20 words or less: Spawning without a weapon
jonahcutter replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I hope it doesn't, but if the mod ever goes back to having players spawn with a weapon, there is only one real choice. A truly iconic anti-zombie weapon, and yet one so common every player could logically have one from the very beginning: CAST-IRON FRYING PAN. PLANG! -
Zombies? What zombies? This is pure PvP.
jonahcutter replied to AzinGaming's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No. Zombie-survival is the bait that attract players to the mod. OP is pretty much spot on in his assessment. The mod, while having immense promise, in its current form is no where near as daring as it thinks it is. People fawn over the the pvp. But the pvp is just the base game at work. If you like the pvp battles of DayZ, then you'd love ArmA pvp. I really hope Rocket can actually make the mod something more than players KOSing for the chance to camp a ghillie suit spawn. Or KOSing just for kicks. Because once you learn the mechanics, the zombie-survival aspect becomes a nuisance at best. -
Saving gear through respawns. Is there anything more carebear? Do tents trivialize DayZ's perma-death?
-
Dying isn't dying if you have a tent!
-
So saving gear between deaths is hardcore perma-death?

Not to be rude, but you're making excuses for a game mechanic that dramatically lessens the impact of death. Allowing stored gear to survive between deaths makes the claims of perma-death a sham. -
Good question. What is the mod really about?

It's justified because it "takes time"? Any self-proclaimed hardcore player worth his salt will tear you a new one for that comment. Unless he really likes being able to stash gear himself... ;) -

I'm not sure what you're missing. You run back to the tent and you're kitted back up. It's very easy. It's not hard to farm gear at all. Ask yourself this: Does anything that minimizes the difficulty from recovering from dying belong in the mod? I'm all for stashes to accumulate gear while you manage to remain alive. But they should disappear when you die. Being able to run back to your stash after you are dead and grab more gear is inherently carebear. -

Yeah. Storage that carries over from respawn to respawn. How is that perma-death? it's a carebear mechanic. -
it's weird hearing Rocket talk about making death count, when things like tents completely trivialize it. Being able to save gear makes death largely inconsequential. It makes the "perma-death" hook of the mod a sham. Tents are the carebear mechanic of DayZ.

Are zombies anything more than a nuisance?
jonahcutter replied to jonahcutter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
What I'm saying is the base game has pvp where you focus on surviving pvp encounters too. Death means you're out for the mission. You don't respawn. The mission plays out without you once you die. You do respawn in DayZ. Yes you start over at zero, unless you have a tent... A tent means you do not start over. Tents are inherently a carebear mechanic, cushioning the pain of dying and trivializing starting over after a death. Surviving a pvp encounter means far less when you know you've got another full kit waiting for you (or even worse, multiples). -

I just added an edit to the post you responded to. I'll repeat it here: The base game has pvp where you die once and are out. That's not this mod inherently. -

It was almost always still more time-efficient to run back to the stash for a full kit, then try to farm gear while defenseless. And the base game has pvp where you die once and are out. -

jonahcutter replied to jonahcutter's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Tents allow the accumulation of multiple sets of gear. At one point, I had tents stored in tents, so I could just reset myself completely if I died without ever having to go through the initial, defenseless stage. If I died, I just ran through the forest to my stash, popped up the new tent and transferred the gear. That's when I started asking myself what the point was. -

Exactly. It's testing. Where you ("you" as in players ;) ) provide feedback and pose hard questions. If the zombie "hook" of the mod becomes largely pointless once you learn the mod, then what's the point of the mod? Because the pvp mechanics are the base game itself. -

I agree about CSS and other fps games. But you yourself said the zombies are not a factor. The pvp of the mod is the base game itself. -

And again, I'll reply who said anything about "fault"? I'm curious as to what the focus of the mod is, essentially. Why do players play it? What gameplay is the mod "modding" that is engaging to players, if the zeds themselves aren't a challenge? -

I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm just asking what's the point for you of playing a zombie mod where the zombies don't affect you. If you're just pvping, then you're basically just playing a watered down version of the base game itself. -

I'm not sure what you mean by "fault". I'm not accusing anyone of anything. -

He stared at you blankly? Hmmm, I must need a new graphics card, "staring blankly" is the only facial expression I'm getting... -

What's the point of the mod then? You're basically just playing the base game. -

Oh, I should also add: I've never died to exposure, hunger or thirst. Has anyone? -

I died a LOT to zeds when I first started playing. The learning curve of the mod is steep no doubt. And the base ArmA game is unusual enough to make it bit of a hurdle in itself. Numbers-wise, I've died more to zeds than other players. But, since I learned the controls of the base game, and the mechanics of the mod itself, I haven't died to a zed in weeks.
