Medical supplies are rare, so what to do
Flying Mathias replied to dierampe's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
You can (effectively) live up north forever with a hatchet, matches, and a hunting knife. Does get boring, though. -
Mousing over a road sign should show the text in English.
Flying Mathias replied to Flying Mathias's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Ha, one of my friends took a vacation to Russia and he can read Cyrillic. He's not much for video games, though, so my friends and I just drag him into skype calls to read out the signs for us. -
Not to mention, Bohemia may not pick up the game for a standalone if you could kill kids. Companies don't like to associate themselves with controversy like that,

Sorry for being nitpicky, but the denononym for Pakistan, Afghanistan, etc, is the country's name plus I. So someone from Pakistan would be Pakistani. The more you know! :D Thanks for the link, it'll be really useful when I'm playing. And I know that I really should get to learning Cyrillic, but this feature would still be great for newbies, and people like me who are just lazy. -

:( I wish my friends weren't console elitists. This game would be so much fun with friends, I'm sure. -
If he used a picture of a murderer from a story five years ago, many people wouldn't recognize him. It had to be someone from a recent story.

IF this was an actual game...
Flying Mathias replied to rocket's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Nothing that affects gameplay. Skins or some out-of-game items would be nice though. (Art, for example) -
But you see, if you're going to poop, you're obviously not starving. The only logical solution to feed your feces to a friend to prevent his starvation! Also, we should be able to poop in ponds to render the water unusable.

I want to have a rare replacement for the boat. A lazor shark. Who agrees?
-
Alright, this doesn't make any sense. If you're going to drink, you'd be in red on your thirst meter. But if you're dehydrated. you don't have anything to piss. So, the solution here, is to share your piss with a thirsty friend so that he doesn't die of dehydration. See? Logic!

Third person vs First person view

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. And OP, I still don't see why you can't just play on Veteran servers. -
Discourage Player Killing Suggestion
Flying Mathias replied to Stalbos's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
I think discouraging PvP is a bad idea. I think encouraging teamwork is the way to go, but your post didn't get it right. All of your solutions are gamey, and unrealistic. For example, make it so some areas are only accessible by 2 or more people. Ie, one player boosting the other up onto a ledge, someone lifting up a garage-style door so their friend can crawl under it... -
Can Zeds hunt by scent? If so, I think that this may be a good idea to make it a bit easier to stealth around Chernarus during the late game. So, this would be a new item in the game: Odourless Soap. ( A different, more concise name would be nice, but I can't think of one) Odourless soap would be common loot to find in hunting stands, and rare loot to find in military bases, civilian homes, etc. Upon finding odourless soap, you could rub it on yourself to mask your scent. This would reduce the zed's ability to find you, and allow you to sneak more easily. And, when dogs are implemented, it will make it much easier to avoid them. On the other side, "scent bombs" would be nice for some tactical approaches. You would be able to find deer scent (with the same loot chance as the odourless soap), which would become a new type of "grenade". You can then throw the deer scent to attract zeds to the location where it lands, or perhaps you could even throw it on an enemy player to cause a horde to chase him or her out of the city. The odourless soap and deer scent would wear off of the character after a certain amount of time, or it could be removed in other ways. For example, getting in water. Deer scent and odourless soap would also remove each other, (So if deer scent was thrown on you, you could remove it with odourless soap, or vice versa) Thoughts?

I mean't lore-wise. I know they can't do it in game, but this would add it in. Thanks for the support though.

Consider that the average lifespan is only 50 minutes. Now, do you see the problem with this idea?
-
It was so fast. She and I were sneaking around a zed infested town. She was friendly. She even gave me a gun. But I was greedy. I led her into a house, and I shot her in the head. I just killed a survivor in cold blood. R.I.P. Woman, I'm sorry that for killing you. I just couldn't help it.

You see what happens, Larry?

Larry is a dick. He punched me to the ground and almost got me eaten by zombies. Luckily, my friend came and saved me. -
Then just play regular ArmA?

Why Proper Realism Can Never Be Achieved In Day Z
Flying Mathias posted a topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've been lurking around the forums for a few months now, and I've seen arguments from both sides. The arguments against PvP usually involve some silly, gamey mechanic that breaks the realism, while the arguments for PvP usually involve the poster's deranged and unrealistic thoughts on how people would react in a real apocalypse. The thing is, the Survivors are right from a realism perspective, the Bandits are right from a gameplay perspective. You see, in real life, people don't kill people because they have fear. They may fear the law, they may fear karma, or a god. But they don't fear a silly bandit skin or a respawn penalty. But Day Z can't accomplish this, because there's nothing to fear in a video game. No god will smite you for killing a man in fiction. The law won't punish you for homicide in a game. And there's no way to fix this without breaking immersion; except one. The players themselves. A group of bandit hunters can be formed, or people can just stop killing each other except with it's absolutely necessary. Of course, that can't happen. People will continue to be dicks, looking to create their fun at the expense of others. And that's not a bad thing, it's your right to have fun in this game, even if it means ruining it for others. It's just unfortunate, that, even with the greatest technology, a game like Day Z can never be completely realistic or immersive, because people are dicks when they're behind a screen and that they know nothing bad will happen to them in return. "An outbreak, like this does, things to men. The violence. The death. Seeing loved ones die, change. It makes people snap, just like that. People just like you and me. Just when humanity should be coming together, they turn on each other instead. " - Chuck Greene, Dead Rising 2, Off the Record. -
I KNOW you're an exploiter if you disagree
Flying Mathias replied to TheMachine's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
The odds of it going out at just the right time are so small it just won't be an issue relatively speaking. And it'll be a shortish timer Exactly. If your internet is that bad then you're probably dying due to latency issues a lot anyway. For 99.5% of people it isn't an problem' date=' thus the game shouldn't be handicapped for the tiny .5% who have [b']some issues. But anyway, I bet that guy who posted above is an alt + F4 pirate. Just alt + F4 out of this thread, buddy. :dodgy: I'm assuming that you're talking to me? The only times I ever leave a server without dying is if; A- The server is at night or B- Something in real life needs my attention. -

Flying Mathias replied to Flying Mathias's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
But once again, this is a gamey solution (even if the idea of respawns are already quite gamey) and ruins a bit of the immersion. And besides, 5 minutes is a bit too small. It just gives you time to go make a sandwich. However, I must congratulate you on making this fair for everyone, the bad survivors and the bad bandits will both be punished, while the good survivors and bandits won't be. -

My internet is pretty terrible. I get disconnected a lot from servers just over in Chicago, and I live in Indiana, if I even manage to join a game. And I can tell you, that this will result in a lot of deaths. I know that this will solve the other problem, but which would you rather have, the innocent being punished and complaining on the forums, or the guilty just continuing to enjoy the game in their own way. Try playing with less-than average internet for a week and see how this would impact your experience. -
Morbid Stories - Tell Your Notable Death Tales Here!
Flying Mathias replied to Murphboy7's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I've only had three deaths that I can remember. I'm pretty new to Day Z. Death One- I had just made a survivor friend, and then I glitched on a a ladder in Cherno and died. Death Two- I spawned at night. I ran for a while, and I found a power station. I went inside, a found an Enfield with a few shots, binoculars, and some flares. I climbed onto the roof of the nearby warehouse, and started throwing out flares (stupid idea, I know) because I was low on blood and wanted to let any survivors know that I was here. After that, I climbed up a tower in the station and waited, watching with my binoculars. I spotted a survivor, and he told me that he had a blood bag that he would be willing to give me in exchange for some food. I began to descend the ladder, and....the ladder glitched and I died. Death Three, my most recent: I spawned in a building after having logged of for a while, and a man with a moustache ran in and killed my with an axe just seconds after I had spawned. -

Here's my suggestion: More complexity. Expand medicine. Make it so that the real life doctors, nurses, and paramedics will be the doctors, nurses, and paramedics in game. They'll know the proper steps and medicines needed to treat a wound or a broken leg. Expand hunting and tracking. Make it so that the real life hunters are and in game hunters. Add in animal tracks, scent, expand hunting. They'll be the ones in your group that know where the boar are or know which way a player in heading. Expand repairing. Make it so that the real life engineering, sappers, and mechanics know the proper steps and tools needed to repair that truck or build a wall for you. And more. People who are good at leadership and rationing will be the ones handling that for your team. People who are good at critical thinking will be the ones deciding whether or not to head into Electro for your team. Meteorologists, Cooks, Soldiers, Freerunners, they could all become parts of your team, using their skills to help you. What I'm saying is, if Rocket's a miracle programmer that can somehow do this, it would be amazing. It'll add in more realism without making the game feel gamey, it'll expand teamwork, forcing us to group up with kindred souls to use their abilities for banditry or survivalism.
