Yeah, none of the available maps were made for DayZ. It would be pretty cool to have a map built specifically for a zombie apocalypse game but that would take a long time which is why even the standalone will be on Chernarus. There's a guy making one but I think he's doing it all by himself, including new buildings and objects so it won't be finished any time soon.

You do know all those maps were created for ARMA, not DayZ right? Take a look at BI forum threads for each map and how long it actually took to finish them.

Does sidechat ruin anyone elses game?
[email protected] replied to bad_mojo (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
For the same reason many servers now have a ridiculous starting loadout, hundreds of vehicles and choppers, 24/7 daylight, or even a modified map with barracks and such near the coast. The first time I played on a sever like that, going from Kamenka to Balota I managed to find more stuff than I could possibly carry. I don't like side chat. I'm yet to be saved from hackers thanks to it and yet I've been accused of hacking for simply killing someone. Go figure. -
Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Technically you're correct in that zoom and fov are not the same thing. You get to see more to the sides when switching to third person view because the camera moves back then. Please explain how I don't get what kind of advantage you have over someone who doesn't have the benefit of peeking from behind a wall. I've been playing this game since OFP, I'm perfectly aware of all third person vs first person advantages and disadvantages. That's funny because ARMA does in fact handle first person view differently to other shooters and first person view isn't just a floating camera with hands and a weapon attached to it. -
Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
We should all start with jet packs, screw realism and since everybody has one, no one is at a disadvantage, we're all equally matched and it won't affect firefight mechanics, right? Third person view has been "part of the game" since OFP, I don't see what does that have to do with anything, I've always played on servers with it disabled. Good post Wep0n. Goes to show how hard is it to come up with a compromise that solves the biggest issue with 3DP view - peeking around corners and seeing everything while in cover. Especially since every fix involves either blurring certain parts of the screen or narrowing the FOV, both of which would cause far more motion sickness problems than the narrower FOV that comes with the first person view, which is adjustable anyway. -
Most of these are a joke.

Yeah this is true. I accidentally joined a wrong server, spawned on the coast with NVGs, a compass, 3 bandages, M9 SD with 3 mags and a DMR I think too. The first thing that crossed my mind was "what do I do now"? Huge part of the fun in this game is starting with nothing, even if it's not all that hard to find decent gear. In the first two minutes I saw three choppers. I was probably the only one on the map not to have a car yet too. More and more servers are now just ARMA with some zombies thrown in and an "annoying" food/water meter. -
Yes it will.

Modded Dayz is dull because..
[email protected] replied to disorder's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yeah, I agree with a lot of that. I'm not sure I like the direction the mod is heading tbh. Sure, there are different kinds of servers for different tastes so you can pick one you like, but having too many options isn't always the best thing. It seems more and more servers feature a ridiculous number of vehicles, custom loadouts with guns, 24h daylight etc, basically straying too far from the original concept. People are getting so used to vehicles they don't even want to play without one anymore. I understand why, but it is precisely the reason why they shouldn't be abundant. They effectively make the map much smaller. I hope Rocket has a clear vision for the Standalone. I guess one thing we can count on is that he won't be making it "accessible" for the sake of it. Removing the starting gun was an unpopular choice back then, but he still did it without being afraid of losing players. I have faith he will do similar for the Standalone and capture the survival atmosphere of the original mod with all the goodies and features of the new engine architecture. -
DayZ is going to end up like The War Z (more hackers in DayZ than The War Z)
[email protected] replied to Maxxgold (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The reason it's "the most hacked game ever" is ARMA, and it's not because the devs are clueless, it was the way the game was designed and hacking was never considered a problem in ARMA itself because the player base was completely different. The standalone is going to be locked down which should stop the majority of the hacks but not all, Rocket has acknowledged this himself. It won't be 100% hack free but with the locked engine, new cheat protection and private hives it should be pretty close. -
Should Heli Crash Sites be marked on the Map?
[email protected] replied to klesh's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
No, it's a terrible idea. I assume it was inspired by the Wasteland mission. The problem is that DayZ gameplay dynamics are nothing like Wasteland. The last thing this game/mod needs is more PvP incentives. People who play alone are the ones getting hurt the most by this. They don't even have to bother with crash sites anymore. This change makes zero sense and should be changed back. -
Heli crash sites being displayed on the map? What the eff??

Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
It has nothing to do with who is "right". Some of us are just arguing that removing the third person view while correcting the issues that would cause (increase FOV and lower head bob by default, make tall grass shorter) would be a far better solution than trying to find a compromise that is never going to solve the problem when it comes to gunfights anyway. You can't give people an option to peek around corners and make them not see anything at the same time. Seriously, just watch any DayZ video on youtube. Everyone exploits the third person view to all hell. Just because we're all free to do so doesn't make it a non issue. Again, I'm yet to hear one good reason why third person view should stay at all costs, aside from someone just being used to it. -

Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Third person view. Removing the starting gun was said to be a very dumb move by many people. As was removing the debug monitor. I really see no good reason why 3dp must stay aside from people being used to it. -
Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Well, yeah. It's kinda hard to simulate first person "the right way". If you were to put a camera to your head and run like that it would shake even more than it does but of course our brain adjusts for that. On the other hand, a floating camera doesn't feel or look real either. Disagree on the zoom being removed. It's supposed to simulate real life resolution of our eyes and playable FOV at the same time. It's pretty much spot on. Yep, like I said, most people don't realize how much effect third person has on combat mechanics. -
Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Perhaps it should be more clear that turning down head bob and changing FOV is indeed possible. WIth different default values there would be more people playing on FP servers too. I don't really see how is FP buggy and laggy and 3DP isn't when they're both the same in ARMA with a different camera. -
Third person vs First person view
[email protected] replied to Rising (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Fixing the 3rd person exploits will always be very hard, if not impossible. I know it's not a "plz remove TP" thread but really, I would be all for that. I was just watching a few pretty interesting and well made squad vs squad videos but couldn't help but notice how 3rd person view is abused to hell by everyone. I don't think people realize how much effect it has on firefights. Put a slider to control the FOV instead of having to mess with config files, cut the grass shorter so it doesn't obscure your view that much, there's even an ARMA mod for that - problem solved. -
Day Z Standalone:preventing farming and ghosting
[email protected] replied to Tooka (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
How is loot cycling any less of an exploit than server hopping? "A tactical, well planned, risky strategy"? LOL. It's an exploit of the loot system, plain and simple. -
day z needs more vehicles!
[email protected] replied to bfisher's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
For gameplay reasons I hope not too many vehicles are added. Perhaps there should be more repairable cars but make them harder to repair then. Having a working vehicle in a zombie apocalypse should me something special rather than everyone on the map having one. I always avoid those servers with 100's of vehicles and 10's of choppers. Completely goes against what DayZ is about IMO. -
Making it optional would accomplish nothing, might as well leave it as it is then. I think it's a good idea. Flying without auto hover is still easy but landing does require at least some skill. I'm fine with arcade-ish vehicle controls. Helicopters should be harder.

Multiple characters on public servers is a bad idea, as demonstrated by WarZ. It opens up so many potential exploits that it's just not worth it. People camping in one place and placing their other characters on counter sniping positions so when you kill them they just come back immediately knowing where you are etc.

Combat loggers now get replaced with bots!
[email protected] replied to Azrail (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I agree, combat logging should be activated by zombie aggro. Not being able to get rid of the horde of zombies chasing you by simply logging out would be awesome. Woah, nice. Zeds not spawning while in vehicles is a total immersion breaker. So is the fact you're magically safe getting in one. Frankie doesn't like this. Am I the only one who didn't know there was a chance of infection from zed attacks? -
New Dev Blog Report: November 2012
[email protected] replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
Good stuff. By redesigned controls and UI, I assume it also means doing simple stuff like climbing ladders, opening doors etc not being so awkward and frustrating anymore? -
Chernarus is still the best for me. I really like Namalsk, especially with survival being much more difficult but the map is too small and there are way too many weapons around. Tents are pointless and you're pretty much guaranteed to run into someone wherever you go. Surprisingly though, I've had a few friendly encounters there. Ran into a guy with a chopper and not only he didn't kill me but he offered me a lift. Never happened on Chernarus. If Namalsk was a lot bigger and had less weapon spawn points it would suit this game perfectly I think.
