If good weapons were harder to get...
Flambo (DayZ) replied to Elo's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I suspect that it will take more than just this to create random cooperation in DayZ, but I think your suggestion sounds like a reasonable experiment to take towards moving the game in this direction. -

Taking a break from DayZ
Flambo (DayZ) replied to hooligan (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
First time on video game forums? Don't let it put you off, people only come here when they're cranky or bored (read: cranky). -
20 words or less: Super-Low Humanity Detection
Flambo (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yes. The point is not the bandit's inward feelings, but outward appearance. Only if they spot you. Reread OP. -
False. Dipshits who buy preorders and get excited about press releases are the reason the gaming industry is full of shit. More arguments, fewer temper tantrums, pretty please.

@OP et al: If you only do nice things for people because it's convenient or safe, you're not a "good guy". You're an opportunist; you're in it for profit. Genuine good guys aren't out for profit, and don't care if being nice means being shot.

So many Epi-pens. Does your character have allergies? -
False.

I've murdered 110 people, I'm still alive, and i'm coming for your beans...

Autumn of QQ A Haiku by Flambo This thread, all of it Delicious tears for O.P. His satisfaction -
Words cannot express the admiration I have for this sentence. Having the current hatchet as a sidearm would be a wet dream for many. I have mixed feelings about whether we should get what we want here, or be forced to suffer with it as a primary weapon. As far as having a half-damage variant, I doubt it would be very popular unless the halved damage is still enough to 1-shot a zombie. Is it?

Possible solution for the "kill players just for fun" thing - an idea
Flambo (DayZ) replied to Spidey (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You're not the only one who holds this opinion. While I would certainly enjoy 3-4x more zombies, I don't think it's a must. What is a must is that zombies become Public Enemy #1. At present, zombies are slightly less threatening than mall security. -
The last Bandit thread you will ever need
Flambo (DayZ) replied to NovaDose's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Am I required to have a better idea before posting constructive criticism? If I were going to put forth an idea for dealing with banditry, it would be something along the lines of "give players an immersive way to tell who's who", "make ammunition scarce enough that it won't be wasted on profitless kills" or "give players the ability to adopt non-threatening body language for their character, so that you can easily distinguish would-be murderers from the peaceful survivors, because only the murders feel like having their guns out all the time." Or something like that. -
This is to address a common trend in newbie help threads. Newbie: I just played this game for the first time. Help/what do I do/this game sucks/it's too hard. Veteran1: Read the wiki. Veteran2: Use an online map. Veteran3: Go back to CoD. Veteran4: Read a guide that explains zombie aggro. To the new players: Don't do any of these things. ANY of them. The point of DayZ is not to max-out your character, to have top-tier gear, to finish the story, or to otherwise "complete" the game as fast as possible. DayZ is NOT about endgame; it is not about the destination. It is about the journey. Approach the game with a "spirit of adventure". So don't look up a guide. Don't use a map, unless you find one in game. Don't worry about being lost. Experiment! Die a LOT... die constantly, and don't worry about it! Look back on your deaths with amusement, and when you see your next death approaching, make it epic. Take risks, even ones that won't pay off. Learn the ropes the hard way, and by the time you understand how this game works, you'll also understand what it's about. Edited: After some feedback, I've tried to clarify my message. DayZ and Arma 2 have complicated controls. Basic gameplay, like moving, looting and opening your backpack, is not intuitive. By all means, look up advice for these things. Just please, for your own sake, don't look up any advice on how to deal with zombies, where the major towns or loot areas are, or how to get started quickly & painlessly. This game is all about the pain and the learning, so don't hide from it!

Hotfix Build 1.7.2.4 Rolling Update
Flambo (DayZ) replied to rocket's topic in Mod Announcements & Info
I've seen this in previous versions with my 1911. AFAIK it's one bug: reload not switching out a partial mag for a full one. The behavior of not dropping the partial mag is correct: the game does not drop it because it is currently loaded in your gun. -
The last Bandit thread you will ever need
Flambo (DayZ) replied to NovaDose's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
@OP: How will I hunt the infamous bandits? Search servers meticulously for a matching player name? Once I find their server, and get a person in my crosshairs, how will I know if it's them without killing them and inspecting their corpse? Without other supporting features, this idea would not cause players to single out bandits, it would only add encouragement to take potshots at anybody in the hopes that they happen to be a bandit and drop an ear. But more than anything, it will give certain people even more drive to kill mindlessly, in hopes of getting their name on a shiny list. It would be, if you had any way to tell who's a bandit. Since DayZ lacks Fallout's "HURR DURR IM A BURRNDIT" nametags and obvious voice/mesh/texture/scenery markers, I can't see how this system could work. -
I feel you completely. I had a lot of moments of this, where I wound up searching things like "how do I pick up a backpack", "how do I equip a fire axe", "what is mousewheel menu". And after that, I still had to spend a ton of time sifting through Options -> Controls in game to find out that you press "K" for compass, "O" for watch, "Caps Lock" for voice chat, "/" for text chat. I am totally not suggesting that newbies try to figure out interface/control issues like this on their own. That's ridiculous. I only mean to be directing my advice at the exchange that goes something like: Man1: I just started and this game is hard! Man2: Go read a thing that tells you where all the best loot is and how to metagame your way around zombie aggro. My message: if you are like Man1, don't take Man2's advice. It'll rob you of experiencing much of what DayZ has to offer. On a side note, I'm happy to answer any interface/control/glitch related questions. I see what you mean, but I'm also glad that you get what I'm getting at with the first post.

Really surprised only one reply is about Comic Sans.

This doesn't happen. Rocket has stated that only spawning these weapons gets you banned. Picking up and using hacked items that were spawned by another player flags you for "special attention" in the DB, but does not earn you a ban. In general, I agree that there is a large amount of metagame in DayZ, and I agree that every player should eventually check out the wiki so they know exactly what's what. I am not against wikis. The only thing I'm advocating is that players hold off on reading any DayZ-specific guides until after they feel they've learned the basics: finding food and water, basic guns, navigating to a few towns, and most importantly, learning to embrace death, loss, failure and bullshit.
-
These are mostly related to Arma 2. I'm not discouraging people from reading up on the controls of Arma 2, I'm discouraging them from looking up a guide for DayZ. I disagree. Every player always spawns near a road or railroad. If wandering in the wilderness isn't doing it for you, try following the road or railroad. You don't need a wiki to tell you these things. I'm not making this post as someone who looked up guides and wishes he didn't. I'm making this post as a player who went without any maps or wikis until I had figured out where to find guns, found an in-game map, and had a crude idea of how to play. Playing the game in this way has been amazing, and I feel that I would've been cheating myself out of a tremendous amount of satisfaction had I used wikis and online maps as shortcuts. I understand that many players have zero patience for learning and failure these days, but without this patience you are missing much of what makes DayZ what it is.

For trading to be a significant part of DayZ, you don't need currency. You need a reason to trade. As it stands, most things are very easy to get, from food and water to basic guns. People won't trade rarer items for basic things like this, because by the time they can get the rare stuff, they have more of the common stuff than they know what to do with. If you do manage to find something rare enough that another person would care about it, great! You can trade... all you need then is some clever plan to keep your trade partner from shooting you in the face.

Why does everyone want me dead?
Flambo (DayZ) replied to ScottishOwl's topic in New Player Discussion
Mostly because they would be bored otherwise. I shit you not. There are people who get more fun from the risk of helping someone than the risk of killing everyone they meet, but you have to make an effort to find them. By make an effort, I mostly mean "get shot a lot". Dog eat dog. (not sure if joking...) -
The Death Star is now in range.

Who are you? Disconnected while playing together.
Flambo (DayZ) posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Met you in cherno and didn't shoot you, you mentioned you were low on blood from someone else who did. I took you to find a bloodbag, and then we teamed up. We were last heading north, each with AKs, when the server restarted without warning. Server US 520. We text chatted once, your username was Jess. If you read this, send me a PM! I don't want to lose a friend to a server reboot. :( -
Read 1 or 2 pages of the thread. People with a broken leg get the respawn button enabled, and people who spawn in debug, waterworld will be moved to the coast WITH their gear. I didn't notice any mention of being stuck in geometry. Does this even happen?
