Rocket standing down from Dayz by end of year
Mutonizer replied to Hetstaine's topic in General Discussion
True, I do too and millions of people do as well. But he doesn't "come up with", he "goes and does them" in the middle of an industry that is growing decadent. Well, the indie wave is kicking the ant hill a bit but you get the idea. However, it seems that he's not a "completionist", which is a major problem because that puts him right back into the "you and me" category and as you said, we all came up with good ideas. -
Rocket standing down from Dayz by end of year
Mutonizer replied to Hetstaine's topic in General Discussion
Hmm, ok, that's seriously f***ed up... I didn't invest in DayZ, I invested in Hall's Dayz. I want a god damn grenade as a project lead, that's why I put money in it while I NEVER put money in that kind of early alpha/kickstarter stuff. That'll teach me I suppose. Really hope he'll keep his head in the game for the coming year and not start working on another project of his own while just sitting pretty at Bohemia being a figure-head. -
Been on such server since it's available. Don't really care about what others are doing nor if a server is full or empty.

There's 6.5 billions definitions of that word and DayZ's concept is to be an anti-game, an experiment. Since that's exactly what brought people here, I don't really see why backing down on that idea seems the thing to do now? That said, I don't really care in the end. I'm just here to see what Rocket and his team will do. I comment on forums and whatnot but the only thing I want is to let HIM do whatever he wants, not what I want or what you want. If I end up HATING the end result, fine, ah well. If it ends up as I think/hope it will, then great. I knew when I bought the alpha that it was a risk and I NEVER put money in alphas and whatnot but I wanted to finance it anyway, just to see what would happen because something this crazy, especially in today's video game industry, deserved it. I just hope it stays completely crazy.

So? Some people suicide just to get a better spawn, some because they're screen is a little blurry or black and white. I've played through every broken leg so far and this system has been in since early Mod days so seems pretty clear now that's where the project is going. Like bloody types right? Ohh, wait... Totally do not mind limping, tire size, shoe size. There will be many things unrealistic because they just cannot be done in a game, so why not make the ones that can be done, then see from there? :) Because that's totally artificial and forced, I've never strained my ankle through mountain treks or forest jogs and some "random" thing like that out of nowhere is definitely not fun. However, being a bit stupid and jumping from a high place or other risky actions that YOU initiate and can have severe consequences, I'm all for it.

Durnit! Send the R&D Team back for more idiot-proofing solutions! :) Joking aside, check the elevation, forestation, overall border lines, etc. For glaring similarities, check just a little east of the NW airfield for the "green lines" both vertical and horizontal. Then have a look in the overall same area on the real life map...

Realism within a given context, which can itself be totally fantasy. Some call it authenticity.

You're never in Russia, Russia's in you. That said, all items in DayZ are custom made FOR DayZ, not using previous ARMA models. Give it some time, there will be more item variation. Chernarus is also not Russia, it's an ex-Soviet bloc country like Bulgaria, Czechie, etc.

The goal here is not to reach "perfect realism", nobody's stupid enough to think that'll ever happen. The goal is to aim toward it as much as possible, so that when the "game" part comes in (because as you said, in the end, it's a game), the compromise will be more toward the initial goal and less toward making it "gamey". If during game design you plan for "let's try to get it as realistic and authentic as possible", then all your final game-play decisions will factor that. If you start by saying "this is just a game, let's forget realism", you end up with Health Boost appearing after killing a zombie, perma-sprint, etc. As for DayZ, I want that compromise to be so hardcore that yes, sometimes it's a chore. Playing at night in DayZ is a chore but it's also AWESOME. Having a broken leg is a chore, but the experience it offers is also awesome. There are tons of games out there already about "survival & zombies", none really catch my attention because they mean nothing, have no "soul" (whatever that means), no balls. Could play most of these games barely paying attention. DayZ IMMEDIATELY caught me, I'll always remember that first connection, during night time, completely unable to see anything apart from that flare light. I was like: "wow, this is crazy!" and spent the next two hours laughing nervously while trying to sneak between zombies and whatnot while staring at a near pitch black screen. And that's pretty much it overall. I don't really want DayZ to become just some random FPS game with zombies, I want it to be an experience that bitch-slaps me so hard every-time I make a mistake that I'll want to punch through the wall, that grips me so tight that I keep a light on when playing just so that I don't get a heart attack. Never gonna happen of course, but setting achievable goals is for crybabies and that's why I say: go nuts, I'll try to cope!

To really break (as in, bone snapped) both legs, it takes a little more effort than just falling down a small stair and a huge amount of really bad luck. Usually you'll sprain something or may have a small bone fracture. In game, you could limp for some time depending on treatment maybe? :) Otherwise, Morphine affects pain and unless really specific, a broken leg can still support some weight usually. You could potentially shoot up morphine to ignore such pain and therefore walk somewhat, but pain is quite often there to indicate that there is a problem and ignoring that can lead to much serious problems. In the early mod, I actually did crawl one night for bit more than two hours because of a broken leg before I could find morphine. Let me tell you, playing at night, crawling through tons of zombies with flashlight/chemlights is...frikkin scary :)

Go as completely crazy hardcore realism as possible, just because! Screw balance, screw ease of play, tons of other games do that. Go nuts! :)

The energy used to open that stuff...geeesh. Plus I think that only works on crappy cans, the ones I got here are...bit sturdier I believe. That said, there is at least one can opener per household so...wouldn't really be an issue :) Been carrying this (LINK) on me for the past 22 years, would love to see some equivalent in DayZ, solves sooooo many problems...

Hey, I'll describe the situation as it happened. I have no idea if any of this is related to the issue nor am I making ANY accusations. I just list the events as they happened in case it's helpful in identifying the issue. - Connected to a server yesterday (RedCoat) and played for about 20mins without any issue. - Noticed a man up on a hill near Elektro snipping about. - Server admin talked in chat about a man snipping from a hill, asking him to come down. No idea if that was the same guy but admins are quite vocal on that server it seems. - I sneaked up behind the said sniper and JUST as I was bringing down the axe, he logged out/disconnected (literally 1 second before) - Moved about 50', found a body, grabbed some stuff. - Same man (or at least same exact clothing and weapon) shot me almost point blank. - Re-spawned normally. - Within a minute, I got disconnected with message "Confirmation of Change: Authentication Time Out". - For about 10 minutes afterwards, I kept getting disconnected from the server barely within a minute of joining with the exact same message. - The server ranged from 38/40 to 40/40 during this time period. - Finally I was no longer getting disconnected (didn't reboot, reload the game or anything, just kept joining, see what would happen) and played without problems for about 2 hours. Any idea what the message meant? I could not find anything about it. From what I tested, it was not a connection issue on my side, I had a constant 20-25ms and no desync. The server was properly patched up and seemed overall quite stable. I also never had this message before. My battle-eye was initialized properly every-time and up to date.

Water and energy consumption rates figured out - and they are not as I expected
Mutonizer replied to (TMW) Merino's topic in General Discussion
Nice work Like dietetics and the like? The raw numbers are useful in Alpha stage to give proper feedback and reports I think. You can also ignore the raw numbers if you want and just take in the logic of it. I don't mind much about x or y factors but already you can see that identical water/energy consumption for any movement is a major issue. Can see as well that most of the food items are totally irrelevant based on just these findings. There "might" be more to it and it'll change as the Alpha continues, but already, on a personal level, I see that my "perception" of lower energy/water consumption because I walk/jog was completely false, which is interesting. Won't change how I play but now we can talk rationally about it. -
Rolling Update Rev. 0.30.114008

Nice one though was quite odd to me at first... Connected after patch on a patched server with my "since wipe" character. Could not interact with anything, as if ultra lagged and yet no desync and I could move. My ping on server when checking via player list was 0 constantly (which is odd, usually varies between 15 and 25ms). Relogged 4 or 5 times, quitting and verifying cache in between, changed servers, same problem. Relogged a last time: fresh spawn, old character gone. Since then, no problem and no rubber-banding so far, though I was never affected much to being with :)
