This was how it was in the beginning of dayz, granted that was mostly due to the fact there was 1-5 servers. (How times have changed!) The main problem with this, is that one part of the world would be playing essentially always in the daytime, and one part of the world would be playing essentially always at night time.

one of the main problems with increasing melee damage in dayz right now, is that melee doesn't even exist in arma. from what I can tell, swinging the fireaxe is akin to shooting a really really really short range bullet. or maybe it's a throw.

well, it doesn't make much sense to lose a round to a weapon malfunction of they're so sought after. usually a weapon misfire is due to a light strike on the primer of the round, a flawed round, or a problem with the gun that doesn't involve the bullet at all. As for a weapon repair kit that needs to be entirely replaced after a few uses? that's never made much sense to me. I've been using the same tools and cleaning kits for my guns since I originally purchased them. the only things that ever really need replacing are the cleaning patches, and the occasional bottle of cleaning fluid. As for a gun having so many rounds put through it that it starts to fall apart, you would need to put a LOT of rounds through it. more than any gun in dayz is likely to ever see. But requiring general maintenance, or otherwise risking accuracy degredation might make sense. but it would either be such a short time that it doesn't really matter, or such a long time that it becomes a frustration.

To all the people complaining about PvP...

Feeding obvious troll, but whatevs. Well, a post-apocalyptic world is bound to have psychopathic murderers killing random people. your logic is flawed hilariously for your actions, but oh well. As for the topic of toning down PvP, I love PvP, even being usually on the receiving end of it. it lends excitement to the game. I wouldn't mind something to tone it down a bit, as deathmatching it is pretty dumb. the forum braggery however is loldum. have fun camping a spawn. -
So, you've finally gotten the hang of the game. You have a ghillie suit, that neat rifle you've had your eye on forever, enough ammo to keep you going for a while, and more med supplies than you'll ever need. You've got everything you could want and so the big question remains... now what? What do you do when equipment scavenging is no longer your goal? What drives you to play past this point? Though I haven't QUITE reached this point, I'm getting pretty close. only thing I can really think of is set up near cherno/electro with a rifle and pop bandits as they hunt down newbies. But I'd like to hear other ideas as well! Putting this in survivors, as any bandits answer is pretty obvious. They bandit.
