Goal: Have a system in game that allows for almost instant recognition of people you encountered before and know, by in-game visual indicators. Current limitation: - Recruit level servers will show the name of everyone once you can get your aim on it, even at insane distance and when hiding. - Veteran level servers show no names whatsoever, even people you've played 2 hours with the day before. - Skins are generic, it's nearly impossible to recognize people. Even with the skin system coming in, they will remain generic. - Direct chat isn't stable (patch coming in), has limited range and reveals people's position. It's useful for voice recognition of people you know, but not visual one. Proposal: - Force names off on all server types. - Have a new interaction when close to someone: "remember him" via interface menu. - Once in the "remember him" list, putting your aim on that player will show his name even at a distance, to simulate the fact that you already encountered him at close range and can recognize his face and the like. - Have this handled 100% client side of course. Comments welcomed.

WTF is happening to the server community.
Mutonizer replied to Koot (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Yep...that's gonna be the meat you talked about previously I suppose and it's gonna be a whole lot harder than adding temperature and drink/food or alter spawns. But in order for people who want to survive, to look beyond surviving, and therefore group up because it's more beneficial, it's needed at some point. However, don't burn down under the load. Do your stuff, in the order you want, how you want it, even if 90% of the people here end up leaving and hating you, what do you care? It's not like you owe us anything anyway. As you said previously, this isn't a game, it's an experiment. -

Do most people just turn up Gamma during night?
Mutonizer replied to Jamrock990's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Sorry what? competitive?? That implies competition, which implies someone can win. NOBODY EVER can win in Dayz. There is NO "I win" mark. You will all die eventually, because there is nothing else out there. The "experience" is the very core concept of DayZ. I believe Rocket implied as much many times. The goal of Dayz is emotion and experience, there is nothing else of any relevance. Obviously anyone calling you out for exploiting while you're using NVGs is a moron, if he knows you had NVGs that is. Otherwise there is literally no difference in using gamma to see bright as day while the mod is meant to have very dark nights, and using other methods such as external tools (maps on the net, teamspeak, etc) or just trying to exploit bugs and pure hacking. The "intent" is the same and that's all that matters in the end: to bypass the game intended mechanics to gain an advantage over others. Finally, HDR is a graphic setting that is intended as being activated for the full potential of the game engine. Even with HDR maxed up, you will NOT see that much at night, especially when there's a cloud cover. If you play without HDR, you are simply playing in conditions are do not allow proper moonlight reflection, which can be compared to someone playing with crappy textures, very low resolution, etc. Consider having ALL settings to normal/high to have an idea of what the game engine should be and is intended to be. If you are below that, you're screwed. For Gamma, you are meant to put it to 1.0 (same as brightness), and simply adjust your monitor using specific gamma calibration tools found very easily on the net. Of course you can play games however you want, but have the decency, at least for yourself, to admit you're cheating, to win a competition that doesn't even exist... :) -
'Save Old Camping Tent' action not being removed
Mutonizer replied to mad rabbit (DayZ)'s topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
As an added note to this report, which I can confirm as well: Once you have this, some item interactions seem limited. For example, I can usually use fireplace, pick up flares and chemlight. However, as soon as I have this interaction issue with "save tent" appearing non stop, I am unable to interact with these other elements. A relog will usually fix it, if you are far from a tent. Seems likely since the tents I placed where during that time period (new dayz patch, lots of server resets, and new beta patch). I have yet to find another tent and for some reason I cannot pack the tents I placed during that time, so I cannot test further yet. -

It's like other games of this type such as zomboid, dwarf fortress, etc. The concept is simple, you cannot win, ever and losing is fun. I spend insane amount of effort ensuring each of my character will leave the longest, total immersion and I would never "suicide" my character, no matter what (unless stuck on a rock or something). I've played for hours with 500ish blood, trying my best to live through, passing out all the frikkin time. I've also lost all my gear multiple times, weapons included, mainly due to bugs, and yet, still pushed through to the bitter end. But like some here, soon as my character DOES die, for a reason or another, I feel refreshed and then it's starting all over again :)

Simulate periods, menopause and all the other shit women go through, don't make them looking like some silly photoshop model and I swear nobody's gonna play a girl character. Joke aside, while it'd be a nice feature in concept, I think it'd bring a lot of shit people (or this mod) might not want to deal with. I mean...I really wouldn't want to be a women in a post apocalypse world with no law to restrict man's most basic instincts and I'm not sure you want that in a game, no matter how "realistic" that game wants to be. If you're a woman playing dayz, then I say you're much better sucking it up and playing as a male character and if you don't believe me...check your history books since..err..the beginning of time. Without the cushion of modern society, with laws and relative peace, I'm sorry girls, but during wars or when society breaks down, you always ended up being nothing but meat on legs.

Banned from Eu8 for russian language
Mutonizer replied to OldFox (DayZ)'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Odd. I always thought that having tons of different languages on a mod such as dayz was great. I mean, I don't understand russian, or greek, or many other languages, but that just add realism/immersion when you meet some guy and don't understand shit he's saying, or he you. Of course global/side chat sucks to begin with so...there's that. -
Reduced, not removed. From what I tested, they actually spawn, but on the ground. Since buildings have a slight floor elevation, the fireplace is below/in them. In some buildings with very small flooring and/or on a bit of a hill, the fireplace will pop out a wee bit. As a bug report: - Place a fire outside a building and light it. You regen normal fire regen. - Go in the building and stay stationary. The building regen will take over on next building regen tick (around 30 seconds?), ignoring fire regen. - Staying in the building while moving and remaining within fire range (that is outside still), you'll get fire regen.

Then it's most likely a lock. Tata :)

- With 3.410.047km walked, we walked 85 times around the earth but barely a bit more than 5km per individual on average. - For every ten survivors, bit more 9 died. This is a 90% mortality ratio, almost similar to some cases of the Ebola virus or the Marburg virus which makes the "Agent Smith" quote truer than ever: "A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure" - With 104.484 murders, we have an homicide rate of 16% (not counting the death of outlaws I think). This is more than 300 times the homicide rate in the US and yet only slightly more than Lithuania's ratio of death during the WW2 where 14% of their entire population died. - Counting all bandits, we have a 10% criminality rate. For some sort of comparison, let's say all these bandits were jailed, that would be 3 times the ratio of the US which is 3.7% of it's adult population being incarcerated, the highest in the world and of course very few of them are murderers. (around 50% for violent crime in state prisons). - With close to 9 million zombie killed, we already cleared more than 10% of France's population, close to 3% of the US population, then entire population of Austria, more than twice the entire population of Croatia, or close to 3 times the population of Lithuania!! All in all, so far, we pretty much should have totally cleared out a small country of zombies. - That said, it's only 0.6% of the population of China, which is a country you do NOT want to be in should the zombie apocalypse come!!

Infected Bite Causing Virus - Leading to you Searching for Vaccine
Mutonizer replied to I_Guts_I's topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
Survivors are immune to the virus from what I understood. Any infection system related to zombies is therefore a no-go unless something changes in the mod's background. They could cause other infections however of course, and food/water might do the same unless boiled/cooked. -
You don't iron out bugs during alpha, you test mechanics and see how the core settings are handling things. Only real show stoppers are cleared out, like Rocket's doing lately. Once you're in beta, then you freeze new core features and spend a shitload of time clearing up bugs, polishing and whatnot. Alphas are MEANT to be buggy as shit, crashing everywhere, wiping/corrupting characters, destroying servers and databases, etc. If it's not happening, you're not doing a proper alpha run.

Well, performance wise it shouldn't be a big deal. As for people "hacking it", I thought about it and realized it wasn't that big a deal with people moving server to server and whatnot. If someone would somehow be crazy enough to list 90k names in there, others could still simply use it as a way to recognize friends and people they've met before, from a distance and without making noise via voicechat. The "damage" it could do is very small compared to the "benefit", in my book. The idea here is not to flag people as bandits or friendlies or categorize players in any way, but rather simply show that you've met them before and therefore should be able to recognize from a distance, which is currently lacking I believe. I always play on veteran level servers so maybe that suggestion could only affect these types, if people on recruit level must keep their visual nametags for some reason.

Why we need MANY more zombies... and in the wilderness too
Mutonizer replied to LondonHyena's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Actually, from what I've seen so far, most people don't have issues with bandits per se, they have issues with people killing for nothing but their own fun (or ruin others). - Being held up or shot (not killed), for a reason that is logical to the context in the mod, is great. That brings immersion, social tension and overall, I believe people love it. - Being killed for absolutely no logical reason within the context of the mod, is aggravating because it totally breaks any sense of what the mod is trying to do, that experiment rocket talks about, the immersion. You can spot these very easily: they spawn, rush anywhere, kill whoever, and usually die after a couple kills in some stupid fashion, then respawn, and redo it all over again. They don't give a damn if their character lives or die, it's like BF3...with zombies and a bigger map. And that's the main issue, not bandits, not pvp but who/what breaks immersion and who/what doesn't. To me, people who wants PvP free servers are just like people killing everyone on sight for fun, they just don't get the concept behind the mod. People in between (bandits and survivors alike), are people who understand that and care about their characters (roleplay it if you want) because the mod plays around it. Hopefully, the more hardcore the mod gets (temperature, etc), the more people who are just here for the mod concept, will stay, while the others will get tired. There's an easy test: Would you rather be held up and give up all your gear, leaving you with nothing whatsoever but still alive, or have your character die. Personally, I choose to live... As a note, I always considered carebears to be players who just don't out of their way to screw up other players, or find their only fun in games through griefing others. I never saw it as a negative term really, on the contrary. And since I consider myself a carebear and yet love PvP environment, I never saw the two as opposites. -
One crossbow hit to the head and you killed off that lone zombie you aggroed by mistake. That's one inventory slot, for a totally silent kill, no other aggro, nobody knows you where here. OR One bullet to the head/torso and you now have to kill 10-20 zombies. That's 2, maybe 3 inventory slots... Once you get the hang of it, crossbow are..pretty insane. You need to spend some time training however, and learn when and where you can shoot in order to get that bolt back. Bolts are decently common however, so it's not that big a deal if you lose a couple here and there. Been using crossbow only for 2 weeks now (with a M1191 as backup in case shit hit the fan or bandit is about), I'm hooked. Heck, I don't even loot military weapons anymore because of it. I mean, silent kill, get close, grab bolt, hide body. No trace of you passing through whatsoever. Plus, for some reason, players seem more relaxed when they see someone roaming with a xbow in hand :) To me, they're fine the way they are now, it's just that other weapons are too easy to use :)

WIRE abuse at barracks by griefers

Hmm. Gonna be interesting when people start gathering 4 set of wires, then go to a spawn point, and enclose the area totally... -

How the hell can you willingly and publicly remain part of group where "dicks" and "nice guys" are treated equally. That's like group mentality at it's best: oh it's not me who beat up that fat kid, it's my friends. You know, they'are assholes, but they're my friends. Somethingawful is a forum community. Nobody gives a damn about it but people posting on it and in fact, from the little I've read, there are some good reads and interesting discussions. Goons/LLJK is an online gaming clan. People give a damn, because some of their fun is to fuck up other people's fun :) I know some people mix the two, I don't. But don't go about using LLJK/Goon tag and yell injustice when you get assimilated to them when something goes wrong (and something always goes wrong with them, something awful!! (see what I did there?). Anyway, this thread is off the rails completely!! :) -
Tent placement is a bit easier now, though still not obvious where you can and can't place it and when I could, I actually had the sound and animation, plus tent was placed but somehow I had a duplicate of the tent still in my inventory. Also, with the new interface, you can right click/activate a tent to place it multiple times, even during animation, which seems to bug out a bit and might be related to duplication.

Wrong example... My turn: If you are a member of a multinational corporation with 170,000 employees and as a corporation they do not condemn illegal actions (and related) from some of their employees, you are personally responsible if you don't do shit about it, yes. And for information, I did quit jobs because of how the company or other employees behaved (and were not condemned for it). It might be some old bushido bullshit to you, I don't mind. No you're not, you're condoning their practices, which can only be applied and enforced by them BECAUSE you keep buying there. If you're just visiting Walmart, that's cool however of course. Something awful is a tribe, a clan, a closed community. There are "in" people and "out" people, us and them. I never had any problems with SA because they are "enclosed" within their forums, which I don't use, therefore am not affected. If you don't go around with goons, wearing goon tag and what not, you're not a Goon, you're just a SA member and I don't think anyone has a problem with that really. We could go on for hours discussing this, so I'll just stop there I think, because this thread is turning into something it's not, sorry for that. However, since DayZ is meant to be an experiment, I'm sure we're not done discussing the relationships between those part of the tribes, and those not. -
