  1. Is there even a minimum age requirement to run a server??? I don't want to get into an "Age=/=Maturity" discussion, but seriously... Running a server should require a certain level of responsibility. And adults generally trust other (qualified) adults with roles of responsibility. It feels like half these server admins are kids who think they don't need to follow the rules or simply aren't disciplined enough to handle losing without immediately abusing their power..
  2. Which is completely up to you. You're not being boxed in to any viewpoints or play-styles. But Rocket already has a humanity system in the game to play around with.
  3. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions. But I really want to focus not on trying to hinder any one play-style ala' "Make bandits spawn more zombies wherever they go." That's not really the point of this proposal. Getting back on focus. I simply want the region to be represent the humanity of the players in a non-intrusive way that still keeps players free to do whatever they want, but still leaves consequences (good or bad) that can be measured in an observable fashion.
  4. I assumed it did. We already know that the game keeps tabs on our location (every time we log-in it tells us the region we're in). The debug window shows how many zombies there are, as well as how many we've killed The debug window also knows when we've killed, and wounded others The game knows that we can give each other medical care. Even if the game can only spawn zombies based in logged-in players (we are actually "servers" to the zombies) I would guestimate that it can still querey the region we travel to, and spawn zombies based on it's new "humanity rank."\ Rocket's been working on a way to track player activity, including measures to document and assess Alt+F4ing. I'm just going on speculation, that's all.
  5. UPDATE: Gave it some more thought and fleshed out my idea a little more. Edited first post. Thanks for all the feedback!
  6. NOTE: It's not my intent to force a "Survivor=right Bandit=wrong" game mechinism. This is not what is being proposed. Players will always be able to do whatever they wish in the game. I was simply imagining a mechanic that would give objective and feasible consequences to players' actions. It still keeps all the power in the player's hand to do whatever they want.

DayZ DEVS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!!!

Agreed 100%. It's one thing to just know that harsh language and insults are experiences du jour, online and to go about your day like it's nothing. It's entirely different to see an entire community of people... of human beings... who are capable of great and awesome things... routinely and utterly fail to maintain the simplest, bare minimum of humanity and decency. THAT'S the thing that gets me sometimes. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lttcrjiCyD1qht847.gif

DayZ DEVS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!!!

I see. You're insinuating that because I find anonymous insults and homophobia unappealing, I'm somehow "new" to the internet??? Perhaps you're wrong? Perhaps I've comprehensively seen what the veil of anonymity of the internet has to offer and am very well aware? Maybe I've see what harm it can cause and what the results can be to people I know? You might have seen it all and just become complacent in the desire of the masses to cause misery to others. That doesn't mean I will, as well. That doesn't mean others should.

DayZ DEVS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!!!

Hey, I wasn't personally hurt by any of the replies, myself. Let the animals be animals. If the DayZ Staff are perfectly aware that the forums are a cesspool of the internet and are fine with it, so be it. I'd just like to know what their stance is on this bubbling hate-cauldron.

DayZ DEVS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS NOW!!!

I was the OP to the original linked Topic. I was asking a question directed to the community for serious discussion (with argument and debate welcome), completely aware that I would be receiving some degree of flaming for it. That was to be expected with the subject matter. What I ended up reading was a string of insulting, threatening, and completely inappropriate responses that look like it was torn from the dregs of 4Chan. What started as a community discussion and awareness post ended up being an unexpected litmus test to the abrasiveness of this community. And to be quite honest, the mods should see this as a striking and important cross-section of the content of thiese forums in general.
  11. In this situation it's YOUR MISTAKE that YOU MADE that resulted in you alt+F4'ing. You logged off in an area that will see player traffic. It's your own fault that you were put in a bad spot. As a rule I think back to each death as a lesson to learn. I suggest you stop trying to cheat death and ask yourself "What did I learn from this?" When you start over again, you're that much smarter for it. Avoiding death only makes you lose an important lesson. In this case, you would have learned "When I log off, I need to be in a concealed, low-traffic, or secluded area."

    White Flag? Ceasefire? (Stop KoS)

So basically, Rocket removed a working feature because it was getting in the way of character customization, which we pretty much don't have.
  13. I actually asked my Fiancee who's getting her masters in Social Work and Psychology a similar question. I asked her if "kill-on-sight" was a human result of scarce resources and self-preservation in an apocalyptic situation, or just people being jerks online. Her Response (and I quote): "There's a little self-preservation to it, but most of it is just being a stranger online. A huge chunk of the population isn't going to instantly turn into murderers. I mean, come on... stop being assholes and start helping each other!" So, there you have it folks... Straight from the professional. "Stop being assholes and start helping each other."

    White Flag? Ceasefire? (Stop KoS)

That is a good point. The social and psychological aspect of this game should still remain intact. But seriously: When a player being chased by a hoard of infected STOPS TO LINE UP A HEADSHOT and kills you with his gun... When a player camps near the shore simply to snipe new-spawned characters. When he go-to gameplay results in "got bored; PvP." Shit's broken.

    White Flag? Ceasefire? (Stop KoS)

I don't know either. Some people are just simple-minded absolutists who thinks only in extremes. "If this game isn't constantly shitting on you, it's care-bares" or some stupid shit like that. Why must it be either one end of the spectrum or the other? ANYWAYS.... I think your original idea of a "no damage" toggle does kind of feel "too gamey" and outside the feel of the game. Personally, I think the Bandit skins system was a good placeholder for the PvP situation. It shouldn't be in the final product, but it certainly wasn't breaking gameplay. Especially considering, Rocket removed it without a good replacement to the point where it is now mindless death-matching.

Day Z Player: Praise DayZ for it's difficulty curve and it's insistence on "smart gameplay" See another player, Mindlessly kill them as a knee-jerk reaction because we don't have a higher intelligence than a rabid animal. There seems to be a disconnect, here... :P
  17. Why? I mean, it wasn't clever. I guarantee you, every single person in that Church would have, at one point or another, thought about the exact same thing. In fact, that was probably literally the first thought everyone had when seeing everyone. The only reason it was funny was because it was predicted so easily. Why? Because too many players in this game are morons who think they're clever because they did the first thing that came to their mind when everyone else instead dismissed it, and tried to do something different for a change. "Hurr durr I'm so awesome. I'mma gunna throw dis nade an blow ere'un up! lol. I'm so cool." Yeah, that thought crossed all our minds, douche-bag. We just had the self-control not too. Sorry you didn't pass the "Capable-of-higher-thought test."
  18. I apologize in advance if anyone wants to print this out and file it in the cabinet labeled: "Sh!t we already know!" I've been thinking about gameplay, difficulty, and the human nature to follow the path of least resistance. I think some of the players who PvP on DayZ, came here because this game offers "softer targets" than games that offer 100% dedicated PvP. WHAT?! Explain Yourself For This Heresy, Now! Generally speaking, in other, dedicated PvP shooters, every single player is there for the same reason: Combat against other players. They practice, they get good, and they learn every trick in the book. Every player becomes very good at a very specific gameplay style. DayZ, being a sandbox game, has offered many elements apart from PvP. There's survival, stealth, team-building, zombie-hunting, scavenging, collecting, driving, player-interaction, and role-play. So, it's not outside the realm of possibility to say some players, who find dedicated PvP (and thus their opponents) too difficult a challenge, migrate to a sandbox game with PvP elements. That way, they are accessing a pool of players who aren't all PvP-centric. They can murder newly-spawned players, zombie-hunters, players simply scavenging, role-players, etc. You Just Butthurt You Are Died!!!1!!1 I R Hardcorez Manhunter! The Most Dangerous Prey!111! I'm sure you have such a sense of accomplishment. But before you want to gloat, remember: Going on about your kill-streak in DayZ, is like bragging about being the most attractive person in Walmart down the street from the Professional Modeling agency.
  19. I think PvP will be curbed a bit when the following things happen: More content is added to the game rather than "get bored; PvP" Players can group/friend/communicate/spawn in-game easier A "happy medium" is found for distinguishing between friendlies and bandits Bugs are squashed alt+f4 playstyle is fixed Hacking is more under control Players can customize

    Pending Update: Build 1.7.2.4

So, is Infected's range of vision considered "working as intended?"

    Thank you Rocket!

You mean the Hunger Games, right? Honest mistake. Woody Harrelson was brilliant in both roles.

Well I just uninstall this POS

True. but a "Good" sandbox game balances different playstyle content so that the majority of the playerbase isn't crowding the same corner of said sandbox. Right now, it's like we're all eating at the Chinese buffet and everyone is crowding the sweet and sour chicken station, because all the other food stations are not stocked or just dangerously undercooked. Great, now I'm hungry...

Well I just uninstall this POS

You're right. That does happen. But those seem to be an exception. I was referring to the noticeable majority of the player-base. In most cases, i'm wagering that this is the reason why most PvP happens.
