My initial starting strategy focused a lot food/medical supplies but I think I'm just going to try and find a weapon first.

Same issue always seems to get me after I've been alive for a little while. No flashing thirst or hunger or any other status effects, just only being able to sprint or go at walking pace. If it happens again I'll try Rauvir's and Remix's suggestions and report back.

You got a chopper for free and got to fly it around in Day Z. You had all that fun and excitement. Sounds like a pretty good day in the game to me. Joy is fleeting, do not get attached to material goods.
