to have in future updates of this tool: Download progress bar/download speed indicator Make the updater self updating Show the current version of the Day Z Mod Updater somewhere, like in the title. Make the text in the 'status' element non-editable.
-
If it's sitting at 'Downloading dayz_anim_v0.1.rar' it's likey because the server is very slow right now. You can check this by just downloading the file manually from the server here: http://cdn.armafiles.info/ - For me right now it says 20 mins remaining for the 32MB anim file. This would be much more clear if this tool included an actual progress bar for downloads. Any chance you could add that in a future version Worrom?

Hey Adam, Currently the 'arma 2' link at the bottom of the page just links back to the dayz mod website. I think it should link to www.arma2.com

I love the idea of infection, though how do we get wood for fires?

Awesome work! My only complaint is that it is quite difficult to distinguish the individual icons at a glance since they're all white on red. You should use different colors for similar things, for example stairs, ladders, ropes, could all be orange, wells/harbor blue, gas stations green, hospital white with a red cross, etc. That way it would be far easier to quickly find something specific, and less time looking at maps means more time to not get eaten by zombies in-game :) In any case, keep up the good work!
-
Aye, iron sights would definitely have been your friend in this case. Play the Arma 2 Bootcamp tutorials if you need to learn to properly use your weapons (do the ones that start with an 'e', they're from OA and are better than the ones that come with the base game)

With all due respect' date=' the metric that users care about is how long it takes them to log in, not at what capacity the database is running. As of right now, it still generally takes 5-15 minutes to get past 'waiting for server response' during day/evening US hours, doubly so on the weekend. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would expect that adding another 2000 user slots will not positively affect log-in times, even if it means that the database only reaches 60% capacity. I think [i']that is what the OP was getting at with this topic. I'm not saying I necessarily agree with the idea to stop adding servers - I think the community needs to expand naturally - but I do feel that the OP's concern is a legitimate one. The current log-in times are, let's face it, unacceptable. While of-course there are technical limitations here, it's an alpha, etc... ideally the time to log in should not take more than a few seconds, even at peak times on the weekend. I do feel that unless something is changed, optimized, upgraded, or whatever needs to be done to lower log-in times, that eventually we will hit an equilibrium where users will not be willing to wait as long and so will stop the growth of servers. For example, most users probably won't be willing to wait 2 hours to log in. Therefore I'm not -too- worried about this being an issue. I would in any case be curious to hear an official statement by the devs regarding the time it takes to log in. I totally understand that this is an alpha, but looking through the forums I just haven't been able to find their stance on it. Is this a top priority, or are they focusing on other things now, or is this something that simply can't even be changed due to some hard limitation in the engine/system being used? Anything is fine for me personally, I can wait my 15 minutes to play and totally understand that this kind of stuff takes time in development, I'm just curious if the devs have made an official statement on this subject.

Just wondering, the average life expectancy used to be around 4:30... now it's showing up as this: Is this correct? Seems odd that the average has plummeted so much in only a few days.

savedbygrace: these are all great suggestions, but should be shared in the suggestions section of these forums. This topic is really intended specifically for feedback on 1.5.7, and not suggestions.

The infamous 'Bird Simulator' Overview In Patch 1.5.5 Users encountered what many called a 'bird simulator' (forum link) This was quickly labelled as the result of hackers, and people that torrented the game. Today patch 1.5.7 was released and I experienced this same bug when I first tried to log onto a server. I am not a hacker or torrenter. I legally purchased 'Arma 2: combined operations' on May 11 with the explicit purpose of playing 'DayZ' after reading the rock paper shotgun article about it. You can check my steam profile for that, as well as my steam transactions. I also did not do anything else to my Arma II installation except install DayZ in the standard '@DayZ' folder in Operation Arrowhead's root folder. Nothing else was touched This post is intended to document this bug/feature/whatever it may be for users that haven't seen it yet (I do think it was very cool), and to maybe help the developers see that this is an issue that does seem to occur with perfectly legal users. Also I just wanted to share a really unique experience I had. What happened Note: you can click on any of the thumbnails to see a larger image, or go here for a complete gallery of all the screenshots I took. By default I play on very low settings, so the first few screenshots look much more 'posterized', with low texture detail and no AA. A few screenshots in I tried raising my graphics quality and noticed that the framerate stayed very high from this perspective, unlike the regular game which is unplayable at high for me. since gamma changes are not captured in screenshots, I've added a simple level transform with photoshop to make these screenshots easier to see I am a brand new DayZ player. As many recent additions to the community, I purchased Arma2:CO with the intent of playing this mod. I played through the basic CO bootcamp tutorials to learn the controls, and then jumped straight into DayZ. I'm not really sure what triggered this bug. I had just updated to 1.5.7, and tried to log in on the first, low-ping server I could find that had upgraded to 1.5.7. When I first spawned I was in the 'debug forest' and although I could move around, all my gear was gone. Then when I tried to re-spawn, this bug happened. Starting out as a bird I realized very quickly that this bug was quite unique. Even though I had my Audio turned all the way up, The game was completely silent. There was no music, no nothing. I was also limited to only using the green group chat, but other users did not seem to see what I typed there. No sound dispite it being turned up, and initial attempts to communicate go un-answered On a few occasions I even tried to fly infront of users but they all seemed to ignore me (more on that later), so I was completely cut off from the rest of the server. (post split due to image limitation) Although I've played DayZ for a good few hours already, as most new users I had so far only hugged the coastal areas of the map and had not dared to explore further in-land. This 'Bug' gave me an amazing overview of the map, and a feel for just how expansively huge it really is. Flying silently over the countryside. What probably was the most fascinating to me about this 'Bug' was how much it contrasted with the feel of the regular game. When playing as a survivor you are constantly on edge, keenly listening to any unexpected sound, watching for any sudden movements, and constantly in fear of being jumped or shot in the back of the head. First encounter with a survivor - due to lag he was stuck running in place As a survivor you also focus keenly on your UI to see how easily detected you might be, to check your stats and gear, and many users use the on-screen chat to communicate with others. Following a lone Bandit, possibly circling his pray. Players are also limited to realistic human speeds, so navigating the map can take a very long time, especially when crouch-running or sneaking around zombies and potentially dangerous locations. A new arrival, running by the water In contrast, when flying as the bird there was no audio at all. There is no UI to keep an eye on except the chat which, as mentioned before, you can't even use. The bird also controls like a helicopter in hover mode, (WASD for lateral movement, Q and Z for altitude, C and V for rotation) and could fly at around 200 km/h This allowed me to sit back and really take in how beautiful this game is, especially at night. Some landmarks I was no more than a shadow, flying over the dark countryside, only rarely disturbed by the occasional flare. Flares in the night This provided me with a unique opportunity to spectate other players as they are fighting for their lives against the terrors of the night, staking out their claim on rooftops and in clearings. Survivors camping out for the night. With 1.5.7 the devs claimed that zombie spawning had been increased a good bit, and I could definitely tell. Zombies were -everywhere- Zombies don't much seem to care for birds. About about halfway through my bird adventure I ran across a small troupe of 3 survivors that I decided to follow. I'm pretty sure they were heading East towards Chernogorsk. I would often fly around them to see if they could see me. At times it looked like they were looking at me, but none ever opened fire and it could have just been a coincidence. With no way to communicate, there was no way for me to ask. I was really rooting for these guys. They were very careful, always taking the time they needed to sneak around zombie hordes and, only lighting flares or engaging them when it was absolutely necessary. I definitely learned a good bit about how to go about playing as a team at night by watching these guys. To my dismay, as they were approaching what I think was Cherno from the west, I was abruptly disconnected. Random Disconnection. Sad face. Although I attempted to log in afterwards, I could not remember the server this occurred on, and when I did finally spawn on a server I was back to my regular human self. In conclusion Having done some research I now know that this bug seems to be specific to Arma 2. The bird is something like the 'spectator mode', and it can sometimes kick in when there is no free slot for the user to spawn into, or something like that. That discussion is really not the point of this post though. I just wanted to share my experience and show that, yes, this can occur for someone that has bought the game completely legally, with no hacking. I won't go as far as to say that I want this in the game. I know that this 'feature' could be easily abused by players to spy out enemy hideouts and would totally break immersion, but it still is something worth considering. At the very least it is a cool easter egg.' Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it. As mentioned above, you can find the full gallery of screenshots I took during my experience here: http://imgur.com/a/abxXW

He said "I already have ARMA: 2", and was only asking if he also needed operation arrowhead. The answer is: yes, the game requires both Arma 2 and OA. Whether you get it through combined operations (which just bundles the two) or as separate purchases does not matter.

Note: This is a technical bug report post. For a more personal account of what happened, with lots of pictures, please check this topic in the gallery section. What triggered the bug: Note: I believe that this was a one-time bug, since I was unable to replicate it when logging on again later. In any case, here is what I did when it was triggered: I updated my DayZ installation to 1.5.7. I started ArmaII: OA in steam and selected the 'Launch ARMA 2: Combined Operations' Option In the multiplayer server browser I connected to a free server with low Ping. I believe this might have been 'TX3', but I'm not sure (I'm located in Wisconsin in the US) After waiting the usual +15 minutes on 'Waiting on server response' I spawned in at the location I had logged off before in 1.5.6, but all my items, weapons, etc were gone. Being the reasonable player that understands what an 'alpha' is, I took it in stride and went through the steps to suicide/respawn. Another 15 minutes of 'Waiting on server response' later I spawned as a bird: What exactly happens? You spawn as small black bird. It looks like the standard bird models you see flying around in-game sometimes. I couldn't tell the exact colors because it was night-time on the server. The bird controls exactly like a helicopter in hover mode. WASD/Arrow keys to move you laterally, Q and Z to move up and down, and X and C to rotate you around the vertical/Y axis. When not moving you hover in place and you can only move backwards at a very slow pace. The bird is able to fly through walls - You bump into a wall for a moment and will teleport through it a second later. Most standard user interface elements and controls no longer work: Attempting to open the Player list [P] or Journal [J] cause the in-game task bar to blink for a moment but then hide again. Opening the map does however show the task bar correctly: The middle mouse button does nothing - no menu appears The gear button[G] no longer does anything. Same with weapon mode/flare [F] and the communication buttons [1,2,...,9,0]. Chat is limited to the 'Group Channel' and trying to switch to other channels does not work. Other users cannot see what you say in Group Channel. [*]Music and sound-effects were completely off, despite settings being up and my volume being turned up: [*]It seems that Zed as well as other players cannot see the bird at all, nor harm it. [*]Unfortunately it was night when this bug occurred.

'Bird Simulator' Spectator mode Bug
johannesmp replied to johannesmp's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Yeah, after some research and discussion it was pretty clear that this is not much of a bug, just an issue with the server spawning you wrong. This post is more intended for the sake of documentation than really asking the devs to fix something. -
Feedback: There are a metric shit-ton of zombies. I love it! =D More zombies has made exploring a city far more challenging and unforgiving. However I also noticed that in some locations zombies spawn in the floor (this may have happened pre 1.5.7, but has become much more apparent now) Trying to kill a jumper in the ground felt like a twisted form of whack-a-mole: . (My bug report for this issue is still awaiting approval.) While Experiencing the 'Bird Simulator' bug I also noticed that zombies will sometimes spawn above one another, resulting in them bouncing up and down
