  1. I've seen screenshots, and I've looked for information on the improvements the engine will bring. Arma 3 looks really pretty, but why should I be excited about the DayZ standalone using the same engine? Is Arma 3 going to solve issues with glitching into walls and breaking legs? Will I finally be able to maneuver through an apartment building with more grace than a 350lb shut-in? Will it solve glitchy zombie movements? Possibly the most important, will we still be using BattlEye to catch/prevent hackers? Shiny graphics and improved physics are great, but what DayZ is suffering from is technical issues, not dated graphics. I understand that going standalone means that Rocket will be able to make changes at the engine level, which is great, but what does the Arma 3 engine (Real Virtuality 4) offer over Arma 2 (Real Virtuality 3), and how can we expect DayZ to benefit? I'm not asking these questions because I think nobody's thought of them, I'm asking them because I don't see anybody asking them, and the answers are important. http://en.wikipedia....A_3#Development Describes a few new features of Real Virtuality 4. They mention PhysX a lot, and improved flight models/vehicle handling with actual phyisics. This is great, but it only answers the smallest of my questions. Edited with fancy yellow font to highlight the important question.
  2. After reading all the loot suggestions on the front page, I didn't see this: Looting items makes noise and gradually attracts zombies. The idea here is to make solo looting more hazardous, and to add a further element of playerskill to effective/safe looting. Definitely this too.
  3. protip: people who don't shoot you, then offer you blood and food are not bandits.
  4. You know you play too much DayZ when you read this thread and go "lol this thread is awesome".

Just got sniped at the NW airfield full of loot.

This is where you went wrong. Don't sneak. Oh I mean uh... make you feel better, hm. This: http://dancewithizzy.com/home/tag/cute-puppy?currentPage=3
  6. I beansed all over this suggestion. When the world goes to hell, gas is NOT going to be infinite and ubiquitous.

    Instead of a class system

Just make the tool belt extremely small, and make tools take more than one space in a backpack. There are currently twelve different tools, but a survivor can fit all of them on his belt and still have room for more. With a smaller tool belt, survivors would need to make decisions about which tools to carry. This achieves the same goal as a class system, which is to prevent every survivor from being a jack-of-all-trades, but without any of the drawbacks of a class system. As an added bonus, it also should be much simpler to implement and test.

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

Yes. We know the Arma 2 engine is bad, but what is there to make us think that the Arma 3 engine will not be bad in some of the same ways? I don't expect you personally to have the answers to these questions. I made this thread to point out that these questions are here and should be asked and answered.

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

Right, but having source access is granted by going standalone, and could happen with either the Arma 2 or Arma 3 engine.

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

Thank you for being one of roughly twenty posts to actually contribute to this thread.

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

Is this directed at me, or the person you quoted? If it were directed at me, and you could read, you would notice that I mentioned this in my OP. Let me put this in layman's terms: You don't get the new thing just because it's new. You get the new thing because it offers you something that's worth the extra development you have to do to move your stuff for the old thing over to the new thing. People buy used cars all the time, and with good reason.

    Read the post above yours.

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

I didn't ask "why be excited about standalone". I asked "why be excited about Arma 3 engine vs Arma 2." I know you can read, so do it!

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

The last time I checked, there are a whole lot of people on these forums who develop this cool mod that uses the Arma 2 engine, and have put a lot of time into preparing to develop a new game on the Arma 3 engine. I bet they know a thing or two about the engines they use, don't you?

Standalone: Why be excited about Arma 3 engine?

But they could go standalone on the Arma 2 engine, and touch that engine code. I made it clear that I'm asking why we should prefer Arma 2's engine over Arma 3's Read.

    DayZ Standalone Confirmed

Yes, because no hacker or idiot has ever played a game with a $60 price tag.
  17. TIL Facebook is worse than DayZ forums.
  18. Hey guys, the admin unbanned them when you guys told him to, so stop being assholes.

    Recommended Amount of Gear?

    ^My gear.

    Instead of a class system

The benefits are already there, but only for people who know each other outside of the game. The benefits for spontaneous cooperation with random strangers are really not there. Moreover, this is only half of the purpose of a class system. The other half is to make a character worth more alive than the sum of its equipment. This, however, is not something my suggestion really addresses.

    Instead of Bandit Skins.....

Derp, the OP answered my criticism already.

Bandit skin alternative: Zombification in 4 steps

OP, this sounds a lot like a punishment system for bandits. I don't like it.

    Instead of a class system

I can't say I have the answers to either of those, but it would definitely depend on the specifics. If a toolbelt fits 2 tools, and a tool takes 5 slots in a backpack, a solo survivor would have a really hard time. If a toolbelt is 4 slots, and a tool only takes 2 slots, then a solo survivor could just forego the usual backup-primary in his backpack for 5 tools, and basically have everything he could want. Also, does the definition of "tools" need to be reworked for the purpose of this suggestion, ie. should things like a map or compass take up as much room as a hatchet or tool kit? Really good points that I overlooked in my initial suggestion. In addition to pointing out a hole in my suggestion, I think it sheds light on another room for improvement in DayZ: the ease with which players, particularly those in groups, can totally reclaim everything they lose when they die, essentially reducing the death penalty to a WoW-style corpse run. Perhaps one useful suggestion for this would be to have some of your gear damaged or destroyed when you are shot, or when you die. Or maybe make it so that items carry hidden information about their previous owners, and use that information to prevent players from looting items they owned in a previous life.
