    Damage Models Stepping Backwards

Hmm, the human body can take quite a beating actually and "realistically", it takes a really perfect bullet to instantly kill someone. Personally I wouldn't mind non head wounds to just cause variations in blood loss depending on the weapon. For example, Fire Axe would cause extreme blood loss, small caliber would cause lower blood loss, torso wound would be major blood loss, leg/arm much less so, etc. Then you just need a "shock & pain" system that handles falling unconscious, and a longer duration wounding system (leg wounds make you run/walk slower, torso wounds make you more exhausted, arm wounds scrambles your aim, etc).
  2. Heh. Maybe the disease affected non-adults even more and completely wiped every single one of them instead of turning them into "zombies"? Who knows!
  3. Depends on how it's done really. If it's hunting and carving people up then yea, that's rough but that would mean a near 100% extinction of anything living in an area (plant, animals, insects, etc) so at this point, priorities need to change and humans are pretty good at adapting. However, it's pretty much no future at this point... However, if it's something like Soylent Green, where it's just maximizing waste disposal of people who died naturally, I don't really see the problem as long as it's done overtly.
  4. Maybe because there is usually nothing to loot, since people can log out instantly and corpse is lost? Maybe because there was no weapon worn whatsoever? Maybe because there was no risk to you whatsoever, since you can also immediately log out and hop servers? I also didn't say "no reason", I said "no purpose". If someone is having fun killing everyone in DayZ, it's a good enough reason to me. But it doesn't have a purpose :)
  5. Don't think so. Lots of the KoS we see today has no purpose whatsoever, especially now that most people simply instantly log out and there is no loot to be gained. All it would give is another interesting option for really desperate situations, bit like eating a rotten fruit when you're about to die.
  6. Totally off-topic but since you keep bumping, I figured maybe there was a typo and you meant "16-". If not, you might want to change the image to reflect the "positive attitude" you're looking for... Could be wrong but 4 guys giving the finger, 3 of them wearing silly masks, don't really scream "16+ mature with a positive attitude" :)
  7. "Should" be until server restart though currently it disappears soon as the original player logs out. If I remember correctly, Rocket mentioned during a stream that it was a bug linked to the queue system they've been working on (which doesn't work either) but should be easy to fix. There's also an issue with the Respawn system currently, as in sometimes it just doesn't work whatsoever when you press it, even multiple times and you NEED to disconnect/re-connect to start fresh. Had it happen twice out of 3 deaths so far, I just afked 5mins while connected to give whoever killed me time to loot, then relogged.
  8. Many movies (ie:Alive), books (ie:the road), and even games (ie:The last of us) features cannibalism. Some countries just ban stuff for various reasons, that seldom prevents the population to actually get such medias, just makes it harder. As long as it doesn't "promote" it, most evolved countries don't care much I think, bit like racism, rape, slavery, etc..
  9. It's game so of course "killing" is not literal killing, it's just an allegory for what it represents, which can range from personal gratification (challenge to "beat" someone, etc), to pleasure through other's pain/loss, etc. That's what it says: When you're bored in DayZ, YOU choose to kill others, probably for personal pleasure (since it's provoked by boredom apparently). That's your choice, others have other choices. I don't judge, as you said, it's a game, but don't think that it says nothing...it's your choice and that says something. And there is nothing in Dayz that pushes you to kill anyone or anything. I have 38 hours logged since a week after standalone release, I killed one person so far, by instinct because it was night and we just "appeared" in front of each others, guns raised and we both just reacted, I was faster/luckier. Also died 3 times, all from Mosin shots from nowhere. I don't log or server hop either, usually plays on the same server, day or night, doesn't matter to me. But that's just my choice, no better or worse than yours :)
  10. I may be wrong but I don't think the goal is to have some watered down easy survival game that pleased the "masses", even in a standalone version. Unless things changed drastically and money really intervened, Rocket's vision was anything but what you described. If you never played the mod, you might not yet know the feeling of slowly crawling for hours through an area at night with a broken leg and no morphine, surrounded by dozens of zombies, trying to reach an hospital spawn area...but to me that's ULTRA hardcore :) That said, can easily just offer server option for it as many said, easy fix and it's already in the arma2 engine...
  11. Think rocket first described it as an anti-game actually. There are no rules, no real goals, nothing to gain and you can ONLY lose, sooner or later. Any accomplishment one makes is 100% personal since there is no public tracking system and as I posted before, there is no reason to do anything defined by DayZ itself, only what you think is best for the time you spend in there. But that's not the point. The point is, there are tons of games handling killing people in much better ways with less clunky engines, better graphics, better gun control and the like. There is also nothing in DayZ that pushes toward one behavior or another. There's not score system, no leader boards and most people will never even know who shot them. That's the interesting bit in itself, that one spend the time and effort to actually get geared up and kill people in DayZ, for no game benefit whatsoever. And I don't judge, I find it just as interesting when people don't kill everyone on sight and talk. That's why I don't yell at some or others about what they do in DayZ, each of us make their own goal from nothing, and everything has equal value pretty much. Also, as a note, games have been used as educational purposes and studies in human psychology since...well..for a long time now. How one plays a game says a LOT about oneself.
  12. M4s, pistols and the like don't worry me too much, I'm usually careful enough and have enough experience with Arma engine to react or not be engaged at such range. Only thing that killed me so far since launch have been Mosins (with scopes I believe?). Some people are just aces with these and can shoot people running full speed hundreds meters away...can't do much about that really. Really a coward's weapon to me, even more so than most guns, but I totally respect their aiming skills, suck it up, give about 5 mins for them to loot me, then respawn :)
  13. Actually I believe that for a short time afterwards, it'll small groups becoming dominant due to sheer brutality/firepower/will to dominate and control and a silent majority obeying. You usually need force of law to have a stable society and you need power/strength to have a force of law that works. Then after some more time, society will slowly evolve once again with it's ups and downs as comfort and security returns.
  14. That's because one power still had a reliable organization and the means to provide help, while another had trouble to solve. An apocalypse setting like DayZ assumes a total and global breakdown in both civilian and military structures. Maslow's basic principle: you cannot help others, if you're yourself barely able to survive.
  15. ALT+mouse head movement is one of the key feature of the arma engine. Once you get used to it (it DOES take some time to get used to it), you have a perfect feeling of terrain at all time. Only thing missing are proper sounds really.
  16. Yea same, then I started walking as a fresh spawn, and figured, well, I might as well go unarmed civilian and just travel about, see how people react. I'm not actually a "medic", I just travel around the map, loot some stuff, share other stuff, be very friendly and talkative. Very relaxed play-style though I do check my surrounding a LOT and don't play dumb whatsoever. I just...don't do hostile actions and try to be very overt, see how it goes :) Probably gonna end up randomly shot by a nobody but it's interesting as long as it lasts.

Best settings to improve FPS for radeon 6850.

Edit your settings as indicated here: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/154330-possible-fps-enhancer/ Especially the config file changes. After tweaking a bit personally, gained about 35 FPS. Also make 100% sure that you disable ambient occlusion.

    Night Time View

Clouds disabled and very low HDR, then you can crank up gamma, works like day pretty much, but in grey shades. There is NOTHING to win however in Dayz so doing this is a personal choice: you choose not to play the game as it's designed. If you want immersion as the game intends however: Normal setting with clouds (even lowest, just not disabled) and use flashlights. It's....quite scary and really gets your blood pumping. :)
  19. DayZ will never work as such though, don't think it's even meant to. Engine just can't handle amounts necessary to create a threat, external communication systems (teamspeak, etc) negate anything the game tries to achieve in-game social wise and, of course, it's only a game, some people just don't care whatsoever. It's a very interesting gaming experiment though, that's why I spent money on it, but I don't expect it to ever achieve anything close to what some think (and hope) it should, nor will it ever be "finished" I think. That's exactly how I've been playing for the past week. Very interesting style :)

Night time In Dayz SA and your thoughts?

Love the night themselves, really can't see anything sometimes, just as it should be. That said, flashlight cone indeed needs to be wider and diffuse on the side, the more focused as you reach the middle of the aim. Not sure if it's possible in the engine though. But anyone can just remove clouds and see clear as day, so...
  21. I'm 100% in favor of 1st person servers and hive but you simple cannot use 1st person reliably until you have proper sounds. You NEED both sight and hearing to get a mental image of your surrounding, If the game cannot offer that, you need 3rd person :/
  22. Oh, I'm not saying people wouldn't start by killing each others, but that only goes so far. After a while, maybe a week, a month, a year, people would want to move on, rebuild, have lives, kids.... And then they'd prolly be a lot more killing, but you know, more "civilized" ones. That's the thing DayZ missing, long term value for players, what do you do once you got beans and water? :)
  23. Self respect? Also, since when someone doing something shitty justifies doing the same shitty thing? If you do it, it's not because the others did, it's because YOU choose to....
  24. After doing the usual sneaky armed hero thing, I've been trying a non combatant as well for the past week. No visible weapons (I keep a gun and axe in pack), staying visible, non military gear, I walk a lot, never crouch, etc... So far, still alive though I have not been to Cherno (you WILL get killed randomly there, no matter what). I met about 10 people so far (that I actually talked to) and I clearly stated my intents, stayed out of their way, left if needed. I have no doubt I'll die at some point, but it's been an interesting experience so far. Humanity still exists because people found out that banding together is actually better than killing each other (well, and that you can kill others easier, with people). While there are many wrongs, there's actually more benefit in keeping people alive (even if in servitude) than just killing them (unless you're trying to make a point). DayZ will need something that makes it more worthwhile to keep people alive at some point, though, being a game, a lot of people just don't care whatsoever. One very interesting thing in this "experiment" however is that unlike most games, everything you do IS actually a personal choice. Nothing in the game tells you to kill anyone or be friendly, unlike most games. There is no goal whatever but survive, and that's pretty easy to do overall. Unlike other games, you simply cannot put responsibility on the "game" itself, but only on you, as a person. It's even truer now that anyone can just immediately log out and the body is gone, so you cannot even loot. YOU choose to kill someone, or YOU choose to talk and spare him. That's to me very interesting to see how it goes, as a social and gaming experiment.

    Walking, jogging, sprinting.

Well, I personally I've been trying to walk most of the time on my latest character, only jogging here and there if in good shape. My food and water consumption is actually really good (almost life like for such activities) and character been in healthy state for days now, travelling around the map. I can also sprint and run for a good time before even having any real breathing issues, which is nice in a pinch. I'd be in favor of something making walking and jogging the most used human travel means, especially once vehicles and other features are introduced. Most trained people can fast walk/jog for a very long time even with a load on their back though and I think we can consider the character in DayZ as somewhat trained. The concept of energy is there so that's nice and you can "top off" with sodas, but there should be some toll after some time when the "sugar rush" is gone. Your energy/food level should also be more disconnected from the "full stomach" state. As it now, it feels very gamey, bit like a can of sardine is a powerup or something :) Sprinting should of course be there, but having tons of loot, weapon and whatnot should take a heavy toll on anyone sprinting for a long duration. Overall, it'd make the map feel bigger, travelling have MUCH more meaning and vehicles become really vital if you want mobility. Without vehicles and the like however, it wouldn't be very interesting I think.
