I think the Real Virtuality engine used in the DayZ stand alone will massively improve this mod in many ways. One of the most obvious examples is the lighting, especially at night. Observe how much more rich the lighting is and how it adds to the game, this also includes the muzzle flashes, now nighttime will present the problem of giving away your position by firing not only by sound but also by muzzle flash You also get to see a quick demonstration of the inventory system which looks to be massively improved. Drag and drop capability, gear that can be stored in your clothes, in your back pack and is all separate with their own menu from the top bar will make managing your inventory much more intuitive. I think the attachments will be an interesting addition as well, allowing us to customize our weapons like never before

You shouldn't as it has been integrated into ArmA2 since day1. You may not be allowed to join some servers though because when you run a custom skin EVERYONE on the server has to download your skin, and server admins can set a limit on how big the custom skins are, and some servers set that limit on 0kb. You won't be banned you'll just have to remove your custom skin and then you will be able to join

You don't need more Ram, 8 GB would be fine, with 16 you will probably never get over 50% useage in games, if youre using photoshop or something along those lines you will probably also be safe at 8gb unless you are doing HUGE photos or running several LARGE ones at a time. also here is an updated pic for DayZ http://i.imgur.com/CGiWB.jpg

Dont bother with a new video card if you're having issues running DayZ unless you are SURE it is your GPU bottlenecking This is from ArmA2 + ACE + ACRE, I would have used DayZ but I had to log off quickly last night and it wasn't in the safest of places so I am waiting for my server pop to go down :) I run this(and DayZ) at a steady 40 frames, and it is not my GPU that bottlenecks it is my CPU, try turning your options UP to take some of load off your CPU and see if it increases your performance..or better yet get a GPU/CPU load logger and see which one runs at 100% most of the time. I usually exit the game for a few hours go grab something to eat or go for a run. Come back when I am not so pissed about w/e mistake it was that got me killed and then get back into gaming :)

Indeed! excellent post :) If you are not comfortable picking your own parts you can sign up for Tom's forums and some very smart people will help you out, just tell them what games you would like to play, what resolution you want to play at, and how much you have to spend and they will offer some suggestions. If you have never put a PC together from parts don't worry it is actually very simple, like level 2 legos really, just get an anti static strap and follow instructions! If you have some friends ask them if they have ever done anything with computers chances are you know someone who has messed around inside their PC enough to know what they are doing and most geeks will do it for free just to have the chance to mess with new hardware!

Indeed that is a good way to save money that I didn't mention. My experience with Intel is that they change their sockets often enough that by the time the CPU starts lagging the fastest CPUs are on a new socket type making only updating the CPU not possible. As a matter of preference I prefer a whole new system to upgrades. This also helps as I can then sell my old gaming PC for 1/4 or so the initial cost. Although I do remove the larger Hard drives and now that I run SSDs in it I will be removing those as well before I sell it. However, saving money for 6 years/upgrading every few years is really a matter of personal preference. The one thing I think everyone will agree on though, PC gaming can be expensive, but vs the dumbed down games you find on consoles, nothing will ever replace the PC

Don't do it. That will NOT RUN ArmA3 which is what the stand alone DayZ mod will be using for an engine. Even if it will play ArmA2 DayZ(which I highly doubt) you will have at most a few months before DayZ ArmA2 is no longer a supported mod as it will be moving to ArmA3 as soon as it comes out. I know PC gaming is expensive, but cutting corners will not save you money because will end up having to buy a new system every time a new game comes out. Your best bet would be save up money and buy a decent gaming PC, the PC I use now cost me $900, but it will still play games coming out today and it is 6 years old. So that works out to being only $150 a year(I save $200 a year to build a new PC every 6 years as that is how long a really nice gaming PC build will be able to run most new games for) So my advice is don't skimp, you will regret it, as you will have a PC that will not run any new games, and will only barely run any recent ones.

the marks are channel specific. if you are in direct chat only those in the immediate vicinity of you will have the mark on their map. side channel, everyone can see it, same with global. vehicle, only those in your vehicle can see it etc. marks are server specific and can be deleted by anyone who has it on their map, they are also wiped clean by server restarts.

waypoint ability can be turned on or turned off as a server option.

one thing to remember though about the weight is that #1 it will be in ArmA 3, and thus will almost certainly be in DZ stand alone #2. We are talking about survivors who have already survived what appears to be weeks to months of combat with the undead, so it is likely for them to be in better shape than the average person, either because their pre-infection fitness was better, and that is why they survived, or because after weeks/months of combat they have gotten into better shape.

sometimes new games require hardware upgrades, just the nature of PC gaming

download an addon called ShackTac movement. It helps with indoor movement a LOT! not all servers allow it but it does help a ton when you can run it. The only major issue I have seen with it is the bench in the southern baracks is far more difficult to get over when you are running STM but if you dont frequent that building but do use other buildings often you will love it!

ixtillion: I carry an AS50 in my pack and an m4cco sd in my hands until i am in my sniping spot. this means i have almost no room in my pack after you consider that: 1. i need to carry enough food/water to stay in a spot for a few hours w/o leaving. 2. I need to carry two types of primary ammo and enough to be effective w/o switching them(you can't switch under fire unless you want to die) 3. my hides usually mean that my own ability to spot people around me is obscured significantly. 4. if i do find anything large of use I must return to a camp in order to drop off my gun first if you are constantly getting killed by snipers you are doing something wrong. I watch helo crashes, especially ones with nice gear that can be spotted from a distance (ammo cans for examples). If you approach a helo with out camping out and looking for snipers you are doing it wrong. I watch gas stations that i would use to gas up vehicles. if you drive straight into a gas station with out dismounting and checking out the area first, youre doing it wrong. I rarely camp the most obvious one of the NWAF..why? too obvious, people who go to the AF because too often there the people are doing it right. the biggest mistake people make when they are shot by a sniper is they stand still too long, a sniper shot in arma unlike in most FPS is not instant you have to correct for movement, distance, even wind(which right now in dayz isn't a huge deal but at distances of 3-400 can still make a difference) the more variables you can remove the better, so any sniper will wait for a stationary target. the only exception this would be a target moving either straight to or away from you, but this is where the zig zag pattern comes in. one thing people who often complain about sniper rifles forget is that, like i said before, snipers have to get food and water too, this requires us to move out of our blinds and down into towns and watering holes. Add this that most snipers have two primary weapons and our ability to store large amounts of food/water is non-existent making these trips more frequent. When we make these trips we are then vulnerable to other snipers and players. like other people have said it's not like snipers are some magic class who has omfgwtf powers, we have to play the game too, it just seems like theyre omfgwtf powers because you are playing the game with out patience or forethought.

Just an FYI on tents. I have no idea what tents were raided and I have actually been unable to play for almost a week, however I do that a little over a week ago there was a serious issues with tents on our server that was fixed when the tents issue was fixed where a camp that originally had 2 tents ended up randomly spawning 2-4 new tents every server restart. If the new tents were taken down four tents "packs" would show up instead of one. The guy who I maintained this camp with and I tried to keep the tents down but it was impossible and eventually we gave up resulting in a tent city with about 20-30 tents. This would also explain why it was poorly hidden since the tents spawned randomly in about a 100m radius of our original two tents. If this is the one you raided it was maintained by a TGer and a Public player, because we only cared about our original 2 tents, and I am not an admin nor is the public player and since I dont even know if this was my camp site or not I can assure you I didnt fire on you or restart the server.

the servers you play on must not have very good admins if youre having hackers that often

if you go far enough north or west the land is devoid of trees roads rocks etc and this will continue into infinity with the game randomly generating new terrain. this is "off the map" if you zoom out far enough on your map you will also notice two shades of blue in the ocean, the shade farther out is "off map" though these are no longer an issue

If you have a map you need to find your current location. the easiest way is when you first log in you get a notification in the bottom right saying what city you are near. Knowing this look for any nearby landmarks and compare them to the city you are near. Hills, Buildings, even shrubs can serve as helpful tips to clue you in to your exact location. If you have a GPS then bring it up by hitting right ctrl+m it will show you a minimap with you in the center. when in map view it gives your current grid ref. The first 3 numbers are the grid that runs on the top and bottom of the map, the last 3 are the ones on the left and right.
