Need advice finding a gun, without taking to many risks
WildCatNL posted a topic in New Player Discussion
The obvious places to go looking for a gun are air fields and military bases, but these places also attract other players and I'm certain that they have the same itchy trigger fingers as the previous players I ran in who had a gun. Are there other locations, where you could find a weapon and have less chance of running in to other players? Currently I believe to be some were on the south eastern coast, if I keep on following the coast line to the west, I'm certain I'll run in to the bigger towns like Elektro were I keep hearing bad stories about as well as further down to the west is an Air Strip that also isn't very welcome for new players. So, any friendly advice to where I should be going to? -
am i going crazy or am I hearing things?
WildCatNL replied to Spartan5364's topic in New Player Discussion
Ok thx, good to hear its not my hearing playing tricks on me. -
So when ever I open (or close) a wooden door, a garden gate or some rusty looking metal door, I hear nothing, they all open silently. Yet very frequently when I'm scavenging through small towns I'm hearing noises in the distance that sound striking familiar to a gate fence or something metallic like thing open. Those distance sounds put me on edge every time I hear them. Does DayZ-SA have any door opening/closing sounds sets? The game is Alpha and all, but I'm hoping others are hearing the same thing for simply put its driving me nuts.

With all respect to the developer, but I'm sitting this one out. I consider my self lucky to have been unable to play for a few days and have been killing some idle time at work by reading the DayZ forums. With the knowledge in mind that zombies now seem to have keen sense of some kind :-) When I logged in I did some scouting on the far edges around a few buildings until I found my self a single zombie. I walked towards it, having his back faced towards me, with degrading light conditions. As I approached it to about 10~15 yard may be up to 20 yards (crouched) and paused a brief moment to check my surroundings for possible others zeds. When looked back at the zed I was tailing, it continued to move away from me, until it suddenly spun around and charged at me in its usual zigzagging way. I attempted to repeat this a few more times and got similar results. Even with all light fading to blackness, I didn't feel like I could get much closer. I don't mind that Zed's have better sense, but this feels a bit odd, it feels like i'm stepping on Zombie toes at 15 yards away. Zed's having better sense, I don't mind, only if there is some form of grace period. Some tell sign, that the zombie might be hearing or seeing something. Have it stop in its tracks and slowly turn towards the direction it sensed something. Instead of detect, snap turn and charge hauling zigzagging towards you. A tell sign would be our cue to act and disappear. Stop moving, go prone and disappear or simply get a weapon ready to defend your self with. Might do a bit more testing with throwing stuff to lure zeds away and see how close I can pass by them, but otherwise I'm sitting this one out and hope that in future patches Zeds are tuned down a bit. -
Before I even started playing DayZ, I've been watching a great deal of YouTube footage, watched survival guides and read the forums. But I can't recall anything about how useful some random empty junk could be. When I started playing I saw no value in Empty junk, didn't even bother picking it up. This all changed when I accidentally threw a empty bottle instead of a flare. The bottle shattered near or again'st a building wall, could not really see for it was very dark. To my surprise, zombies moved towards where the bottle landed and shattered and formed a small group. With this event in memory, I later tried it again and threw a empty soda can in to a fence and was able to lure zombies towards it to investigate the noise. With zombies preoccupied with a empty soda can, I was able to sneak by and salvage loot from a shed that just a moment ago, was occupied by a zombie. The lesson to be learned, is to see the value in empty junk you can throw and lure zombies with.

Putting all settings to low, could even harm your performance as a great deal of GPU calculations get shifted to your cpu. Do a few in game single mission benchmarks and toy around with video settings. See what improves your fps and what hurts it. ArmA II isn't a great graphical engine and the DayZ MOD also effects FPS both client side as well as server side. I've a similar rig, with the only exception I still own an old GTX 285, that should be more than capable to run ArmA II yet I'm in the exact same boat as you are. On average I'm able to pull 46fps during the single player benchmarks and I see my FPS drop towards 30 and lower when a great deal of object are drawn on the screen. With DayZ my fps is more around 30fps on average.

Ah oké, thanks that makes sense. Next time I'm connecting I'll kill my avatar and switch back to male again.

Every time I die and have to start over this choice pops up to pick a male/female avatar and a warning stating you can't change it. I'm male, so I've been going with male avatars, how ever I just experience some bad luck and died a few times shortly after spawning (controls went haywire) and I accidently picked a female and to my surprise my avatar is female. So ehmm, whats the deal with this Male/female warning pointing out that ones I make a choice I'm stuck with it?

Don't wish to disrespect your hardware, but the 9800 GTX+ was released in 2008. That makes it nearly 4 yours old. In my book, a graphical card has out lived it's use after 3 years. I use my computer on a daily basis and play a decent amount of games, I know I'm clocking a great many hours on it. See your GPU as a light bulb, at some point it will start to flicker. To me that flickering is a great tell signs its nearly burned up. The performance issues your seeing with an old game where the graphical card should have no issues with at all, I consider this to be the flickering of a light bulb. I fear your beating a dead horse. I'm using a GTX285, according to the Nvidia performance chart, its twice as strong and on average I'm getting about 40~50fps out of the game. With AA disabled and nearly all settings running on normal. I'll be replacing it the moment I see a great deal for a 680 card Oké my opinion set aside. Things worth testing, Nvidia profiles, make sure the game is in control and you are not forcing things on or off through the Nvidia game profile manager. (Just so you can get an accurate base line for testing) Do a in game benchmark and fool around with your video settings and see what increase/decrease your FPS. The Arma 2 CO beta patch also installs a batch file called "_runA2CO_beta.cmd" it force the game to use two CPU cores and a set amount of threads. Start the game through the batch file and see if performance improves. (this starts only ArmA II, no DayZ mod) Test video performance in ArmA II with out the DayZ mod. If you get similar performance problems, I'm pretty sure we can rule that the DayZ mod is causing problems.

90% of my server list is crossed out
WildCatNL replied to WildCatNL's topic in DayZ Mod Troubleshooting
Oh that stinks, what is there to gain to DDoS a game server? A well, at least I now know, I can stop trying to pin to problem to my system/software. Are these issues not posted somewhere for every one to read? Or did I simply miss it? Looked at the announcement and news forum section, but didn't spot anything that hints DDoS attacks... -
Have been playing for a few days now and so far all went smooth. Big Dayz server list is loaded of available servers every time I search for a server. about 15min ago I joined my regular server, but shortly after logging in, I get an orange chain icon, not knowing what it is I disconnect and reconnect to the server. Or at least I planned to reconnect, but the server didn't show up any more. I disable my filters and to my shock almost 90% of the huge DayZ server list is crossed out, marked with an big red X. I check with the few server that are still listed and nearly every one I click on, the ping updates to 2500 in red. Tried a few other games and did a few online ping tests and they all seem normal, smooth low ping. So ehmmm what gives?

I'm new to the DayZ mod, but I'm a big sucker for survival games, so once I heard about it and did a bit more searching about it on YouTube I was sold. I don't buy games often and didn't feel much for buying a game just for a mod in the making still in Alpha phase, but it was well worth the money. Anyway, I'm having a blast and love the tension and anxiety, or the simple thrill of having to be paranoid, scanning the horizon for both zombies but most of all other players. Compared to other players and there first time experience stories, I believe I've done pretty good so far. Sure, died several times, due to lack of understanding the game, but so far, I consider my self to be very lucky, the few players I've ran in to, where either friendly or didn't notice me. Have been shot at by other players and lived, never knew where the shot actually came from, nor did I wanted to go look, if I could I might have, but because I had a train of zombies chasing me down, my only option was RUN!. I eventually lost them after crossing a body of water, but also lost my gear. I lived, but no longer having a backpack really hurts. Now I like turn the thrill factor up a notch and shift from scavenging for survival and to putting some bullets in bandits. The hunted becomes the hunter ;) The thing is, I don't wish to go trigger happy and shoot on sight and kill every single player that crosses my path. Did some searching and people talk about hunting bandits like they can be identified, but I see little difference between one player and another. Might be equipped with different gear, but both look the exact same to me. Is there some game mechanic in place that marks them as bandit?
