    I have that same problem and it is not long loading times that does this, since i've tried MANY servers. I know I am registered by the server and for a short second i hear background noise and even see the group channel, but after i've been told my character has been created there is just... Loading and silence.

    I did, but then I went back and did it again and this time it worked, weirdly enough.

    "Error creating Direct3D 9 Graphical Engine" I have added the mod line and I run as combined ops. I followed your instructions to the letter and yes, this is the steam version.
