The tactical significance of sniper rifles, accumulated rebuttals and why they're here to stay
slonlo replied to ZedsDeadBaby's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Now now... if he wants that let him have it. He can take his hatchet and run at the nearest survivor screaming obscenities if that's the game he wants. Meanwhile xFortune (or any other sniper) will be patiently waiting with rifle in hand for him to stop to eat those beans... because it sounds like that's the game HE wants. And I'll be toting my AK, 1911, and ducking in bushes to avoid them both. For THIS is what Rocket has decreed. It is YOUR game. Play it how you wish. -

I wasn't naming a title from a video game. I was clarifying what the gentleman meant when he said "engineer." He didn't need to correct the other gentleman, however, as he was just being ... ungentlemanly. Your correction, however was unnecessary because you knew exactly what he meant. I only sought to point out that the term "engineer" is not specifically limited to someone who majored in mechanical/civil/electrical/et cetera engineering. A "repair guy" is an engineer by one definition. A "bandage guy" is a... you get the idea. Space. Exclamation point. -

Psh, what are you talking about, this is completely survivable... ( to be fair, this is very close range so the bullet didn't have time to stabilize fully, so it tumbled more quickly than a stabilized bullet would). -

My brain was just overwhelmed with snarky retorts to this, but all I really have to say is (or the most I feel I should say): WTF is that supposed to mean, and what the hell does it have to do with Day Z? -

He was using 'engineer' in it's military definition. engineer (ˌɛndʒɪˈnɪə) — n 3. a mechanic; person who repairs or services machines 6. Informal name: sapper a member of the armed forces, esp the army, trained in engineering and construction work So a "repair guy" in the group is in fact the engineer in the group. Just like the "bandage guy" is the medic. The "helicopter flying guy" is the pilot, et cetera -
My buddy and I found some just going along the north edge. Started by the inlet in the north east.

I do agree that someone carrying an M107 should be slowed down. With 3 mags and a scope that's nearly 50lbs. That's a lot to hump through the wilderness along with all the other gear. Once again, not something that can be fixed in a mod as far as I know. I'd also like to add I haven't seen one .50BMG rifle since I started playing this game. Even on someone's back. I don't think they are as common as some make them out to be. -

Actually... have you ever fired an M82? They don't kick much at all (like you might think). Tuck it in your shoulder and it's a pussy cat. That big ass clam shell brake will clear your sinuses (and knock the wind out of anyone not directly behind you). They are definitely too common, but that's a matter of duping. Plus I would have killed for a .50 calibre rifle the other night to stop a van. Plus they are effective against helicopters, if/when they come back. I haven't used one in the game yet though, perhaps they are too accurate. The .50 BMG cartridge is NOT meant for accuracy, and you aren't gonna be finding match grade ammo with 750 gr A-max or solid lathe turned bullets in Chernarus. Make it like 2MOA and there will be fewer people taking shots at 600 with that thing. Again, I don;t know if that's possible through the mod though. But if you had a 11" ring around your point of aim where it would hit randomly at 500m it'd be a much more realistic situation. -

The only difference I'd like to see is the 'zero' system. I know that is an Arma thing, and has nothing to do with DayZ, but I would prefer actual MRAD adjustments at least for the rifles with mil-dot reticles. The subtensions are correct to the point that you can accurately range targets, so being able to make a call off the splash and make an adjustment would be great!! Then folks would either have to make a wild ass guess at elevation or make up their own dope cards. Then people with "no training" would have a much harder time with the "sniper" rifles. Again, that is asking WAY too much, I know. Just something I've thought about since getting into Arma. -

That's just it though, it's not. I VERY rarely encounter folks with precision rifles when I'm not expecting it. Actually, now that I've been playing a while, I am NEVER surprised by a sniper. If someone takes a shot at me, I was in a spot where I knew it might happen. Just like the kid I shot this weekend running across an open field with his buddy outside Starry (that then stopped RIGHT at the treeline). He shoulda known better. Then he Alt+F4'd as he was spurting blood (but that's another argument). But not long afterward I was engaged by 3 guys (2 in ghillie's) with at least one semi-auto precision rifle and I dove behind a rock, then hauled ass through some bushes. It's not hard guys. Just be smart. That's what makes this game so much fun. You gotta think!! -
Zombies should NOT respawn at crash sites if player is still at the scene.

It "breaks the immersion" as so many other like to point out. It's not about the game being too hard. If you want unrealistic things that make the game harder then why fix the zeds glitching through walls? Why fix stairs breaking your legs? That makes the game easier, go play <insert game with pink logo here>. I can, with certainty, say that it's not Rocket's intention for zombies to appear from nowhere in front of you. Put 20 Zombies at the helo... 30, 100, I don't care. But they shouldn't reappear right next to you after you kill them (same goes for any other location in the game). -
I just wish there was a way to swap to the gun in your pack without dropping one (assuming your pack is near full). But I know it can't be TOO easy. I wouldn't mind dropping it either if I could be certain it wouldn't be eaten by the ground.

Great story! I know it's hard when you're in the dark and the heat of the moment, but I would have called to him, "Survivor with flashlight. Don't move! Lay down. Look at the wall. Count to 100. If you move you will die." Then take off. I did that with one guy one day. I had just left a barn, only had a double barreled shotgun, and another guy came in the barn after I left and crossed the street. I asked if he could hear me, made him salute, told him not to move, and do NOT follow me, and if he does I'll shoot. I felt good about that, I could have easily shot him. I wish folks would had given me that same chance a time or two. But I've said before, if that's the kind of game you want, play it that way, others may or may not, but the game is what YOU make it. You can only control yourself. I hope we cross paths someday... and mutually distrust each other and cautiously back away. Those are my FAVORITE interactions in this game.

I was worried about that respawn button thing. Nothing like glitching on a rock in the middle of nowhere then crawling 3 or 4 miles for morphine. Good call on the fix Rocket! It'd suck to be stuck in the game with a broken leg.

First, the phrase "civilian sniper rifle" just makes me cringe (there is no such thing). Hitting a man sized target at medium range is not that hard with any decent precision rifle, assuming you've had any exposure to long range shooting at all. Especially when you have opportunity for a follow up shot. Anything inside of 600 yards is cake. If you don't believe me, just try it. It's everything ELSE that is hard (field craft, data collection, ranging, making first round hits). I've said it before, but there is no need to eliminate the scoped rifles, or even reduce the spawn rate at all. Just fix the glitches, then let it get sorted out naturally. Eliminate the server hopping for loot and duping and mag glitches. That will automatically limit the use of the scoped rifles, because it IS indeed difficult to find them. But not when you can just go to your tent and make more.

There is already a way to identify a bandit. He's the guy shooting at you.

I don't really like it. I like the idea that I have to constantly communicate with my friends to avoid friendly fire. For example, I neglected to tell my buddy the other day that I was going in another door, and he shot me, while calling out to me there was a survivor. After a bit of confusion we sorted it out, he bandaged me and hit me with a blood bag. The green arrow thing would eliminate that interaction. Plus I, personally, will call to someone before shooting them (if they aren't an immediate threat), partially for that reason when I'm in a group. This will just promote the shoot on sight mentality, I think,

Controversial Topic: BANDITRY IS DEAD.
slonlo replied to omgwtfbbq (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
All that needs to happen is to fix the exploits. Natural law will sort everything else out, just as Rocket intends. It's literally as simple as that. As long as guns being duplicated with tents and stockpiled through a half-hour hopping session, and dropping server as soon as you see another player is the norm, then the current state of the community will remain. I think most people would enjoy robbing someone like this too. Wouldn't it be better to take someone's bag and EVERYTHING and leave them with NOTHING in the wilderness? I think so. Of course they could respawn, but maybe that could be altered too to make your own life more valuable than just the loot your carrying. I've always thought its the job of the player to make the game how he wants it to be. If you don't like killing on sight and want to see robbing like this, then do it. No one is stopping you (except the current exploits discouraging it). Once things are polished it will be a MUCH better experience. -
The other day I was playing with a few friends. We spent a couple hours finding another noob friend and getting him some basic loot. We made our way to the southern grocery store in Berezino when across the screen comes, "Here comes the candyman. M4's for everyone!" We were all a little confused, until my buddy checked his inventory. We all had suppressed M4's with 5 mags each. We had to drop our weapons and pick them back up to get the M4. We were all a little stunned, to say the least. Trying to decide what to do. It's great to have, but everyone else has one too. So we just carried on as usual... for a minute or two. About 3 minutes later the server restarted. Our noob friend was back on the coast with no loot, and my other friend and I were in the same location we were on when we logged on that afternoon, without the loot we had found over the past few hours, but it was now dark. Obviously it was the server admin having a little fun with his clients.

What MineZ is Doing Right, and What DayZ Could Learn From It.
slonlo replied to Time Glitch's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Ok so I had to skip to the end after page 3 for the 50th time when the kid said reducing military spawns is the answer, so feel free to bitch me out if this has been mentioned (I mean it has, but maybe not in specific response to him). Reducing the military spawns will ONLY HURT the "friendly" players and those who play legitimately. THOSE GUNS ARE YOUR PROTECTION!! It has been said that they are only over-abundant due to hopping/duping. If you reduce the spawn count, unscrupulous players will spawn them themselves. Then that "asshole bandit" in a bush on a hill that spawned while you were looting that hangar will be the ONLY guy with the AS50. While your buddy on the treeline watching your back has a Mak PM and a glowstick. Fixing the exploits is all that is necessary, which is on the agenda and has been covered in about 47 threads a day for the past 3 months. -
DayZ should become a stand alone game using a different engine.
slonlo replied to Harris (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I might get flamed for this, but just hear me out... This will be the SINGLE BEST move for the DayZ brand, and all dissenting opinions shall be null and void. I think it should use the Angry Birds engine. Think about it. EVERYONE has heard about Angry Birds. They even have Angry Birds BandAids. Have you ever seen an ArmA II BandAid? HELL NO!! You know how hard it is to break the glass at the hospital? Imagine being able to hurl one of those splitting blue birds at the window instead... INSTANT ACCESS to all the eggs you can handle. Boxes, trees, etc are all destructible in Angry Birds, not so in ArmA II. Yeah, slingshots are silent, but those birds yell and shit when you fling em, that'll agro Pigs like crazy (not to mention the Pigs are already green, so pretty much zombies already). Most of all, Angry Birds has sold WAY more copies than ArmA has. It's a no brainer. -
There are already zombie-safe zones with no loot. It's called the woods.

A buddy and I played for about 4 hours last night on one server. No issues at all. The first couple of servers were a little problematic. The one we settled on was a 94445 with 1.7.2 and everything was perfect (stability wise). He did have a zombie spawn virtually on top of him then break his leg once while he was prone and we had a couple extreme range aggros (but we WERE running though, so not too bad). FPS did seem better, but I still had some zombies come through walls at me (an interior wall next to stairs if that makes a difference.

Just finished watching the Q&A vid. Got me all excited about DayZ and now this drops... I need to leave work NOW!!
