Beans for the post even if it does illustrate in a way why I'm not exactly a fan of Epoch. I don't believe we should be encouraged to kill zombies. I see them more as a threat that we need to defend ourselves from to survive rather than go Rambo on them, clearing the country of zombies, saving the humanity or something. Even though my character is regularly days or weeks old, I've never considered DayZ a long term survival game. It's always been about, as BAHADIR put it, living one more day. Having a goal is good, but when your whole gameplay is focused around collecting materials for your base and selling/buying stuff from AI, it doesn't feel like DayZ anymore. Plus once you get bored of basebuilding, you end up going back to shooting people again anyway. As a bonus your character life has very little value by then so you don't care even if you do die. Lack of things to do and poor use of the map, meaning you nearly always end up visiting same towns/villages and same buildings, is certainly a problem with vanilla DayZ but again, I do believe standalone is going to fix that problem to a large degree. I'm sure it can be done without changing the original experience too much.

DayZ Standalone... over a year too late.
[email protected] replied to jBrick's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Perhaps the creators don't want the game to be different in the way you want it to be? I for one don't want epoch style base building, I don't want "safety for my hard work". Standalone is not going to be a completely new experience, and it doesn't need to be. -
Personally, I'd much prefer gameplay centered around surviving. ie scavenging for stuff you might find useful to survive, rather than use it to make your house prettier or to sell it and buy a vodnik or something. I firmly believe trading in this game only makes sense if it's done through player interactions. I know what you're thinking. DayZ hasn't been about surviving for quite some time either, and that's true to an extent, but if what we've seen so far is anything to go by, Dean is really aiming to change that in the standalone.

Epoch does add more things to do but what you end up doing most of the time is pretty lame and does not fit into this game at all imo. Hoarding useless stuff in order to buy a car? Meh. There are so many servers with safe zones you might as well call it a feature. Vanilla DayZ is only going to die because of the standalone, not because of Epoch. Most people playing vanilla will switch to SA while those wanting something different will stay with arma mods or play both.

life's a drag then you die

Just out curiosity, why is it that you always refer to people you meet as idiots or empty headed morons? Is it because you're better than them at a video game? You come across as a real douche tbh and I don't mean that because you killed a guy with nothing but a pistol on him. -
Rocket talking about measures they've taken to reduce KoS mentality.... A few minutes later he KoS-es the first guy they encountered  Looking really good so far.

Dean - Sort it out man. Losing your way
[email protected] replied to Thegoon84's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
That mask alone makes the screenshot look very... WarZ-esque for some reason. It's not a big deal but I agree it looks out of place and don't really see any practical purpose in having those in the game. What exactly is the point of trying to hide our in game identity? -
What's the deal with epoch.
[email protected] replied to SteelKnife's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It depends on what you mean by "playing DayZ" I guess. The non pvp aspect of epoch doesn't really make me feel I'm playing DayZ. Far from that actually. It does give you more stuff to do which in turn does mean I'm less likely to go try pick a fight out of boredom. I don't like the way it achieves that however. Hoarding stuff I don't need in order to buy a car doesn't really fit into DayZ for me. Not to mention the whole traders idea with safe zones which most epoch servers have is pretty lame. Bases are too safe, cars are too safe, although they can get stolen... in theory. Safe storage devalues character life even more which is why it's still a pvp/kos fest. They do have some ideas I'd like to see in DayZ but overall, I'm not a fan of Epoch. -
idea for make player hide in long grass
[email protected] replied to wild_man's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
What we need is an improved grass layer. So not only will the character partly sink into the ground at distance but there will also be some blur and transparency applied as well. That along with the improved lighting of DayZ SA would solve the issue with practically no performance hit. -

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting a ban or anything like that. He most likely got banned by the server admin and that's all that he deserved. Nothing less nothing more. I actually do like some of Lee's stories but for me there's a difference between a dick move that will make some people rage and others laugh, and this kind of behavior which is plain childishness. -

The original design of DayZ doesn't matter as long as we're talking about an ARMA mod played on a private server. Non-pvp servers existed before DayZ. It still wasn't ok to break the rules because you believed that's not how ARMA should be played. Most popular DayZ servers these days stray so far away from the original concept that most people already do play the game contrary to the vision and design of DayZ anyway. Is this not exactly what they're trying to achieve on those servers though? -

[email protected] replied to LeeHarveyEnfield's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree, but that's beside the point. Don't forget that DayZ is a mod of ARMA and people who run their private server are free to set their own gameplay rules. The fact that you or me think that said rules are not in the spirit of the offical DayZ mod doesn't really matter. It's not much different from joining an ARMA server and TKing everyone for the lulz. -

No, Raymond is right. The game is "meant to be played" the way admins set up their private server, as simple as that. Whether we think the rules are lame or not is irrelevant. Playing on a no-pvp server with the whole intention of killing everyone is pretty much the definition of trolling. -

This. I've never joined a server like that and never will, especially with such ridiculous rules but you know what? I don't care if there are people who want to play in a certain way on their server. It's kinda ironic how some people insist no playstyle should be looked down upon and yet they have such a problem with a small minority playing the game in a way they want. To the extent that they will go out their way forcing their own playstyle and trying to ruin it for others. Why the hell do you care? Joining a server for the sole purpose of breaking the rules doesn't make you a badass, it makes you an asshole. -

What stops people taking SA features over to the mod?
[email protected] replied to scaramoosh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Wouldn't then by that logic the SA also be moddable since you can just port over anything you want from another RV engine? Pretty much every feature that actually separates the SA from the mod would be very hard, or impossible to achieve as a mod. THAT is the whole point of the standalone in the first place. -
Epoc, should I bother?
[email protected] replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I see how it can be a fun mod on its own but it doesn't really have that survival feel about it, no. Chances are, your friend is not playing vanilla Epoch either in which case you'll most likely hate it. -
DayZ vs DayZero ('vanilla' DayZ mod)
[email protected] replied to frosti's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Hmm, I haven't played in a while but I don't remember DayZero zombies being useless? You can't lose them very easily by breaking the LOS nor do pine trees mean a zombie free zone. I'm not sure about the damage they deal but they do seem more powerful than vanilla zeds as well. One of the main things I don't like about DayZero is that setting up any kind of camp or base is pretty much impossible. I don't want Epoch style base building but tents are pointless really when they despawn so quickly. People are left with not much to do and it's no wonder it's a KOS fest over there. -
It should be in the game for ergonomic reasons imo. I don't believe it would detract from the experience in any way either. The realism argument doesn't hold here. Unless you believe we should have separate keys controlling each leg in order to walk.

DayZ SA not being moddable
[email protected] replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You do make a good point about gear in vanilla being less secure than it realistically would be in a real life situation. However, I still much prefer the tents/stashes system where finding someone's stuff is the hard part (unless you have a chopper and use 3rd person but that's another story) as opposed to camping a base waiting for players to log in. Finding a vanilla epoch server is hard indeed. Almost to the point you could consider some features being a part of the mod considering how many servers have them on. I don't like vanilla epoch either, but in the end it doesn't matter how creative, or how well thought out and executed your idea is in this game. As long as you allow modding, it is only a matter of time before it turns into 10000 vehicles|extra barracks|safe zones|self bloodbag|spawn with DMR lameness. -
DayZ SA not being moddable
[email protected] replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
A million or so people who bought this military simulator for the sole purpose of playing a buggy mod in which you do exactly that? There are more that enough players interested in vanilla experience, I don't believe Dean is concerned about poor sales. Yeah. In a similar way these mods of the mod do nothing for me, some people will obviously feel the same for the SA. That doesn't mean the game should be moddable though. In fact, it should be completely the opposite if it is going to have any sort of direction. -
DayZ SA not being moddable
[email protected] replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm not seeing it that way tbh. Some of the core elements of mods such as epoch and origins, things that actually truly separate them from vanilla go directly against what Dean wanted/wants this game to be about and by all accounts would be very unlikely to ever be implemented. You do realize DayZ mod was hugely popular before epoch even existed, right? Yes, it depends how you define success though. Popularity doesn't mean shit really, going by that logic the SA should feature 1000 helis, 100000 vehicles servers by default. The game not coming out because of the popularity of the mods would be pretty strange considering it is most likely going to come out with no vehicles and certainly no base building, not even tents. -
DayZ SA not being moddable
[email protected] replied to rooniedoo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Uh, it's pretty clear the SA will be much closer to vanilla than to epoch or origins. I guess rocket is one of the "fanboys" as well. -
Will hackers really be subdued in SA? Not likely.
[email protected] replied to Ozelot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I don't know if there is one but I assume there is. Dean talked about how removing the crosshairs would, in addition to being more realistic, also help with security making it harder to create aimbot hacks. And he still wasn't implying it would be impossible to make one.
