Edit: a lot of people have been wondering what server I play on. Our server is public and the IP address is 173.199.86.106:2302. The teamspeak is ts5.gameservers.com:9143 only rule in ts is to be over 18 and chill. Please come hang out with us. ________________________ So my viewers wanted me to play the role of a law man wherever I spawned. I happened to spawn in Berezino... Interesting RP followed. These are the highlights from about two days of streaming but most of it happened in about 3 hours this morning. Special thanks to all the randoms I met . . . I never tire of your amazing reactions. I play only on 1st person servers and the viewers get to control the character's backstory etc. www.twitch.tv/katabasis Episode #1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qB0_irMUWTY Episode #2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ6hMyevN5A Episode #3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CILDxOIkrQ Episode #4 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAXMgnWct7Q Episode #5 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLaHrUEv8Zc BONUS VID - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgdX80ju_XU (I needed to respawn fresh so that I could start on the "lawman" challenge)- 69 replies

Light RP, Community Growth, Private Server Discussion
Katabasis posted a topic in General Discussion
Update! Server is live at 173.199.86.106:2302 So first quick synopsis of what I'm intending to do over the course of the next year of alpha/beta. 1. Run a private, whitelisted, Light RP server for a large community (max server pop not just 40). 2. Have a community enforced set of rules centered on fair combat, rational actions based on character backstory or group/clan goals, and mature interactions. 3. Grow a large community whose purpose is long term interactions on a single server (think EVE online and guild wars etc on a smaller scale of course). So here is the main purpose of my thread. I want to gauge interest in this type of a community, ask for opinions on things like server rules/RP rules/payment options and fairness, and to organize and centralize my group's backstories/RP elements. So what is your interpretation of "Light RP"? Mine would be something like this: the player would need to make core decisions on a few factors such as character personality, their threshold for aggression/aberrant behavior, their short term and long term goals, who are their enemies (if any permanent ones), how they will react under extreme duress. An example would be perhaps my character is a bandit. Am I solo? Who are my targets? Why are they my targets? How do I react to threats, trade requests, or being outnumbered? I would need reasoning for all my actions. I am not a psychotic murderer so I wouldn't KOS. I would hit any unarmed target that would possibly have food/medical supplies. I would trade with other bandits and I would avoid military/police groups. I would in general avoid most armed targets since they require way too much risk to rob. I wouldn't kill my victims because they are a source of supplies down the road. If they know I'm just out for murder they will know not to trust me and they would learn to KOS me. I would wear specific clothing to distinguish myself apart from the military (no combat helmet, no tssko vest, no camo, only civ clothes maybe). These things are all considered when creating a persona. They give every interaction a reason. They give every death a story, an experience that is completely unique to that character. The next time you respawn maybe you are a trader. Or maybe you join the military police clan living out of Cherno and protect your past marks. We currently have a teamspeak and many people already playing at various times. I am a streamer with almost 4k follows and 350k views. We are a mature, over 18 (most of us are in our 30s), group of gamers who prioritize friendship over "leet" gameplay. I have streamed for over 2 years playing various games in a permadeath playstyle such as borderlands 2, dishonored, d3, skyrim, fallout nv, etc. and I stream nightly at around 9pm PST at twitch.tv/Katabasis and my YouTube is at www.youtube.com/katabasisgamer. Please do not think it am trying to self promote. I'm am not sponsored, I make no money from this, and I have no intentions of trying to seek a job from this. My goal is to make great friends and share amazing stories. So what are your thoughts on a community like this? What kind of rules do you think we should have? My friends and viewers will most likely be using this thread to discuss character builds and RP stuff. I will be allowing viewers to control my personal character RP build and how I interact with others. This game is an excellent sandbox so let's get to making and breaking some castles. TLDR - if you need one of these you are most likely not the intended audience. Sorry. Edit - so the server has been up for almost a month. We have had some crazy fun. Seems that when experimental patches go up there is a lull time while people either play the experimental servers or they take a break till the patch comes up. After playing around with different types of RP and after conversations we have all had on Facebook and teamspeak I think the general consensus is that people prefer an EVE style experience instead of a solo or duo RP interaction. This provides more endgame group play but does initially limit the storytelling. I will give an example (fictional) of what I mean by EVE style light RP (it is similar to old school Darkfall). The 15 members of the Chernarus Liberation Front have laid claim to Elektro as their home base. They chose this due to proximity to spawns, double firehouse spawns, and ease of defense due to how open the approach to elektro is. They tend to fight for the benefit of the average citizen although they do intend to expand regardless of the neighboring settlements' opinions. A coalition of mayors and sheriffs from the surrounding towns get together and discuss a plan to limit the scope of the CLF's expansion. They inform the CLF leader of the details. He disagrees and takes offense at their audacity to limit their operation. War is declared. The coalition is undermanned and outgunned due to their towns lack of weapon spawns. They do however have tons of food and use their resources to hire a mercenary force that operates out of Riffy. Combined they wage war until the CLF relents and agrees to a compromise with the coalition. The NE firehouse will be a neutral zone where anyone from the surrounding towns can go to loot weapons and supplies. Within this engagement there is a story, political intrigue, misinformation, propaganda, alliances, and possibly betrayal. There is also however a ton of combat, which us what dayz is about. This is what I dream of when I think "light RP server". At the moment we just don't have enough regulars to have that many split up groups. Time will determine if we can find enough but it takes people willing to work towards creating this environment purposefully. Thoughts on how we can achieve this?- 117 replies

1st Person Only - Light RP Server (Mature Community)
Katabasis posted a topic in Server Advertisement
Howdy all!! I run a server that focuses on growing a community for the purposes of continual, persistent light roleplaying. This does NOT mean no KOS nor does it mean roleplaying is required. My main goal is to bring together people who know that dayz is more than just TDM, combat logging, server hopping, shit talking, kiddie-ville zombie sim. There are essentially two different ways many of us are playing light rp. The first is to have a continual character who persists after death. This character would have goals, eccentricities, rationales for actions, likes, dislikes, etc. They then interact with the people they come upon based off this background. The other way many are playing on the server is to allow each character to have their own individual life and upon death they create a new person and a new background. Either way, some people group up with others for a common goal and others go between solo and group play based on current ideologies and goals. For example, I am the Sheriff of Berezino. Even when I die, the character that spawns is the current sheriff. I have several deputies and we all patrol Berezino, kill bandits and murders, aid new spawns and friendlies, and clear zombies to make the city livable. Other groups may be opposed to this and may come and have run-ins with us based on their own goals (territory, loot, ego, etc). I really want the server to be like a mini-EVE online where allegiances shift, wars are waged and ended, political intrigue runes wild, you know what I mean. Sky is the limit. The only rules so far for the server is that you respect others even after ingame conflict (this is dayz .. we all die ... if you cant handle a death dont play the game - some people will be friendly one day and be an ax murderer the next) and also no racism/discrimination. In teamspeak, you must be 18+, show respect to your fellow gamers, and not be racist or discriminatory. Teamspeak is open to all. Server IP: 173.199.86.106:2302 Teamspeak IP: ts5.gameservers.com:9143 (include the colon 9143 or it will not work) Twitch: www.twitch.tv/katabasis Current Youtube vids of the Sheriff can be found here and will give you an idea of what I personally mean when I say "light" RP...your definition may be different and you are welcome to RP however you want on the server - http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/163031-stop-im-the-sheriff-of-berezino-we-need-to-talk-vids/ This link is to our community discussion about all things relevant to RP, Dayz, and the server - http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/161991-light-rp-community-growth-private-server-discussion/ Hope to see you on!! I am about to go live and stream on it now. P.S - I make no money off twitch or youtube. . . the server is completely funded by donations. IF you want to donate towards the server find the donate now link on my twitch page and thanks a ton . . . DayZ servers are very expensive :( -

We have a new ts now but have stopped playing dayz for a while. There just isn't enough sand in the sand box for RP currently. It's getting there. I'm not at my computer to find the ts address but if you go to www.twitch.tv/Katabasis and then click the link for my Facebook and you can see the post that has the new address. -
ive seen teleport hacks ... not in a long time tho

Just had a sour death. This game can make you feel really bad sometimes!
Katabasis replied to Hagon94's topic in General Discussion
currently the way the cursor works is based on a large number of factors including gun, health, tiredness, encumbrance (clothing), and probably other factors. I am pretty sure this will never change. It may get more intuitive and a bit less clunky but in general this is kinda working as intended. -
We are getting rid of them asap. Mods, if this is the wrong place please delete or move and please accept my apologies. My goal is not to cause issues but to inform others. Gameservers support allowed my server to be down for over 30 hours. After informing them that my server was malfunctioning (This was not during the maintenance) they then asked me if I wanted to move my server. They didnt fix it they just asked if I wanted it moved. I said to do whatever it takes to make my server functioning. I made many updates requesting information all within the same tickets and did not receive any support until after the maintenance was finished. This company has not responded within 8 hours to any one of my tickets about lag, crashes, etc. Yes, they are the cheapest dayz server host that I could find but that in no way warrants them ignoring our complaints repeatedly. I am taking our communities 100 bucks and going somewhere else. Buyer beware.
-
He is incorrect. About 10 of us couldn't log onto server. We didn't all get ddos. Also server pop was 0/40 for 30+ hours
-
wut .... and how exactly am i supposed to do that. Also i am pretty sure I didnt get ddos'ed ... the server was glitched out, not laggy or fully crashed. You could log into it but you would just sit there in limbo w/out a body on debug plain. I dont think it was a ddos as much as it was an issue w/ the servers not being updated to communicate w/ the central hive. read the announcements fore more info.

So myself and a few others have been wondering about the validity of having a server currently with the way Dayz is functioning. Currently it seems like if the server isn't full or close to it, most of our community is playing on other servers (which is fine). I am debating whether we need a server at all at this point in time if we are functioning on other servers for the vast majority of our playtime. I personally have only played on our server but I have been running into few players since the server population is so low. The other thing we have be thinking about is the fact that there isnt much for a roleplay group to function around yet. Beyond forced interactions of story, backgrounds, etc., there doesnt seem to be any endgame systems in place such as camps, a truly indepth medic system, etc. So there is no need for much player or group interaction. No requirement to have many resources etc. Anyone can find a gun/food/meds in a short amount of time and then proceed to do whatever they want. At some point these things will change. The game will get more permanent systems in place to aid in engame content (and player made content), the health system will be more complex than "eat beans till I am full health/use a splint" and resources will actually have a meaning (then owning a city will be lucrative and also something to fight over). Without these systems in place I am beginning to doubt if a light RP community can really thrive. The community will continue to grow but maybe we chose another server as a home. I have done absolutely zero in regards to server managmeent (because there has been no need as well as no ability, I have no options I can chose as server admin to really enact any change to the game, nor should I). So it isnt like we are gaining any real benefit from having our own controllable server. Currently we have the server until March 11th. I have not gotten any donations towards paying off the server past March 11th so it isnt like if we decide to not have a server I have to refund people (if I had to I certainly would). Thoughts? What are we gaining by having our own server that we wouldnt get from just declaring ARC as our primary home? In the future we would revisit the issue of course once things like private hives/tents/player fortifications are in. -

it may be one of the times where they put in the ability for items to be repaired but not the repair type items setting up the system then adding the items as it gets bug tested

Update: Server is currently set to a 7am start. This means its early morning and we get to watch the sun rise. I find that changing the time every couple weeks really makes the game a bit more enjoyable. The next time shift will possibly include a bit of dusk, maybe an hours worth of light darkness just to give everyone a feel for the dark. of course if people dont like it i will change it. -

server has been updated back yet again to daytime only ... patches will ALWAYS revert it to using current GMT ... as soon as i see there is a patch I try and update ..sorry it takes so long sometimes. EDIT: server may not be getting updated correctly .. putting in a support ticket .. will update this post EDIT2: so the server seems to be at 7am (morning daylight) but in the server settings it still shows as "use current GMT". If you see that the server is ever in nighttime please add 213hybrid on steam and let me know and i will change it asap -
A tool to simplify reporting dodgy servers

as a server admin im paranoid my server will be falsely reported. What is your criteria? Simply the posted rules? -

If i could figure out how to make nighttime work I wouldnt mind making it a bit more varied in daytime.... maybe start the server at 7pm and then 1 hour or so every server restart would be dusk. That may be a kinda sweet spot. depends on how dark it gets ... testing it requires multiple server restarts tho so I may do it early in the am. -

That would be sweet! If you decide to just message me and I can give you details. I fixed it .. sorry I was at work. Also glad to see you enjoying the server! I have a good feeling about the communities future once we start getting a lot of people around. Groups will form and stories will be had ... great times! I have this vision in my head that is a conglomeration of eve online, darkfall, d&d, cs, and ultima online and I really think dayz might be the best playground to attempt this type of synergy... I just hope people have patience and stick it out for the long haul. Current game mechanics limit what we can currently do. hahah glad to finally hear from you. Ive seen your name on several times yet I dont think we have met ingame. Feel free to join up in teamspeak and hang out. I have found that 3rd person camera after playing 1st person so long feels VERY ODD! I think teamspeak is a good place to meet people but I would love it if more people would meet ingame and come up w/ long term group goals. Would be epic. I have one right now that I am not at liberty to talk about yet lol. Love it! Currently, I (brink) am on a Chechnyan recon mission . . . trust me when I say you do not want to run into us wearing anything that could be interpreted as Chernarus Military gear....If we meet you may learn more. -

It is now early morning .. SO SORRY! I was at work (i live on the west coast) and couldnt update till now. If 8am is a bad time for the server to be at let me know. I find switching up the time every few weeks to be kinda interesting. To those of you worried about low server pop, I think it has just been because of the patch announcement. Currently there are over 11 and I literally just turned it back to daylight. Thanks for bearing with me. Also feel free to come into teamspeak for those of you who are over 18. -

as an admin, you cannot do any general messaging live while the server is going on. what you can do is put in a greeting message or messages. You can set a delay. What they did was set a reallllly long delay so it comes up to freak you out lol -

So much good advice I'm having a hard time understand and processing it all. I'll list my thoughts as I reread. First, teamspeak isn't mandatory nor is it even heavily suggested. It's there as a tool for those to use as they need. Second, we don't have forums or any rules besides not being racist. Odin was suggesting forums as a tool for people to share stories. He likes taking photos of events and writing out short stories behind them, hence the suggestion he gives about forum use. I am all for a clan system, similar to EVE, where intrigue, politics, and resource management collide, and I do truly want this to develop organically. There are already vary degrees of RP going on. I think I need to stress something to you. We are of like minds. The game has been the preferred mode of communicating with new people since before we even had a server. In no way are we attempting to remove KOS or combat as well. My goal is a self sufficient community of many groups, both large and small, as well as individual rpers all playing under one roof. This gives an enormous amount of sand for this sandbox game and allows us to have a persistent dayz experience, which many would argue is key for fun endgame content. My only confusion is how do we progress from our current point to that glorious gaming experience that looms on the horizon? As server admin I'm in a bit of a tough spot. There is a narrow line to walk between micromanaging and not providing proper support. I feel very strongly that a vast amount of dayz players would absolutely love being a part of our community but if I advertise too hard I come off as a dick. I've currently decided to let the events on the server speak for themselves and so far this is working spectacularly. I'd guess we get a regular or two a day. Lately the server is dead since most people have stopped till the new patch drops. I'm trying to be patient, the issue I have is that I'm very concerned that if the server growth stalls out, people will bail. I know this wouldn't be a big deal I'm just a bit paranoid. I really warn to make this work. Thanks for the advice. I really need it. -

God I cannot wait. I'm just worried we started the community too soon and we will run out of steam and funds before it hits the sweet spot. Worst case scenario we descend on a hardcore server for a few months while we save up money for round 2. I'm just paranoid about running out of money. I can't front the 100 bucks a month on my own. We have enough currently until March 11 though so I'm prob just paranoid for no reason. -

I agree with you for the most part. The only difficulty I see at currently doing this would be that it is very hard to grow a community without a centralized hub. At a certain point I think the scenario you present would be optimal and self sustaining but at the moment the server contains a majority of players who do not know its a light RP server. The centralized hub of a public teamspeak allows us to meet and greet potential new friends, welcome them in, and take criticism and advice. I agree that as admin i know my job is to facilitate and not create. That's why I'm so adamant about my belief that a server can self govern and I'm only there to take care of server maintenance. This is however in a perfect world where the server has already established its own culture, rules, and has a healthy population. Once it hits that point I'll take a more hands off approach but in the mean time, I'm going to do my best to bring interested, grounded, fun new friends to the community. -
